Netherlands going into lockdown

Breaking news. Netherlands to lock down from tomorrow.

Do you think other countries will follow? I doubt us as I think the Tories will do anything to avoid it

I dont think they can handle the negative press of trying to here over xmas. I wonder about new year though...

Thewiseoneincognito · 18/12/2021 19:13

This will be us soon, as will be the case for the rest of Europe.

thecatmother · 18/12/2021 19:14

I hope not us, as I am sure there's going to be riots if we do.
I think Germany might do and France.

IDontDrinkTea · 18/12/2021 19:14

I doubt they’d do it before Xmas. I reckon a lockdown will be announced on Boxing Day…

Sunflowersinthewind · 18/12/2021 19:15

Netherlands have a better vaccine rate than us I think. Do they have less bed capacity? Surely not!

Their booster roll-out has been terrible. Only about 9% have been 'boosted'.
TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2021 19:19

Overall vaccine rates are much less important than rates among over 60s.

Admittedly I haven't the first clue how they compare there.

Thewiseoneincognito · 18/12/2021 19:26

Interesting that they have had a nighttime lockdown since November which was helping to bring down their Delta numbers so Omicron is really quite something.

The next few days will be interesting here, I can see us following suit rather quickly, even with our booster program it’s likely not enough to keep lockdown at bay.

The Dutch "full lockdown" does not include domestic travel restrictions or a household mixing ban. In fact the Dutch have never had either of those things.

There is official advice (not law) to have no more than two visitors at home per day, increased to four per day from 24th-26 December and on New Years Eve.

No doubt this will go completely unnoticed in the UK amid the usual demands here for families, couples etc to be criminalised.

RosettaTheGardenFairy · 18/12/2021 20:38

I'm in NL, numbers have been decreasing recently, but they're really worried about Omicron. We were super late to start the boosters, so they're trying to get out ahead of it all now. Closing all shops, catering etc the week before Christmas is really tough.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2021 20:39

I hope not

But also how will they get out of it just to go back to rising numbers

Not sure if they’ll decrease in lockdown

HarrisMcCoo · 18/12/2021 20:43

Worrying times. Looks like something similar will need to happen in the UK soon as the NHS would struggle with capacity otherwise.

Doubt it will be as severe as our previous lockdowns though.

RedQueen81 · 18/12/2021 21:01

Heard from friends that they are packing and driving out of NL first thing tomorrow for a break elsewhere in Europe with fewer restrictions. It's really difficult for hard working families with young children in the winter, as school finishes, to not have any of the fun or holiday...
It didn't help that most are vaccinated.
