Hospital numbers

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 17/12/2021 19:08

I am not well informed on Covid stats but have had two friends tell me today that hospital numbers are 'the worst they've ever been'.

So I just did a quick search and assuming the graph I looked at is correct, we are nowhere near the Jan numbers. Is this correct?

I know the case numbers are high but that's not the same thing as serious illness. Saiid Javid said on Monday that 'at least 10 people were in hospital with Omicron'. Really? What is going on?

Sajid Javid!

Hospital admissions are apparently up 8% on last week. So nowhere near the peak of last January (thank fuck). But then you wouldnt expect them to be yet, let's see what happens in a couple if weeks.

Stickytreacle · 17/12/2021 19:13

I think they mean that case numbers are the worst that they've been, it takes a while for that to translate I to hospital admissions, I believe there are currently 60 something cases of omicron variant in hospital, it's a waiting game to see if this is going to be as bad as previous variants or not.

Kendodd · 17/12/2021 19:16

I'd be very interested to know what percentage of those admissions are vaccinated.

minipie · 17/12/2021 19:22

Case numbers are highest ever (but that may well be due to increased testing compared with last year)

Hospital numbers are nowhere near Jan. Not even half.

Lorriestakingppe · 17/12/2021 19:24

Hospitalisations and deaths are fairly steady, they must mean case numbers which are the highest ever but maybe if it's mild they won't translate too far into hospital numbers

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 17/12/2021 19:25

People talk with such authority about these things so I was genuinely amazed that we're at about 25% of where we were in Jan. With all the media hype it feels like we're in the same boat.

We have seen an increase this week in numbers, as well a a lot of unvaccinated young people in resus with low oxygen levels.. lets see how it pans out over the next few weeks

Was definitely hospital figures we were talking about because I asked specifically.

Yes, I guess it is just a waiting game.

How do you know it’s 60?

Sayid said 10 a couple of days ago. He’s probably lying though..

ChequerBoard · 17/12/2021 19:33

Depends which area of the country you are in. The national stats don't really tell the story. In London admissions are up 33% in the last week.

x2boys · 17/12/2021 19:35

People don't get COVID and immediately go into hospital cases and deaths have been stable for months only rising gradually ,it's only in the last few days they have gone up dramatically ,so it remains to be seen the impact Omicron will have .

rarityroast · 17/12/2021 19:44

@Kendodd They publish this in the vaccine surveillance reports.

I suspect the comment ‘hospital numbers are the worst they’ve ever been’ may not entirely relate to covid. It’s winter. The NHS struggles every year with admissions, stories about hours & hours waiting in ambulances or corridors. And now with covid too & the idiots that won’t get vaccinated, it’s even worse..

Youngatheart00 · 17/12/2021 20:11

The unvaccinated young people is so tragic. Im so angry at the idiots spreading crap on social media. I have young (indirect) family who have refused to be vaccinated and have been spreading crap on Facebook and both now seriously ill (not hospitalised but really not good at all)

Just get the bloody vax

Icequeen01 · 17/12/2021 20:14

My friend's son had to go into hospital yesterday (but thankfully discharged later in the day) due to Covid. He was the only one on the ward - unless he was in an over-spill ward or something.

What do you mean by deaths going up dramatically in the last few days? I can't see that in the official figures?

x2boys · 17/12/2021 20:44

Sorry I meant cases have gone up dramatically,it remains to be seen what impact that will have on deaths

Flyingbymypants · 17/12/2021 20:51

My hospital has been on red or black alert all week. At present covid numbers relatively low ~15% of what they were at last peak, but hospital still full. Whether that's because of winter , delayed discharges due to social crisis or the fact that we haven't cancelled elective procedures yet I don't know. Management predicting a very grim few weeks.

Flyingbymypants · 17/12/2021 20:52

Cases are going up though

DaisyNGO · 17/12/2021 20:57

NHS data is very detailed, they must have a v good team working on it

I don't watch media, I prefer the spreadsheets (i know, I'm sad and dull)

Multicolouredsequins · 17/12/2021 21:16

Every online news story about Covid seems to have the comments section overrun with anti vax trolls and conspiracy theorists at the moment. Definitely not helping the situation. The stats, science and figures are available, but maybe not as easily accessible as they should be to counteract the nonsense. I think we'll know by early January how serious the latest situation is.

MissyB1 · 17/12/2021 21:20

You’re too early OP. Look at hospital numbers in about 2 weeks time. The case numbers just haven’t translated into admissions yet.

This isn't looking good though 😒
