100% Attendance award :-(

Anyone's school still do 100% attendance award... with the added twist of adjusting it so that the children that had been absent due to covid reasons still got their certificate?

Any child off with 'regular' infectious illnesses were not given this award despite the fact that those with chicken pox or sickness bug cannot attend school.

Ds came home with his 100% attendance and he was only off for 10 days while myself and my husband had covid 🤦‍♀️ Could never stand the award before, but this seems like madness!

It's a pointless award, explain why to your children.

Weredone · 17/12/2021 16:57

I’m a teacher and I’ve argued with senior leaders about this very thing this half term. Absolutely shocking that they are still handing out awards and rewards based on attendance at this time.

Scarabella · 17/12/2021 16:58

Agree that it's madness to have such an award. Suggests being ill is somehow failing.

Weredone · 17/12/2021 16:59

At least your school tried to be nice and take into account covid! We had some students not receive awards and rewards because they’d been off too much - isolating or with covid 🤦🏼‍♀️

bumblefeline · 17/12/2021 16:59

Yes our school have had a reward day and a trip bowling since Sep. My child was excluded as they was ill with a chest infection and not covid. Yesterday's trip was particularly cruel, day trip bowling and cinema for those with 100%, full lessons for the ones who have been off less than the ones with covid.

HamSam · 17/12/2021 17:02

Wow. That is dreadful 😖

I really thought we had seen the end of this ridiculous award.

The fact they have adjusted it for covid is great for this covid affected children, but it makes no sense to exclude other illnesses in it.

I can't send my child to school if they have another contagious illness, but they will be penalised for being ill 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
Bubblty · 17/12/2021 17:05

Can you take them off on the day they give the award as a protest?

OliveTree75 · 17/12/2021 17:15

I had to give out 3 100% attendance awards today. Alongside way more attendance warning letters when most of the kids that were off were off due to a covid outbreak. Wasnt factored in at all 🙈

BurbageBrook · 17/12/2021 17:16

Complain OP. It’s nonsense. I’m sure you could find some research online to back up why it’s wrong and then send that too.

Horst · 17/12/2021 17:17

Yup middle child got award. Youngest nope because she had covid. They are a load of bs anyway.

RocioMartinez · 17/12/2021 17:21

Yes - and I have written to the Head to point out how ridiculous it is in the current environment.

RocioMartinez · 17/12/2021 17:23

My understanding is that the attendance warnings are mandated by Ofsted and have to be sent out (I phoned and queried this when I was sent one in the Spring). The awards are at the discretion of the school and complete nonsense.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 17/12/2021 17:24

Yup. My DD got upset a couple of years ago. She didn't get one as she has medical conditions. They also did an award last year for anyone who scooted / walked to school in a 2 week period. When she went back (after illness so we hadn't been aware of it) she was the only one not to get one.

HamSam · 17/12/2021 17:24

They l probably thought they were doing the right thing... but it just doesn't make any sense! Illness is illness and if you can't attend, you can't attend! Stop penalising children for illness or because parents keep children off!

Maybe I can suggest an award for children who didn't catch covid this term. Just as ridiculous 🤦‍♀️

Take you child out of of school for a day as a protest. Ideally coordinated with other affected families. Attendance awards are, and always have been, divisive ableist nonsense. The sooner we can get rid of them the better.

Fucking hell this is awful- I'd have gone nuts over something like that.

We complained after the first reward but the school couldn't give a toss.

Lots of angry parents on the schools parent facebook group.

A girl was even excluded from the trip not because of covid, because she was hospitalised with it and wasn't off the standard 10 days.

Really dislike the school so much right now.

LumosSolem · 17/12/2021 17:35

The SLT at your school must be incredibly hard of thinking!

HamSam · 17/12/2021 17:35

That is shocking @bumblefeline. Can you write to the governors or you local mp?

My little boy missed out on a chance to win a £50 voucher as he missed 4 days of school due to a DISABILITY HE WAS BORN WITH. It's very albeist and discriminating I hate it. My schools head teacher said there was nothing she could do about it. Hmm

Surely someone with 100% attendance has already been rewarded by having so many inspiring lessons and having learnt so much?
bumblefeline · 17/12/2021 17:38

I think I might email the chair, they have disgusted me so much. No point speaking to the head, he is a much good as a chocolate fireguard. I spoke personally to the teacher whose idea it was. She thought it was a good idea.

It really is a horrible and discriminating award.

I will be writing to our head about it.
