Why oh why do people use this word in association with coronavirus? I’m so sick of it I feel like punching the next person who uses it. Stay f…ing safeXmas Angry

I didn't mind it at first when we were all terrified of bodies piling up in the streets but now it just makes me Hmm

KilmordenCastle · 17/12/2021 16:27

@the80sweregreat

The things that wind people up on here amazes me ! I have said it to people or ' stay away from the germs' ! I suppose they are rolling their eyes behind my back , but it's just being nice and hoping people don't catch covid.
But why use the word safe? For me it's definitely the word safe in the context of a virus that annoys me. If I was about to go to a really dangerous place then someone telling me to stay safe would make sense. But when people just generally say "Stay safe" I want to say "from what? Getting run over? Getting mugged? Lions? Be specific".

I don't associate viruses with safety. Viruses are just an unfortunate part of life that everyone experiences. I don't understand how you can be "safe" from them.

This thread has made me smile on a shitty day Smile

hamstersarse · 17/12/2021 16:33

Stay safe, stay small

Me too. I want to say, 'sorry is there someone rampaging the streets with a machete?'
TheVampiresWife · 17/12/2021 16:36

Formal emails which are signed off with 'stay safe'.

I was going to get in the bath with the toaster but seeing as my bank manager told me to stay safe, I'm having second thoughts Hmm

Stuffin · 17/12/2021 16:37

Hell yes.

I don't want to stay 'safe'. I want to live my life with all the risks it contains because it's bloody lovely to live even if that means 1 day or a million days.

Staying 'safe' means now avoiding people, avoiding crowds, avoiding eating out. Basically avoiding things that give me joy.

People can keep their 'stay safe' 😁

bumblefeline · 17/12/2021 16:37

Hate it!, especially when used in the context of a holiday. "We felt so much safer"

IcedPurple · 17/12/2021 16:48

Or people describing how 'safe', or otherwise, they felt at the cinema, gym, cafe etc.
NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/12/2021 16:56

Yes, hate it. It's absolute nonsense when you think about it. There's no binary here -- safe or unsafe is a fallacy. It's more about degrees of risk.

Bolshybun · 17/12/2021 16:57

I hate it too and have from the start. Staying safe from a virus is bizarre! Staying safe in that context comes across as lock yourself away and avoid everyone.

Omicrone · 17/12/2021 16:57

Oh god totally, gives me the rage!

Also, 'at risk'. As in 'oh that person mixed with another person and has put us all at risk' - usually said by someone is not in anyway clinically vulnerable.

Malteser71 · 17/12/2021 17:01

I usually say ‘define safe.’

PieMistee · 17/12/2021 17:05

God don't you have other things to pick at. I wouldn't say it but there is far more other pressing things to get annoyed at. Like people that say "the covid", those that walk slowly when they are perfectly capable of walking fast (looking at you DH) or who put the fucking empty biscuit packet back in the drawer.

Malteser71 · 17/12/2021 17:08

Oh the slow walkers.

Yes you’re right about them.

Doesn’t make ‘stay safe’ less irritating. I think it’s the idea that we are all ‘unsafe.’

milly74 · 17/12/2021 17:08

yes it drives me mad

HesterShaw1 · 17/12/2021 17:13

People put empty biscuit packets back in the drawer? 😱😱😱😱

They need to be hunted down by hungry wolves

Jourdain11 · 17/12/2021 17:14

It's used in mental health-related fields a lot.
"Are you able to keep yourself safe?" = "Are you going to go and jump off something once we've finished this conversation?"

Safe journey makes sense to me - like, drive safely, if it's a long journey for instance.

Agree that with, "hope you are staying well" or "take care" would make better sense!!

Spruceifer · 17/12/2021 17:24

Couldn't agree more!!

twocatsandtwokids · 17/12/2021 17:32

My mum dropped it back into a text today, first time in months and months ☹️ Made me miserable! Not again…

TheCreamCaker · 17/12/2021 17:33

Me too, but I also hate "Have a nice day" and being referred to as "guys"

schnubbins · 17/12/2021 18:15

I remember hearing it the first time around 9/11 .My husband got it in so many emails .remeber thinking even then that it was a strange phrase.

schnubbins · 17/12/2021 18:16

*remember

the80sweregreat · 17/12/2021 18:17

I do dislike the ' guys' thing when it's obvious I'm not one!!
