Anyone else panicking about not being able to taste all the delicious Christmas food?

I only lost my sense of taste and smell 3 days ago and I'm surprised how much it's bumming me out. I'm so worried about not being able to have a proper feast at Christmas!

I really didn't expect it to make me feel so weird and unnerved. Has there been any other virus that does this? It's so strange and worrying as presumably this is coming from something going wrong in my brain!

My husband and daughter say things still taste weird and they had Covid a few weeks back.

I've read that having lots of strong tastes/smells may help reset the system so you could maybe try it for a few days?

Also - this being MN I totally expect (having not RTFT) you'll get replies saying "count yourself lucky that's what you're worrying about etc etc" but I get it. As I can appreciate it would be crap over Christmas as it's the time of year I really enjoy food and drink and let myself enjoy it all.

So I'm glad your Covid is mild, but I also hope you get your senses back soon.

I found this article that briefly outlines ‘smell training’ for anyone interested. It looks like it would be easy to do at home.

Just a bit of hope... My smell and taste vanished on Wednesday, but today I could definitely detect improvement. Smell is now maybe 30% of normal, taste 50%? I have been using zinc supplements, vitamin A nasal drops and fluticasone nasal spray. Just to counter all the stories of 'no smell or taste whatsoever for six months'!

Yes me! Cannot taste a thing. I've had smell and taste disturbances quite a lot before with other viruses but never totally gone like this!

Last Christmas I had a wisdom and throat infection. The mouthwash I was using killed my taste buds and taste was bland - it wasn't covid as tested to be sure.

This year is going to be worse if I don't get it back

I've ordered meat from the Butchers. I'm wondering if I should cancel to save money 😅

To add, Dp had covid last week and his smell and taste went for 3 days and come back fully quickly!! So I'm hoping it'll be the same for me and you and everyone else going through this 😅

Oh that's promising!

I bought some fudge and I can barely taste it! Thought it was a good option as it's so sugary and sweet but no Sad

Apparently loss of taste and smell less common symptom with Omicron.

Puddingypops · 18/12/2021 17:13

Does anyone here know they have omicron and lost taste and smell? I’m hoping I have omicron because I’m one of the few unlucky people who cannot tolerate a vaccine (drs orders) and I currently am on day 3 of covid and terrified. I lost my smell and taste on day 1 but I’m hoping I have omicron because if it’s delta I’ll still probably catch omicron straight after!

Dozer · 18/12/2021 17:17

I’ve had covid twice and lost taste / smell for many months. It didn’t bother me that much, which surprised me as am very into food / taste and nice smelling toiletries and things.

Can still enjoy food textures etc.

The thing that’s bothered me most is becoming paranoid about not noticing if linen/ clothes/ body/breath smell bad!

There are some upsides: can’t smell farts, and it’s helped slightly reduce a longstanding binge eating problem Blush

Well I was hoping for a Christmas miracle but I still can't taste much and can't smell ANYTHING. I haven't had to moan about dh stinking out the bathroom for ages, every cloud!

Really sad about not being able to enjoy a good cheese feast!

I never realised how food orientated Christmas is until I lost my taste and smell.
My gifts were chocolates and candles. Can't enjoy them either.

Never mind, at least we won't put on weight from over indulging!

Nomorecoco · 25/12/2021 13:37

Had mine this morning, started to feel a bit off and then just gone about 20 minutes ago. Hoping it's just cos my nose is stuffy. Christmas Dinner ready in an hour 😞

Metalhead · 25/12/2021 14:16

Sorry to hear that OP. Sad I guess I’ve been lucky, my sense of taste started to come back on Thursday and is probably about 80% normal now (smell is still less but also coming back). Hope you manage to have a good Christmas despite everything!
