One in three Londoners unvaxxed?

I saw this stat whiz by on Twitter, but could not find a source. If true, can anyone tell me why? Is it because London has a larger proportion of the young and children? It is alarming.

Probably “all them foreigners” as the Daily Mail would say.

Dozer · 16/12/2021 08:24

Come on, the source is twitter?!

CSJobseeker · 16/12/2021 08:27

It's true - type a London postcode into this BBC tool.

CSJobseeker · 16/12/2021 08:28

Vaccine uptake is correlated with both age and ethnicity to a certain extent. Cities like London have younger, more diverse populations.

I think the story originated in the Times.

It is reported here in the Independent

Quartz2208 · 16/12/2021 08:30

Actually if you look at the UK Coronavirus board it does show some pretty stark figures for London

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/vaccinations?areaType=region&areaName=London

It is a very different vaccination heat map in London than anywhere else.

JanisMoplin · 16/12/2021 08:30

Yes, found the source. It is the Times. If you can access. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/21ae5800-5d1e-11ec-9cd9-b6f698a4b9a5?shareToken=c14ff69a6bdf6a17f9d6bf30633f2052

In Westminster, 4 in 10 people have not had a single jab.:(

It's probably not quite true because the denominator they use to calculate the proportion registered comes from the people registered with GPs. Because the London population is more mobile they end up with more people double registered with their old GPs and hence the population count used is more overstated in London than elsewhere. A lot of the Londoners who are down as being unvaccinated are actually living elsewhere and have had their shots. The same effect explains that dodgy stat that was doing the rounds a couple of months ago purporting to show that vaccinated people of working age are more likely to contract the virus than unvaccinated people.

However it wouldn't explain the whole difference. London also has a younger and hence less vaccinated population than the rest of the UK, and a higher population from minorities whose members are less likely to take up vaccination for various reasons - although the local authorities haven't given up and are still trying to increase coverage.

ColettesEarrings · 16/12/2021 08:32

In some London MSOA units it's as low as 45% having had a first dose - over half of residents are completely unvaccinated! Stamford North, Stamford South, and South Tottenham in particular.

MsWarrensProfession · 16/12/2021 08:33

Quite lot of the people down as unvaccinated on the Westminster population list are happily ensconced in Dubai or wherever and bought their vaccinations there. There's a large number of internationally owned second homes.

flippertyop · 16/12/2021 08:35

@Suranjeep Probably “all them foreigners” as the Daily Mail would say.

Well it an issue with ethnic minorities as we know and that's born out in the areas which are low in uptake.

Instead of being glib we need to accept it's an issue and find ways of resolving it because frankly the whole of the U.K. is suffering as a result

toomuchlaundry · 16/12/2021 08:35

My MIL doesn’t live in London but her, quite densely populated area, reports a similar percentage of unvaccinated people

CSJobseeker · 16/12/2021 08:36

Because the London population is more mobile they end up with more people double registered with their old GPs and hence the population count used is more overstated in London than elsewhere.

This doesn't really make sense. Your vaccine status is linked to your NHS number, so both GPs will have you recorded as vaccinated even if you had it in your home town. How do you think GPS know when someone has been to A walk in centre for a jab, for example?

So the denominator might be double counted (in London and in home town), but the numerator will also be double counted.

DayKay · 16/12/2021 08:36

Many Londoners have had covid so that could be affecting their decisions.

CSJobseeker · 16/12/2021 08:38

That does explain why other cities and large towns are seeing the same sort of percentage as London.

Look at the stats for most densely populated areas in the UK - they're not good

JanisMoplin · 16/12/2021 08:39

I am an ethnic minority. We are more at risk from Covid. I agree we need to find ways to resolve it. While avoiding racist finger pointing.I think there will also be a large transient population unregistered with the NHS and who think they need to be registered to get the vax.

While I am an ethnic minority, I do not identify with a distrust of modern medicine or a suspicion of the "establishment", but then I come from a different background to most.

gogohm · 16/12/2021 08:40

The exact figure is likely to be smaller due to those vaccinated elsewhere and it not being linked to their medical records, double gp registration or vaccination abroad but it's an issue in London and in other cities to a lesser extent. Compare to my town and we have 94% coverage in over 18's

CSJobseeker · 16/12/2021 08:41

Also - how does this explain the fact that some of the poorest areas have some of the lowest rates?
Sandsnake · 16/12/2021 08:41

Age and ethnicity.

I have a horrible feeling that Omicron will hit poor neighbourhoods pretty hard, much like the first wave. Inner city areas with high ethnic diversity, multi generational housing and dense populations have actually had relatively low rates recently - I would imagine due to high previous infection rates. But if Omicron reinfects those who have had other strains then these areas will be badly hit, especially due to low vaccination rates.

ColettesEarrings · 16/12/2021 08:41

There are wards in Peterborough, Birmingham, Manchester, Oldham, Wolverhampton where first dose rates are unfer 50%. Leeds has a ward where first doses are under 40%.

CSJobseeker · 16/12/2021 08:42

Obviously I meant to say: "That doesn't explain why other cities and large towns are seeing the same sort of percentage as London." upthread.

The only one that’s said this is you…..

I’m assuming you’re trying to show how left wing and liberal you are, but funny this is straight where your mind goes to….

onlychildhamster · 16/12/2021 08:44

Many people in London have moved elsewhere but have not deregistered from their GP. I still get NHS letters for the previous occupants of my flat asking them to take the vaccine but I know they live in Ireland now.

bruffin · 16/12/2021 08:46

Im on the borders of London with around 70% fully vaccinated and we have a low rate of coronovirus ie 388 per 100000

onlychildhamster · 16/12/2021 08:46

Same for my SIL, she lives in Israel but the NHS has her down as a vaccine refuser. London can be pretty transient, of my DH's 3 siblings, 2 have left London but are still registered, he is the only one to buy in London and settle down. Many people in London move country and therefore don't need to switch GP
