Symptoms after a recent case - should I test?

DS (14) had Covid in early Nov (positive result on 8 Nov). He had his first vaccine a few days before that. He'd now complaining of a sore throat. Should I/can I test? We were told by T&T that you can't do a PCR within 90 days of a positive test result as it may show a false positive.

So I'm confused as to what I should do now! In normal circumstances, I'd take him for a PCR for a sore throat but is there any point if it's going to show up as positive anyway?

You shouldn’t retest unless you develop new symptoms. If you get new symptoms you retest.

Ignore my order link 🙄

It would be very unlikely he had it again so soon. Try a lateral flow as these tend to pick up the live virus whereas pcr can pick up dead virus.

We're in the same boat!

DS(13) had covid mid October, I had it early November.

He currently has a stinking snotty nose, headache and chesty cough (which are the symptoms I had with covid, but he didn't).

In theory he should test because he has 2/3 main symptoms but test and trace say no test because he's had one in the last 90 days!!

I know the chances of him having it again so soon are slim but theoretically he could have the new variant?

He's not vaccinated either because they did them in school within the 28 of him having Covid, so his appointment is next week!

Having similar ds tested positive october had one jab late august when eligible
Now has sore throat and slight cold and test and trace said may show positive from last infection still if we test and advised against plus he also doesn't have any of the three main symptoms , which he didn't have first time around either
I have kept him home couple days but he has work at weekend so going to tell them and let them decide if he goes in
Totally well in himself and cold lasted about 24 hrs , slight sore throat 2 days - he has allergies as well so snotty nose / sneezing can be regular in mornings
Its difficult and I spoke to gp as well who also never knew what to advise

worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 13:13

@IToldYouIWasFreaky call 119 and ask this is what I did, then at least I feel like I am following there advise

worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 13:15

@FrangipaniBlue when did you speak to test and trace ? Earlier they told me ds should test if he has 3 main symptoms- he doesn't have any of those so I was told not to unless he develops any , not that he had the 3 main symptoms first time around , especially at the beginning

FrangipaniBlue · 15/12/2021 13:29

This morning!

worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 14:21

@FrangipaniBlue its so hard knowing what to do when even they can't advise you isn't it
My ds has no cough or temp so thats one good thing and seems to be all ok now so may just of been his allergies as that presents as a slight sore throat and runny nose.
Hope your ds feels better soon

@IToldYouIWasFreaky what have you decided to do ? Re : testing

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 16/12/2021 09:16

I got him to do a LFT yesterday which came back negative. And his sore throat is gone, he's just a bit sniffy now. So I think it was/is just a bit of a cold? I think I'll carry on getting him to do LFTs...if they keep being negative and then he gets a positive, that'd be an indicator of a new infection, right?

@IToldYouIWasFreaky il am doing the same , ds sore throat gone and just a bit sneezy now like a cold, but we will do lfts anyway as that picked it up last time, plus rest pf us will do daily LFT's as if he had this new strain it would surely spread to one of us
119 said to only re do pcr if develops one of main symptoms
He is working tomorrow so going to get him to call them and see if they want him in as he seems well today
Sneezing only started when he shoved the swab up his nose and was just a days worth

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 16/12/2021 10:39

What are 119 defining as the main symptoms?
