Will the system let me book a vaccine and then cancel the second dose straight away?

Trying to book a vaccine. Numerous local choices for the first dose and then the closest place with appointments for a second dose is 30 miles away. Can't book one appointment without booking the other but if I book my second dose there, will it let me cancel straight away? I don't want to sit on an appointment somebody who'll actually travel to that centre could have while waiting for something more local to be released.

Yeah, you can do a "manage my appointment" thing once it's booked.

Bramshott · 15/12/2021 09:18

I don't think you can book a first dose as a booster though?

kimlo · 15/12/2021 09:24

they don't want a booster, they just don't want to travel 30 miles for their second.

How soon is your first appointment? If it's soon I would wait until after you have had the first one. Or I would look to see if theres a walk in option and not book either.

The OP hasn't mentioned booking a booster.

It should let you cancel OP. I had to cancel and rebook my second dose a couple of times.

Book the two appointments but wait until you have had your first dose before cancelling the second dose. Exactly what appointments you can book for dose 2 will depend on what vaccine you are given for dose 1. I had a very similar plan to yours back last summer but then I was given the Moderna vaccine for dose 1 and all the alternative appointments locally for dose 2 were only giving Pfizer and I had to track down a centre doing Moderna before I could get dose 2 as a walk-in. You won't be doing anyone any harm by holding onto your dose2 appointment until after your first jab. Once the system knows what jab you had for dose 1 you can use the "manage your booking" link on the nhs booking site and it will allow you to see what alternatives are available before you cancel the appointment you are holding - and there will be plenty of time for someone else to take the appointment that you free up.

I had a appointment for my booster. Then I decided to get a walk in booster as I could get it sooner.

The website crashes so I couldn’t cancel the booking. But they emailed me and told me it had automatically been cancelled. I was quite impressed.

I did similar, booked the first locally but couldn't get a local one for my second. Kept cancelling and re-booking the second gradually closer and closer to home, until I got the same place as my first. (A mile from home)

Book both. Once you've had your first then keep checking to see if you can rearrange the 2nd.
