Trying to create a title so as not to panic anyone!

What are your guesses, will schools close again?

I think so unfortunately. Not sure how long for...

Chakraleaf · 14/12/2021 20:30

I hope not but I believe they will.

Dghgcotcitc · 14/12/2021 20:30

Teachers will call for it, whether they are successful is anyone’s guess

Tilly28 · 14/12/2021 20:31

I really hope not. For my children and also because I'm a teacher. But something does need to happen. Possibly bringing back bubbles which makes things lots harder for staff but will hopefully keep the children and adults a little safer!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/12/2021 20:31

Really depends on how hospitalisations are looking by then. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess at this stage. I think it would be disgusting if they did close again though. There are 2 weeks now to think about mitigations to avoid it.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 14/12/2021 20:32

I think it's inevitable. There are already too many staff off and not enough supply teachers to cover in our area. I personally know of 3 schools that have already closed entirely several days earlier than planned due to staff shortages. I honestly cannot see it being any better in 3 weeks time when the new term starts.

They won't? They're calling for mitigations to keep them open.
4pmwinetimebebeh · 14/12/2021 20:33

I hope not it will break me.

Not one teacher in my school wants us to shut.

Assssssssssss · 14/12/2021 20:34

I don't think these posts our helpful nobody knows what's going to happen.

halcyondays · 14/12/2021 20:34

I really hope they don’t but it’s possible.

Flamingolingo · 14/12/2021 20:35

My 5yo has just tested positive. He’s the 14th child in his class to do so in under a week. It’s utterly rampant, and whilst he’s totally fine, we don’t know how much chaos uncontrolled spread will cause. I think it very likely that numbers will be far too high to go back initially. I also think that had Boris closed schools at the end of last week the whole situation would have been better.

JaffavsCookie · 14/12/2021 20:35

I don’t know a single teacher who wants schools to close, nor did last time.
I love my job and I love being face 2 face with my students, bloody soul destroying teaching to the void that is an iPad.

ComDummings · 14/12/2021 20:36

I really hope not

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 20:36

I don’t know but we’ll get a thread a day asking until then

Dghgcotcitc · 14/12/2021 20:37

mitigatiibs that involve socially distancing si half the class is in (with I assume priority for key workers) or shut but open to key worker (which is half the class!).. teachers are calling for the first but they are very similar and a non key worker kid I don’t think any teacher thinks they should be in a class come January!

whatagloriousthingtobe · 14/12/2021 20:37

With an autistic 7 year old I seriously hope not. Both of us were at breaking point and nearly in tears most days trying to do home learning

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/12/2021 20:37

Teaching online is utterly shit. Doing it with your own kids at home doubly so. Nobody wants schools to shut. I’d be fine(ish) with blended/part time schooling if needed because at least you get to set eyes on your students - or a one/two week firebreak with a definite end. But that’s as far as I’d go.

WoodenReindeer · 14/12/2021 20:37

I wistfully remember the days we were "reassured" children didn't spread covid. Then they were "vectors of transmission" or whatever it was? Then it was that schools were somehow covid safe....

Schools really are where its spreading . Ideally a years investment could have changed this. I am fearful of a lockdown that could have been prevented.

I have no idea how they'd do it without furlough/everyone claiming mental health/key worker needs though?

The government has had well over a year to work out mitigation. We close on Thursday until January 4th. It's unreasonable to suggest that schools should be trying to fix anything with bog all notice.

This teacher is not calling for it; I hated online learning. It was soul destroying.

I did not say schools should be doing it, I mean the government should.

ChocolateRiver · 14/12/2021 20:39

I’m a teacher and I don’t want school to close. My year 7s are the poorest intake I’ve ever know. The kids need to be in school, but I am concerned about the spread come January and keeping the windows wide open isn’t really viable in the middle of winter.

Spacemonkey2016 · 14/12/2021 20:39

I hope not. But my son's school has closed already at this point, so who knows. I'm assuming pubs/shops/events etc would all close first surely?
