Not allowed to do my sales job until fully vaccinated

I delayed getting my vaccination due to a genuine fear of vaccines and having already gotten Covid antibodies from having the virus. I have decided to get the vaccine now because I just want this crap over and done with and I accept my role in getting society back to a level of normality.

I am booked for my first dose today at 14:30 and second dose is booked for 9th feb 2022.

I am an estate agent. My work sent a group message to say that any unvaccinated staff can not conduct any face to face appointments until they are fully vaccinated. This means no opportunity to earn commission by listing properties or selling houses, so my salary will essentially drop from roughly 43k to 24k. This is because I earn so much from doing the appointments and 24k is my basic. I have a daughter to support and I know everyone is going to say it’s my fault for delaying my vaccination but I just can’t believe this forced vaccination is spilling out in to non medical non clinical work.

For context, I booked my vaccine last week before I knew about the work changes.

What’re people’s thoughts on this kind of approach? My vaccinated colleagues are shocked by this too.

@ElftonWednesday

These 'PR stunts' are common in many countries. In dental offices, in opthalmologists, in beauty salons, in hair salons, in Ubers. It is coming to the UK

I'm sure some organisations will continue to not take legal advice and make the law up as they go along until they have a major personal injury claim for a bad reaction to a vaccine they made someone have.

Maybe. I am not aware of the law. However customers like me will continue to use vaxxed plumbers, beauticians, cleaners and so on. I haven't had any trouble finding them. I too am risking that CV DH will die. So frankly I don't give a fuck.
JuergenSchwarzwald · 14/12/2021 13:29

If I was selling a house I would want to know anyone coming in and showing people round was vaccinated, tested and and would wear a mask in my house

why? If you are scared of getting covid (and presumably you are vaccinated yourself), let the agent do their job of selling the house and go out while the viewers are there.

Comefromaway · 14/12/2021 13:30

I am very pro vaccination. But I respect everyone's individual right to choose. My son for example has decided to delay his 2nd vaccination for an extra 3 months to take advantage of the natural immunity he will have from having caught covid last month, particularly given the fact that if he were just 2 months younger he would be in the age group that is advised to wait.

You would be much much better off asking these tradespeople if they have taken a covid test before serving you. Vaccinated people are much more likely to be lacksadaisical with regards to testing and this more likely to spread the virus.

Plumbers and cleaners are generally fending off work so I am surprised that they are willing to pander to this nonsense. Your DH will not die because an unvaccinated person has been in your house. You should be asking for them to do a test if you are that worried.

True, we have so much work it's untrue. We are refusing numerous jobs.
LaurieFairyCake · 14/12/2021 13:32

I also think you should take legal advice

If the NHS can give 3 months notice to staff then an estate agent can

I am aware of the law and while I am fully vaccinated to the extent possible myself I am concerned with the wider issues at stake for society.

MintJulia · 14/12/2021 13:34

Thinking back over the last year, the boiler service man, the chimney sweep, the plumber and the chap who fitted some flooring for me last summer, all provided copies of their vaccination certificates before arriving.

Sorry OP but if you go into people's houses to work, I think this is what is expected now.

But you have no right to know about individuals, only a company's general policy, so put up with it or don't sell your house.

That's the point though. The OP's employer is putting a general policy in place, so if you want a vaccinated agent coming into your home, that's now the agency to use. Avoids personal questions, smart.

As I have already pointed out, you can get double jabbed in three weeks. This isn't exactly a busy time of year to sell properties...

I haven't seen any data suggesting the vaxxed are lackadaisical with testing. Yet another stick to beat the vaxxed with.

I got my cleaners and plumbers from Gumtree. I am in SE London. I was inundated. You can believe me or not as you choose and call it whatever you want. I am amazed people will stick up for the unvaxxed but not for the rest of us not to be in close quarters with the unvaxxed.

LookItsMeAgain · 14/12/2021 13:37

I've had Covid but based on when I had it, it was probably the alpha strain (Dec 2020 in to Jan 2021).
I had natural antibodies following this infection but for that strain of the virus. I wouldn't be relying on my natural immunity here to keep me or others safe from the virus. There have been many versions and strains of the virus since then. I've been vaccinated when I was due to be vaccinated. I'm looking forward to getting my booster shot when I'm called for it.
I could foresee that if I didn't get vaccinated, if my employer decided to make us return to work in the office, I couldn't have returned to the office and my working conditions would have changed, of my doing (or lack of doing in that situation).
I don't see your inaction to get vaccinated as any different to be honest @VioletUltraViolet. You made that choice not your employer. They are finally stepping up and saying if you want to be one of the team that goes out and does face to face house showings with potential buyers, you must be vaccinated to do that. You will be down money until you're fully vaccinated but once you are fully vaccinated, your money will return up to the level you are more used to.

As a potential house buyer, I'd rather be shown around a house by an estate agent that has been vaccinated than one that hasn't. Even if they are wearing a face mask while showing the property to me. It's a level of care that I would expect from everyone who has a job that interacts with the public.

As for the comment that someone made about carpet fitters or plumbers or hairdressers that come to visit your house to do their work, I'd expect them to be vaccinated too. There is a level of respect here and I would also respect them if they asked me if I was vaccinated and I said I wasn't and they declined to work in my home.

That's not the point of the thread though, it's a side issue.

JanisMoplin · 14/12/2021 13:38

I will also continue to take medical advice on who I allow in my house from my DH's consultant rather than people on MN. My heart has stopped bleeding for the unvaxxed, tbh. Except those with medical conditions who are very few in number. Not liking vaccines doesnt count.

Comefromaway · 14/12/2021 13:40

Hopefully your dh's consultant will give you the correct advise about testing then.

CatsArePeople · 14/12/2021 13:41

This is awful.
I'd rather take a pay cut/ look for another job than compromise your health. Your work will not compensate for any vaccine injury, and also no guarantees they won't fire you anyway.

JanisMoplin · 14/12/2021 13:43

My cleaner who is the only one who comes regularly, tests regularly. The plumber is a one off. I don't know why people are so pissed about who I allow in my house. It is my house. Englishman, castle, etc etc.

luverlybubberly · 14/12/2021 13:44

I don't want to scare you but it's expected that fully vaccinated will mean 3 doses early next year. You might want to check with your employer that they mean 2 and not 3.

LifeIsWhat · 14/12/2021 13:45

@JuergenSchwarzwald

I would take legal advice on this. You are partly vaccinated and this is a unilateral change to your terms and conditions of employment. I do not think it is reasonable in non-healthcare/social care setting.

I also think it's up to people to get vaccinated to protect themselves, and leave other people to get vaccinated or not. The issue for the wider country is the pressure on the NHS, but I don't think that's an ethical conundrum an estate agency needs to worry about.

It would actually make more sense for you to test before every meeting, as vaccinated people can still transmit the virus.

Very well said. I am shocked to read other comments.
Horseyhorsey3 · 14/12/2021 13:46

@LaurieFairyCake

This 100%

Some of the comments on here are disgusting. Not everyone who is unvaxxed is a biohazard, and if covid is that much of a worry then regular testing would be the more sensible option.
Good luck OP

JanisMoplin · 14/12/2021 13:48

Personally I find the mollycoddling of the unvaxxed disgusting, but we can each have our own opinions in our own houses, two years into this pandemic.

thisplaceisweird · 14/12/2021 13:50

I don't agree with you OP, but you shouldn't have to wait til Feb. Find a way of getting your second one earlier.

Dagnabit · 14/12/2021 13:50

Not sure if it has been said already but it may be worth applying for UC to see if you would qualify for help with your childcare costs - I suppose it depends on how long it takes to get fully vaccinated, particularly if you need the 3rd jab.
