Pcr nostrils only?

Has anyone had a positive from a nostrils only pcr? My son has autism, major sensory issues around taste and texture. Outbreak in his class so health agency have asked all of class to get a pcr. I'm totally on board and have been doing lateral flows on him anyway which he's fine with.

Last time we went to do a pcr he just couldn't do the tonsils (he's just turned 11). I couldn't do his tonsils either without risk of it rubbing all over the place or him biting down on it. He seems to gag at the slightest touch.

I assume the staff will say to just do nostrils but is it very accurate?

My daughter tested positive from nostril only PCR. She's 4 so it wasn't possible to do the throat, most kids under 5 who have tested positive it will have been nose only.

My 5 year old has autism he only will do the nose he had a
Positive pcr in September and it wasn't a good swab only nose and in for seconds

I think if it's in your body It will show

My son tested positive on a nostril only sample. That was bloody traumatic enough there was no way I was going to get to his tonsils.

AndPeggy08 · 13/12/2021 14:42

Yes, I’ve just received a positive after only doing my nostrils on my PCR. I couldn’t do my tonsils as I have a strong gag reflex.

Tatum1234 · 13/12/2021 14:42

Yes I tested my 9&6 year olds nostrils only. Both tested positive that way.

Needadviceagain · 13/12/2021 14:48

I can not tell you how relieved I am (and sorry for all the positives you and your kids all had) to hear that. I'll feel much more confident about just doing nostrils now and won't sit there fretting about how accurate the test was

Yes, my DD 9 tested positive last week on a PCR just on 2x nostrils only.

nononoyesno · 13/12/2021 14:55

I took my DC for a PCR this morning and was told for under-11s I only had to do nostrils. First time we've been told this - I guess because of how difficult it is to do young kids' tonsils . . .

BlibBlabBlob · 13/12/2021 15:01

Yep it's fine, DD is 11 and did a very poor attempt at nostril swabbing but still got a positive result. She's also autistic and wasn't about to let me anywhere near her with a swab! Hence the very non-invasive and brief swabbing of herself.

Needadviceagain · 13/12/2021 15:01

Pcr booked for 5pm. Wish me luck!

Best of luck!

FruitToast · 13/12/2021 15:08

Good luck! Even I only do nostril as my gag reflex is too strong to reach my tonsils. My 6 year old DD tests herself (on ASD pathway) and still got a positive. She's perfectly happy with it as long as she's in control so might be worth considering if you think he might be able to do his own?

Hello my son was in hospital all of December last year and he had a pcr every three days and all were just nostrils
He vomited on the nurse after the first throat try and they never tried again Grin

Warhertisuff · 13/12/2021 15:37

I wish I'd known that back in October when I took my DD to be done... It was a massive struggle in the testing centre car park- lots of screaming and wailing.... She was negative.

Interestingly when i did it again last week and she was positive, she was fine!

Warhertisuff · 13/12/2021 15:39

Especially when the guidance is that if it touches any other part of your mouth you're meant to get another swab... Totally unrealistic!

Has anyone ever managed to achieve this?
Frlrlrubert · 13/12/2021 15:52

DD (5) got a positive from a nostril only swab PCR as well. I'm impressed DH managed to get a valid sample at all, she really doesn't like the tests.

BlibBlabBlob · 13/12/2021 17:17

Thank goodness the new LFTs are nicer swabs and nostril-only, for all ages - I'm absolutely fine with them but even doing the nostril swab on a PCR test is horrible. And I'm 44!
