Should Christmas school shows still be going ahead?

It’s not so much of a AIBU but just a general thought started by the imminent update from Boris tonight.

I have personally got my daughter’s school show coming up in a couple of days, but given the rising cases with this new strain and also people potentially having to isolate over Christmas which many people have been looking forward to after this last year…

Should school shows still be going ahead?

@Teeheehee1579

We had ours last week. Everyone had to do a LFT (and show a text from NHS as proof on the way in) plus mask up. More shows than usual to accommodate more social distancing. I was very glad. I don’t want yet another video.
You don't get a text for LFT unless you buy them?!
FallonCarringtonWannabe · 13/12/2021 07:36

They should be cancelled. The actors can rarely act and they are never accurate to the scripture. And always some blonde girl playing Angel Gabriel. Why? Why!

ItsSnowJokes · 13/12/2021 07:37

My child's school went ahead but without any parents/audience. They have recorded it and are now editing it before it is sent out for parents to watch. That seemed a fair compromise.

changingstages · 13/12/2021 07:44

Ours had already been planned to be outside (singing Christmas songs in the playground). Was looking forward to it but DD now has Covid, so that's out for us.

toomuchlaundry · 13/12/2021 07:46

You do get a text for LFT.

Parents attending things can be more for the parents benefit than for the children. If no parents attend children can still enjoy the performance (in fact some children may prefer not having an audience)

RichTeaRichTea · 13/12/2021 08:54

I’m in no doubt it’s for my benefit more than the children. Wouldn’t stop me being annoyed about it being cancelled.

bumbleymummy · 13/12/2021 08:57

Yes.

bumbleymummy · 13/12/2021 09:00

@Legoninjago1

Yes. Wear a mask. Stay away if you're unvaccinated.
Why are you singling out unvaccinated people? Firstly, just because someone isn’t vaccinated doesn’t mean they’re not immune. Secondly, vaccinated people could still be infected with delta and one of the concerns about this new variant is that the vaccine is less effective against preventing it. If schools are worried, they should ask everyone to do lfts and then get on with it. All this casual ‘othering’ needs to stop.
littlepeas · 13/12/2021 09:01

Absolutely everything should be going ahead with understanding shown towards individuals who would prefer not to attend. It should be an individual choice whether or not to socialise, attend events, etc, not a blanket ban. Some (many) of us just want to get on with our lives.

bingandflop · 13/12/2021 09:05

They have cancelled the church service at my kids school even though parents were never allowed to attend

DynamiteFilledRadish · 13/12/2021 09:05

Absolutely they should still be going ahead. Kids have sacrificed enough.

Deadcanary1 · 13/12/2021 09:50

No, they absolutely should not be going ahead! It"s completely irresponsible of schools to do this. Just wait till January when infections have gone through the roof because of gatherings like this, and there are no staff to teach because they are all isolating because they caught covid from being in stuffy school balls with unvaccinated kids, and very possibly adults as well!.
The very same parents on here who are demanding that these things to ahead will be the same ones whinging in January when there are not enough staff to reach their kids.

RichTeaRichTea · 13/12/2021 10:07

My children’s nursery have made great efforts to set everything up with plenty of space, ventilation etc. Just because some schools don’t have the facilities doesn’t mean that everyone should cancel everything.

EdithWeston · 13/12/2021 10:13

Ours is going ahead, but parents have been uninvited and will have to zoom in instead

Deadcanary1 · 13/12/2021 10:30

@EdithWeston Very responsible school. Pity they're aren't more like it!

Not much of a Christmas gift to the children to give their family covid over the break

oh right so they will give their family covid in a school hall but not when they are at home. I did not realise that so perhaps we need to shut schools after all.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/12/2021 10:37

@ichundich you do if you register it

Which they ask you to do

Which means you can a text and email so can show people rather then waft a pic of a test with one line which could be anyone’s

So they can keep tabs on people testing and negative

SleepingStandingUp · 13/12/2021 10:47

I'd have happily worn a mask, taken a LFT and sat in a coat cos the windows are open, but I'll accept a slightly dodgy sounding recording if it means the kids get to do it. What matters is that their hard work comes to fruition, that they get to do something fun, not that I have to be sat there to watch it live. We're all gutted to miss it but be matters more

SleepingStandingUp · 13/12/2021 10:49

Or all the time they spend in their much smaller classrooms, having lunch in the hall, coming and going around the school gates. All those places are immune. It's only if kids perform that covid will both to come and get them to kill their grannies
toomuchlaundry · 13/12/2021 11:05

Surely they are trying to prevent spread between parents by not having an audience. People want schools to stay open (although that is not helping COVID transmission), but having huge number of additional people in the school building is not necessary. Many young children actually prefer not to perform in front of adults they don't know.

Speaking to teachers last summer term when sports days etc were done without parents being there, they found it much more relaxed and the kids enjoyed it

Chakraleaf · 13/12/2021 11:08

Mine have just been sent home due to covid outbreak :(

landofgiants · 13/12/2021 11:18

Ours is online again this year.

ILookAtTheFloor · 13/12/2021 11:21

My daughter's was last week and it was wonderful- parents allowed, with masks.

My eldest has a music recital this afternoon, I'm going. Fabulous.

Make hay while the sunshines ie. When it's allowed, DO IT! Is my new motto.

fitsandgiggles · 13/12/2021 11:21

Yes they should, so should carol concerts, Christmas parties, Santa's grottos!! Kids have suffered enough!! It's time we learn to live with this!!

RichTeaRichTea · 13/12/2021 11:30

Absolutely - it’s more for the parents than the children, we all know that. But that has nothing to do with covid. If it’s so stressful for the children and teachers then maybe they should always be behind closed doors? Tacking it onto an argument about covid transmission is irrelevant.
