Should Christmas school shows still be going ahead?

It’s not so much of a AIBU but just a general thought started by the imminent update from Boris tonight.

I have personally got my daughter’s school show coming up in a couple of days, but given the rising cases with this new strain and also people potentially having to isolate over Christmas which many people have been looking forward to after this last year…

Should school shows still be going ahead?

Yep. My dc school have already had their annual carol concert (parents allowed), nativity (parents allowed) and gone to the pantomime.

This week they have a christingle to attend (parents allowed) and a class party.

Sunflowersinthewind · 12/12/2021 18:34

Double vaccination is not as much protection as it used to be though so a lft is still a good idea

Yubaba · 12/12/2021 18:35

Ours happened this week and they seemed to go ok but they limited the number of parents at each show.
My son is in year 6 and his Carol service is on Tuesday, they are only allowing 70 parents in the church and only 1 ticket per family. I’m really unsure whether it will happen now because obviously the church might decide it’s too much of a risk.
The head teacher is also recovering from Covid but it’s been kept very quiet from the parents.

EbonanzaScrooge · 12/12/2021 18:35

They aren’t here in Scotland, ours is being filmed but I really wish they were. Nobody has been allowed inside school buildings since the start of the pandemic and it’s an absolute joke that parents aren’t allowed in. We can attend concerts and football games with thousands but we can’t sit in a hall for 1 hour to see our children?

SayAaa · 12/12/2021 18:35

Yes of course they should, the poor children have suffered enough!

Lulu1919 · 12/12/2021 18:37

Ours went ahead
But small school
We did two performances on two separate days and chairs were in large hall in twos and then distanced by two feet min....each child was allowed two people ..masks worn and negative LFTs needed
All windows and doors were kept open

Whole school Service was cancelled as held in local church .
As was the End of Term Assembly . was children only but whole school in the hall...250 children plus staff etc

Suprima · 12/12/2021 18:41

God no- stay away from me. I am currently working in a freezing cold classroom, teaching in my coat due to ventilation measures. I am pregnant and would quite like to make it home to see my family without contracting covid due to the infants hall being filled to the brim with possibly unvaccinated parents. Every man and their dog has an excuse for mask exemption at my school it seems and parents are mouthy round my way about their ‘riiiiights’

Points about the football and going to see plays are irrelevant. I don’t see why teaching staff should be put at risk due to the government’s lax cross industry measures. Also, there is a huge supply shortage at the moment and we can’t risk any ill teachers as it would cause staffing chaos.

I am spending my evening tomorrow editing a lovely little Christmas movie that my year group did. Each child has a line, full of songs and Christmassy skits. They are really excited to watch it back!

WreckTangled · 12/12/2021 18:43

I think it depends really. Ours went ahead but our primary hasn't had a single case so no reason for it not to go ahead. The doors were open, chairs spaced out and all adults wearing masks.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 12/12/2021 18:43

Ours have all gone ahead but have been recorded for parents to watch online. Not as good as the real thing but better than nothing or ruined christmases due to isolation or illness.

icedcoffees · 12/12/2021 18:44

Yes, absolutely. If you're not comfortable, you don't have to attend.

starrynight19 · 12/12/2021 18:46

Ours has had to be cancelled. We are putting the ks2 online as they have done them individually in class bubbles. Our ks1 has been decimated by covid cases. One class has closed completely. Due to so many isolating Including staff and children they just couldn’t put it together.
And agreed upthread this year is much worse than last. The level of disruption in schools at the minute is horrendous.

BigSigh2021 · 12/12/2021 18:49

Yes, they absolutely should still go ahead. Kids generally get Covid mildly and have already missed out on so much. If you personally feel worried, don't go, but the parents who want to go should not be denied that chance, and the children deserve their chance to shine.

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 12/12/2021 18:50

Ours took place last week, school asked for parents to take a LFT on the day and to wear a mask. There was also a section reserved for people wishing to stay socially distanced.

m1shap3 · 12/12/2021 18:51

Yes

notanothertakeaway · 12/12/2021 18:59

@Sunflowersinthewind

Our school is requesting negative lfts and masks. Makes sense.
@Sunflowersinthewind

Out of interest, genuine question, not goady, would you trust people to do a LF test?

Sunflowersinthewind · 12/12/2021 19:05

@notanothertakeaway there is always that, yeah. Its difficult isn't it. I would hope people round here would

starrynight19 · 12/12/2021 19:37

@notanothertakeawayno sadly not Sad

Teeheehee1579 · 12/12/2021 19:42

We had ours last week. Everyone had to do a LFT (and show a text from NHS as proof on the way in) plus mask up. More shows than usual to accommodate more social distancing. I was very glad. I don’t want yet another video.

Dadhadaproton · 12/12/2021 19:44

Yes of course they should go ahead.

Constance1 · 12/12/2021 19:50

Yes of course, pubs/restaurants/theatres are remaining open. If you are worried don't go, but otherwise just be sensible and wear a mask, don't get too close to anyone etc. Ours is on Tuesday and I am dreading a last minute cancellation. But fingers crossed it will still go ahead!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/12/2021 19:55

Ours went ahead last week and so did the Christmas fair.

SuPerDoPer · 12/12/2021 19:55

Yes. Ours went ahead this week and rightly so. These year 2s have never known a normal school year, I'm happy for them.

The school restricted it to 1 ticket per family instead of packing out the hall to its limit but its right that the kids got to perform to a proper audience after weeks of practice and learning songs.

CakeRabbit · 12/12/2021 20:23

If they do go ahead and the event spreads covid they'll be isolating on Christmas Day, unable to leave the house. I know some people think it's great to cancel xmas day but others don't.

MrsHamlet · 12/12/2021 20:26

We've cancelled our concert. It's a huge community event.
We're going to record some of it

Dghgcotcitc · 12/12/2021 20:39

Shows in the west end are so yes I think so (ares are cancelled) but it’s ok I can go abs see thousands of people sing carols at the royal Albert hall instead..but sorry yes this is mumsnet and only schools spread covid and if we just got rid of them (but of course paid teachers in full) then covid would disappear!
