How long between exposure and infection?

Hello. I spent all day indoors and in a car with someone who tested positive later on that day. This was Thursday. We were unmasked. I've done a PCR, it was negative but surely I need to test again because of the incubation period? How long between exposure and infection has it been for anyone else? Thanks.

I know someone who tested positive day 5 after contact and someone else who tested positive day 8 (they had the same contact/exposure).

5 days is peak I think, but can be before or after then. When did you do the PCR? It could be a bit soon, what did track and trace suggest?
How many vaccines have you had?

Beepbopadooda · 12/12/2021 06:25

I tested the day after. Test and trace advised PCR asap and LFT every day but my contact had negatives on all her LFTs! Even after she received her positive result! I've had 3 vaccines and I'm 5 weeks post booster. I'm wondering then if I should PCR on day 5?

Yes retest. I thought the advice was day 3 & 8 but I’m not sure where I read that.

Neither of my friends tested positive on LFT. Both were positive on the PCR tests. One then lost sense of smell a few days after her positive PCR.

DH had contact on a Saturday night....started coughing on the following Tuesday but was still negative on LFT. Had pcr on the wed which was positive. I was in a car with DH on that Tuesday he had the cough, and ate a meal opposite him and I didn't catch it so it's not a given.

Whataday21 · 12/12/2021 07:13

Schools ask for immediate pcr, then another one on day 4 or 5. This is when my dd got her positive. Everyone else was negative. That might help guide you.

Day 2 and day 8 where we are. One of my DC tested positive 7 days after initial contact

I think it's weird they ask contacts to test straight away given it normally takes 5 days or so to be positive, and almost no one is positive within 24 hours. Surely they should ask people to wait at least 3 days before testing?

I had my first symptom on day 3, tested positive on day 4. I would do another PCR on Tuesday or Wednesday in your situation. Good luck!

LittleEsme · 12/12/2021 07:48

2 days for DH. 5 for DD.

RhubarbAndMustard · 12/12/2021 08:09

DS1 tested positive. Just as he was going back to school 10 days later, DS2 tested positive. I'd been testing him every day and was just about to go to twice weekly.

shouldistop · 12/12/2021 08:19

I think average incubation is 3-6 days

SoSickOfItNow · 15/12/2021 06:58

@Beepbopadooda have you restested?

Hello! Yes I did and negative thank goodness! I had my booster 6/7 weeks ago so I'm assuming I had good protection from that.
