Shielding

Do you think they will bring back shielding again for the CEV? I can’t see any guidance but surely if they are expecting 25-75k deaths by April it must be on the cards?

If I was CEV and wanted to shield, I wouldn’t wait for the government to tell me.
I think it’s a possibility the Gov may advise people to do it and I’m very worried for my mum, but I know she will not do it again as it made her depressed.
Are you CEV op?

Badbadbunny · 11/12/2021 19:17

I don't think so, otherwise that'll be another load of workers, teachers, nurses, etc., removed from the workplace, at a time when every organisation seems to be suffering staff shortages.

SpindlesAdventWhirl · 11/12/2021 19:19

I'm CEV (immune suppressed through medication) and I'm in this kind of self-imposed semi-shielding limbo that's bloody awful.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 11/12/2021 19:23

we can't afford to lose more staff and keep the business.....and all other staff, in a job

approx 15% are CEV where i works those, along with covid positives and isolations, would mean the rest of the workforce would be at breaking point trying to keep us afloat

I think it'll be considered for plan C - perhaps not all the CEV, but maybe the 500,000 most critically vulnerable for whom the jab might not work well or at all. I hope that if they do, they will consider furlough on medicalgrounds as well as restoring supermarket delivery priority, harmacy deliveries and council/volunteer support.

Possibly all the CEV if we need a plan D

That would seem sensible. At least start with the patients of working age on e.g. Rituximab which is known to be relatively problematic.

We have the data now to a degree that we didn't have during prior 'shielding'. I think we need to use it better.

Velvetmousse · 11/12/2021 20:40

Yes I’m CEV and worried about shielding. I can’t shield off my own back as I have a job I need to keep! If it was government ordered it’d be allowed.

I also think they'll want to hold off making decisions like this for another few weeks, whilst more information is gathered about how serious (or nor) the omicron disease is

Captainclinker · 11/12/2021 20:55

I didn't shield during last lockdowns, but have had to start some drugs to suppress my immune system recently due to a new auto immune disease so this has been at the back of my mind. I'm also a health care professional also worried about that too.

NinaProudman2022 · 11/12/2021 21:05

I shielded in the first lockdown and have been careful ever since. I feel I am fortunate to be able to work part time from home since March 2020. My productivity has increased as I am grateful to be still allowed to continue to work at home as I feel safe and happy there. But when we were all wfh some colleagues in my team really took the pee. I doubt they would bring back shielding again lightly as they can’t afford to pay furlough again.

we can't afford to do it again though

Same here @SpindlesAdventWhirl I don’t do anything social- the odd dash to the supermarket but all shopping delivered, no meals out, no cinema / theatre / drinks etc etc. Am self employed and freelance so WFH as much as possible with the odd real life meeting which I’ve now asked to move to zoom. 3 young DC, school is rife with it, my husband works for the NHS and has caught it twice. I got it right at the start in March 2020 and it took me months and months to feel anywhere near normal again. Really don’t want it again so am in semi-hiding from the world, as you say, and it’s thoroughly depressing!
gsaoej · 11/12/2021 21:09

If they brought in shielding for CEV, I think it would have to be in conjunction with a school closure. Otherwise there would be insufficient staff. So on that basis, probably they will avoid it until the last possibly moment.

Oh joy.

Statement to the nation by Boris at 8pm, being trailed as return to alert 4. I thought that was a level at which shielding used to be required - can anyone remember?

They've reissued some of the Alert policy documents such as this one:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-covid-19-alert-level-methodology-an-overview/uk-covid-19-alert-level-methodology-an-overview#:~:text=The%20alert%20levels%20are%3A,of%20healthcare%20services%20being%20overwhelmed

but I haven't found what that means for any possible further measures
