What IS the fuss about omicron?

GingerHouse · 10/12/2021 19:47

In all seriousness, data shows that not a single person has died from omicron and that’s in countries that have low vaccine uptake too.

The virus is going to mutate all the time and as things are showing this variant is very contagious and the vaccine doesn’t work as well against it, but it’s mild to almost everybody.

I feel like this is mass panic and for what reason?! I understand wearing a mask where applicable to help reduce the spread but I just don’t get it! Is this going to happen every winter forevermore?

[quote LuluBlakey1]@Starcup 'yeah and no deaths in under 24 year olds'

Not the case according to news today.

Oh right, so shock me…..how many in the last 18 months? ( ones with no underlying health conditions?….) people are quick to spout out figures, but forget to use the vital info…,.?

They they get upset when it’s pointed out that’s they have underlying health contains which we know can make covid worse but it’s still a vital difference and vital statistic….. again despite people crying and getting all aggressive when this is pointed out! (Like those on this thread 🤣)

kittensinthekitchen · 11/12/2021 23:58

Do you have any idea how many people are living with 'underlying health conditions' that they won't even know about? Until something goes wrong.

Starcup · 11/12/2021 23:58

😂😂😂😂 probably been here longer than you ‘hen’

Fancy getting all aggressive cos someone doesn’t with you online …. 😆

EmmaOvary · 12/12/2021 00:00

@kittensinthekitchen she knows. She just doesn't give a shit and is clearly only here to get a rise.

Do you have any idea how many people are negatively affected significantly because of lockdowns, restrictions etc….

People only seem to focus on the physical symptoms of covid. It significantly affects more people including children, in other ways. Sadly, nothing else matters……

Couldn’t be further from the truth.

Here to show physical covid isn’t the only thing that matters, but fuck those who suffer adverse mental health because of covid eh? Sod them fuckers, it’s only physical covid symptoms that count to some eh!

EmmaOvary · 12/12/2021 00:11

Nobody is minimising mental health here. But you manage to have completely minimised the deaths of a lot of people based on them having 'underlying conditions.' And then implied that some of them were at fault. So get off your high horse.

megustalacerveza · 12/12/2021 00:12

@Starcup

10 ‘healthy’ young, otherwise healthy people, with no underlying health conditions have died of covid in 18 minus…. Out of over 150,000…..

Do you understand how statistics work?

Do you undesirables what statistics are?

Di you understand than more adults die in car crashes each year?

Do you understand that people have freak accidents? Do you think people should stop playing sports, for examples, because 10 people does from contact sports?

Do you not understand that 'underlying conditions' can be things as common as asthma? Minor illnesses? Things that would probably never have killed them if they hadn't caught covid?

You're utterly deluded if you don't think thousands of people have died long before their time in this pandemic.

As stated - deaths matter but it can’t be solely based on that and sod EVERYTHING else. No.

Any you’re utterly deluded of you think restrictions and lockdown are only positive and save lots of lives.

ChilliGoat · 12/12/2021 00:25

At this stage of the first wave data showed not a single person had died of it yet

Death data lags because people take several weeks to reach that stage.

Hospitalisation data lags too.

While we wait 3-4 weeks to see if there are a worrying number of deaths, the virus doubles every 2-3 days. You have over 500x more cases, hospitalisations and deaths due to that doubling.

So by the point you realise a lot of deaths are happening, you’ve “locked in” another 3-4 weeks plus of deaths due to those infected in the meantime.

Exponential growth starts small.

Hopefully this won’t happen but we don’t know yet and if we wait to know we get so many more deaths.

I don't think they are only positive.

I do think they save lots of lives. This isn't really an opinion that's up for debate - it's pretty fucking obvious.

Exactly.

I for one would prefer to be a bit cautious now and be pleasantly surprised if it's not as bad as predicted than throw all caution to the wind and then end up in an absolute shitshow like early this year.

We barely even have any restrictions now. We have fewer restrictions now than most countries had all summer. I'm not sure why people are flapping as if being told to wear a mask in Tesco is such a hardship.

Starcup · 12/12/2021 00:33

Oh you think? Well let’s just fuck kids and the younger generation. Let’s just lock down for the next 4 years and let all the business’s go under, oh hang on……. Where will we get the taxes for to prop the NHS up if we let the economy go to shit….

It’s ok we’ll finance it from the the magic money clouds in the sky. We’ll also fund the MH crisis of the ready if the population with the same money clouds. Yeah Lockdown is only positive 🙄🙄🙄

Whattochoosenow · 12/12/2021 00:37

Many of the restrictions have become ingrained in people’s heads through fear. I’ve had a lunch cancelled this weekend because a friend doesn’t want 3 other people in their home. All adults fully vaccinated and boosted.

You don't get it, do you?

If the hospitals are overwhelmed, people will die. YOUR friends. YOUR family. Possibly even you. Nobody wants a lockdown. Nobody wants this shit. But unless you're happy to risk watching your loved ones die in front of you because there's nobody to help them, I'm not sure what you would suggest here.

Maybe they're seeing other households over xmas and don't want to risk a positive test ruining their plans? It's not all about you.

I can imagine. It’s crackers. It’s likely people are brainwashed. Totally understand if t rude elderly or vulnerable but the average say 40 years old….. now terrified after watching the news 🤯

We’ll be on this situation in 6 years time

Chachasha · 12/12/2021 00:51

We actually need our kids vaccinated or in safer learning environments.

We won't have the full clinical picture on Omicron until it's worked its way through the different stages of the illness in each section of the population.

We simply cannot afford the alternative, financially or in any other way.

@megustalacerveza

I get it I just don’t agree with it.

What do I think?????

Otherwise fit and healthy people carry on as normal, go to work pay taxes fund NHS. Spend money I’m bars pubs, restaurants etc…. Keep businesses in business so they can pay their taxes.

Vulnerable should shield for the own protection and the government should pay for this. The elderly, parents of vulnerable children, those undergoing cancer treatment etc…They shouldn’t have to worry about finances etc

That would be a start.

Nope didn’t suggest this. There is a whole world of nuance and varied mitigations between now and lockdown.

I don’t want a lockdown.

That’s why I’d rather act early with lighter measures to avoid a lockdown.

It’s the people who refuse lighter mitigations that keep landing us all in lockdown and i for one am sick of it.

We can wait but it’s going to be at least similar to delta, so what? Everyone locked seat again for months? Kids homeschooled?

It will speed regardless. It’s in the county, doubling every day or two. A full lockdown will contain in but not prevent it. It will just delay it. It’s the same old…..

You say you don’t want a lockdown but you do realise that’s what’s coming in January?

megustalacerveza · 12/12/2021 01:12

@Starcup Good God...delaying it is the entire bloody point!!! We're not trying to stop it, we're trying to buy time while people get boosted rather than the entire country catching it at once and everything grinding to a halt!
