Anyone had a new reaction to hair dye after having Covid or vaccine?

I know when hairdressers reopened after lockdown last year there were reports of a number of cases of people having reactions to dye and a possible link to them having had Covid.

I haven't had Covid (to the best of my knowledge) but recently had my booster jab (moderna). Two weeks post jab I wanted to dye my hair using the same boxed dye I've used for at least 5 years. I don't usually do a patch test (yes, I know the instructions tell us to do it every time) but on this occasion I did a test as someone had told me she'd had a reaction to perm lotion following her booster (although I think she had Pfizer) even though she'd been having her hair permed for years. Well it was fortunate that I did the test as the colourant blistered my skin and left a raw patch behind my ear.

So I was wondering if anyone else has had a reaction to dye after their jabs or if you had a reaction after Covid a while ago have you subsequently been able to dye with a different product or even done a much later patch test with your usual product which has been OK due to the lapse in time. Or am I now destined to embrace my grey hair??

I haven't personally but I've also heard there's potentially a correlation between covid and new reactions to hair dye. Most hair dye reactions are a reaction to PPD so you could look for PPD-free hair dyes and try with a patch test again.

You can also become allergic to anything at anytime though. I had a friend who randomly became very allergic to a food item after eating it their whole life. Allergies are a strange one.

Yes it happened to me after infection. I went to a proper hairdresser who said it was very common, and they were able to help me find a colour that worked...

Thank you for your replies - they give me hope that I might be able to use a different product. I have been researching different products but am going to leave it a few weeks before I test anything else in case it was my body still reacting to the vaccine which caused the issue.

Yep - and I hate to tell you OP - but it's got steadily worse and continued and we're now well past 6 months. I also have constant itching on my hands in particular and all over my body and joint pains - none of which have gone away.

bigbluebus · 10/12/2021 14:11

Oh no @CoffeeWithCheese. Is that after having Covid or the vaccines?

I had two Moderna vax - and used quite a few home dye semi permanent kits since then with no issues (Casting).
I've heard the permanent ones are more risky re getting adverse reactions due to the chemicals in them - but not sure if that's true.

Just had a Pfizer booster - so think I will do a 24 hour dye test next time, after what you say, thanks for heads up.

It happened to the lady sat next to me when I was at the hairdressers a few weeks ago. They were able to apply another colour to her head instead.

Good to hear there are possible alternative dyes to use.

Mine was after the jabs - I'm still reacting.

Did OP or anyone else find a suitable dye please? I too became allergic after 2 jabs and can't seem to isolate what it is. I've had perm and semi perm tried by my hairdresser, and am now getting so many greys 😢

CoffeeWithCheese · 05/10/2024 18:00

Only solution I found was to grow out my pixie cut which I had full-head bleached and then vivid colour on top to a bob where I could get foil highlights which I could then get coloured on top.

CoffeeWithCheese · 05/10/2024 18:00

Meant that the bleach wasn't touching the scalp so I didn't react.

Fransea · 06/10/2024 11:46

Yes, that's what I currently have my hairdresser do - only blonde foil highlights to avoid the scalp. There will become a point where I just have to go grey if there's nothing else I can use as it's not really going to be practical to colour my whole head this way! Thanks for replying
