Is it the Omicron variant?

My husband has had a message from NHS Result saying the 'make sure you and the people you live with isolate for 10 days' I have so far been testing negative so assumed we didn't need to do this. Is it an old message or could it be the new Omicron variant? (he does seem to have it mildly) but we have not been told this. We are trying to call to query this, but it's obviously very busy.

That's their standard message - I had the same when I tested positive last month, before Omicron was even known about. The default is basically 'isolate unless you are exempt' - with exempt being fully vaccinated or under 18 - so all their messages seem to be based on the default. The message from NHS tracing will say whether you have to isolate or not (after he's completed his close contact details)

I think with the new variant contacts have to isolate too. If I were you I would follow the advice they have given.
