Spreading like wildfire- schools

It's been pretty bad in London on and off.

But this is unprecedented on this scale- local schools which have had the odd cases here and there now seeing 8,10 children sometimes more getting it in a class. Multiple confirmed Ormicron case at local secondary and subsequently lateral flows coming back positive tonight. PCR results pending.

I know of full classes out, and two full year groups (Y3 & Y4) in two other schools .

Is it this bad anywhere else?

"Covid showed me people like their terms" Yeeeessss... because words convey meaning? It is indeed 'ripping' through my school - through the staff in particular. By choosing to use this word I am conveying how quickly and effectively Covid is impacting upon people.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/12/2021 21:49

@Malteser71

Still ripping and tearing?
When you've had a loved one or two taken suddenly by Covid, yes some people might say that Covid has 'ripped' through the community (or teared)

Having said that, my Mum had the unfortunate displeasure of getting Cancer a week after we locked down in March 2020. That was tough, I have to say. Either way, people have the right to say that it has ripped and teared through their community.

And yes, my mental health has utterly dived. As well as my physical health.

Hope you're ok.

Loads in DC school too, including DD.

However, no one (including adults) has been anything more than mildly unwell.

For this demographic, it is the isolation rules that are causing the problem, not the virus.

Daffodilsorry to hear this, and your DM's difficult news. I wish her well.

We lost two elderly family members to covid last year. We have ECV household. I totally support people describing their own experiences in their own words. It's important we can all express ourselves without criticism.

Expressions such as "spreading like wildfire" and "ripping through" are generally used of Covid only by lockdown fans.

It's like going back in time, and not in a good way.

Oh yes. We do love a good lockdown.

Huge fan of those. Massive. Humongous. Love 'em

Same here south of London.
My DS’s room at nursery closed this week as not enough staff.
Half teaching staff at my secondary school off. I’m trying to avoid going in next week as I’m 9 weeks pregnant and just don’t want to get it. Work in a behaviour school so pupils don’t test when asked and no one respects any sort of distancing / personal space.

Really think we should all stay off school next week 😭

iolaus · 09/12/2021 22:02

We barely had any in my son's school till 2-3 weeks ago - then all of a sudden 10 kids went off at once and tested positive, so they asked all of them to be tested - about 50% of the kids came back positive within a few days of each other

My son (who was negative) had 13 in in his class (2 of them had just come back from covid) - the rest were positive
The class below his had 12 in etc

There are 9 teachers in the school - 4 of them were positive

Up till then there had been about 3 cases in the school in total

Silverswirl · 09/12/2021 22:07

I’m very thankful that pretty much our entire primary school had it in sept / Oct. was stressful at the time but since November there are no cases at all!

Are these changing soon?

I thought I saw something about dropping close contacts to LFT

Tabbacus · 09/12/2021 22:07

Going by mumsnet its been spreading like wildfire since the start, surely all children have had it by now? In seriousness a virus being more transmissible but more mild (which appears likely to be the case with omicron) is good overall.

Drumshambo · 09/12/2021 22:08

School lockdown on the way,- probably not before Christmas but Definitely January! Our !oca! Primary Is down to 3 days a week!

martim · 09/12/2021 22:10

Going through my school, 1 year group has had 20 cases (so far) this week, another year group had 16 last week, but only 3 so far this week.
Fortunately children are having few symptoms.
Adults (parents and staff) are having what is classified as mild symptoms, but that is often 1-2 weeks in bed followed by another week or 2 to get back to normal

Very glad to hear reports of mild cases.

Let's hope this thing is on the way out next year.

Off to change my username to SpreadLikeWildFire.

Whereabouts are you?
sociallydistained · 09/12/2021 22:17

Currently I our school year 3 and 5 have homeschooling options advised because of the rates in those years.

martim · 09/12/2021 22:17

Yes, I was mainly in bed for 8 days when I got it (only had 3 sick days in past 4 years so I'm not someone who gets poorly). Another member of staff was off for 3 weeks and has been back mornings only for 2 weeks. A member of SLT is very poorly at the moment. I've had a few parents who have been really poorly as well. There are also quite a few adults who have felt rough for a couple of days. All of these are classified as mild, but mild can still be unpleasant.

No it isn't. There's currently a bill going into parliament to stop school closures as they've been catastrophic for vulnerable children.
Tabbacus · 09/12/2021 22:19

I wouldn't really class 2 weeks in bed as mild Confused Not that it matters, but there's a bit between actually mild and really poorly.

Just to balance this anecdata with my own, 1-2 weeks in bed is a major exaggeration. For almost everyone I know who has had it, including my clinically vulnerable self, it was feeling rough for a week, slobbing around a bit for the isolation period (no time in bed though, that’s ridiculous) then back to normal albeit very tired for a few days.
smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 09/12/2021 22:19

Theres been a big increase of cases in schools here several have closed year groups because they dont have enough staff. I feel like dc primary is just limping on until christmas.

Really? This would make my day

HereComesTheSun12 · 09/12/2021 22:22

Very low cases in our secondary school but then we had nearly a quarter of the school off at one point in September. Local primary schools seem to be suffering more. There were 11 in son's year 6 class this week and other classes have been similarly hit in the last few weeks.

HesterShaw1 · 09/12/2021 22:24

There is more encouraging news today about the mildness of Omicrom.
