Spreading like wildfire- schools

It's been pretty bad in London on and off.

But this is unprecedented on this scale- local schools which have had the odd cases here and there now seeing 8,10 children sometimes more getting it in a class. Multiple confirmed Ormicron case at local secondary and subsequently lateral flows coming back positive tonight. PCR results pending.

I know of full classes out, and two full year groups (Y3 & Y4) in two other schools .

Is it this bad anywhere else?

A quarter of my small rural local primary school had it within a few weeks of of the term starting. We had gone from 2-3 cases through the whole pandemic to tens of them at once.

We went back to bubble systems, and eventually cases dropped, I think 8 currently have it (we get a bulletin each Friday so could be more) school has about 230 pupils in total

vickyc90 · 09/12/2021 21:30

Do you not think it's because people are LF to see relatives so finding cases they previously wouldn't have known about. Everyone we know who is currently positive has been found through testing not symptoms

surreygirl1987 · 09/12/2021 21:31

It's ripping through my school in the south as well right now. I'm a teacher. Half my department have been wiped out with covid. It's currently hitting the staff worse than the kids actually - we have classes of children but no staff to actually teach them!

Delatron · 09/12/2021 21:32

Yes it goes through the school then settles.

We had this early November. Asked DS today how many in his class actually didn’t have Covid and he said 3..

All settled down now and hopefully that’s it for disruption. Most children were asymptomatic a few had mild cold symptoms.

Wrinklyeyes · 09/12/2021 21:34

We are in London. DCs at secondary. No year groups or classes out here. Last week the school had the lowest number of positive cases since this started.

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:34

@vickyc90 true. The more we test, more cases we see perspective.

There are a lot of other bugs about too. Loads, we have had our fair share last 3 weeks (been a nightmare) and actually we have tested more as a family because of this.

We are a ECV family so it's treacherous for us. But we are triple vaccinated. I will be glad when the school shuts the door for Xmas.

Thanks all.. it's interesting to see the highs and low's of rates being reported. It isn't purely local to us clearly

Still ripping and tearing?

I wish that was the case. A lot of kids and teachers have been really poorly with it.
Againstmachine · 09/12/2021 21:37

Covid showed me people like their terms, remember the NHS isn't struggling they are on their knees, terms like wildfire and ripping through.

Let's make everything dramatic.

ponkydonkey · 09/12/2021 21:37

@2toastornot2toast

Yes Oxfordshire. Schools are closing classes. Dd has 9 cases and awaiting results on others, rest of school the same
South here it's not too bad yet!!!
NeedAHoliday2021 · 09/12/2021 21:38

We were okay but just learned a parent got a dc a pcr test then sent dc to school while waiting for the results. It’s positive and they’d been in school 3 days so expecting a class outbreak.

ponkydonkey · 09/12/2021 21:39

Just like to add kids all have a snotty nose feel slightly rough and parents not getting anything 2 days max

So not too bad but all parents are double jabbed

SarahWoodWould · 09/12/2021 21:39

The past 2-3 weeks it has ripped through our rural school in the Cotswolds. We were closed for 10 days but kids are still testing positive now we’re back.

Iggly · 09/12/2021 21:39

How is it dramatic? It illustrates how bad things are for some people. Just because you don’t experience it directly, then there’s no need to dismiss the experience of others.
Niki14 · 09/12/2021 21:40

Its just swept through my DDs primary class and we had notifications of cases in other year groups but doesn't seem as bad (probably siblings). It swept throught the secondaries here very early on and then another wave in October. Now all my friends with primary age children are telling me of multiple positive cases in their schools and there seem to have been lots more cases being reported at nursery as well.

ponkydonkey · 09/12/2021 21:41

It also ripped through our primary late sept... so ok probs here

No one has died 😬

MissCrowley · 09/12/2021 21:41

North wales here. One class shit for 10 days whilst others were off scattered throughout. Out of around 120 pupils only 19 were in last week. Apparently this week is much better and more and more kids are coming back to school.

MissCrowley · 09/12/2021 21:41

Oh dear I meant shut not shit. Apologies.

yellowgreysocks · 09/12/2021 21:42

@Wowwellokthen

The 10 isolation for omicron has been changed to daily lateral flows.
I thought they changed it to every positive contact needs to test for 10 days but omicron contacts still need to isolate regardless of vaccination.
SweetPen · 09/12/2021 21:42

not really. Definition of to spread like wildfire: spread with great speed. It is indeed spreading with great speed. 10 cases in one day, in one class.

Well, wildfire sounds rather dramatic, think of the connotations Sad. 10 cases in one day is not indicative of the incidence rate.

ponkydonkey · 09/12/2021 21:44

Absolutely nothing at college btw
All 16- 18 who refused to get Vaccinated mine included 😬 nothing n that side

BunsyGirl · 09/12/2021 21:46

Six off in my DS’ class (year 7) in the week before half term. Three off the week after half term (including my DS). Nothing since.

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:47
Hmm

We haven't been on the receiving end of this level of cases previously and it's uncomfortable.

Some teaching staff are very poorly. Some families are on day 20 of isolating because multiple people in households have had it consecutively, and it's impacting on their lives in significant ways.

Not sure that's in anyway dramatic.
The 'oh you're being dramatic crowd are not going to get a rise from me.

I still stand by the fact for us, in our area and by the sounds of things many others too, it's growing exponentially. It might be mild, but we still know very little about long covid.
