Spreading like wildfire- schools

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:09

It's been pretty bad in London on and off.

But this is unprecedented on this scale- local schools which have had the odd cases here and there now seeing 8,10 children sometimes more getting it in a class. Multiple confirmed Ormicron case at local secondary and subsequently lateral flows coming back positive tonight. PCR results pending.

I know of full classes out, and two full year groups (Y3 & Y4) in two other schools .

Is it this bad anywhere else?

RoastPotatoQueen · 09/12/2021 21:10

Nope. Fine here. Are you sure your not noticing it more because of the fear being driven into people?

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:13

Fear is the threat of something.

This is multiple years out. Multiple classes out.

That's not fear that's fact.

Scale of this was not the same last year - and I say that as someone who's kids had to isolate and their school closed early. These are large scale cases of covid ripping through year groups.

Wowwellokthen · 09/12/2021 21:13

Bad here in Kent. Between 30-40% of KS2 kids positive last week.

2toastornot2toast · 09/12/2021 21:15

Yes Oxfordshire. Schools are closing classes. Dd has 9 cases and awaiting results on others, rest of school the same

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:16

@Wowwellokthen sorry to hear that. Also sounds very high.

Ormicron confirmed so they are saying close contacts need to isolate and the whole year is being asked to do so! Unclear if it's until neg PCR or for 10 days Z

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:17

@2toastornot2toast same sad news about rates, sorry to hear.

I almost hoped it was a local issue with rates, but clearly it's absolutely everywhere.

Yes we’ve had year groups close, though thankfully that’s stopped now. We had 10 days off school because no staff to cover, which wasn’t great but it’s still better than the almost whole term off last year because of lockdown. My expectations and hopes are pretty low. If we have odd bouts of 10 days off here and there, that’s one thing and I can cope with that.

Wowwellokthen · 09/12/2021 21:18

The 10 isolation for omicron has been changed to daily lateral flows.

Quartz2208 · 09/12/2021 21:19

That doesnt sound that much different though from a Delta outbreak. DS school got hit hard, one class had 3 left one day. Multiple year groups hit. Went through fast in around 3 weeks. Households affected

Now just the odd case here and there and pretty much everyone I know has had it now

KingofQueens · 09/12/2021 21:19

South East England here and we went through this just after half-term. 2/3 of class out at my son's secondary school and 1/2 in daughter's class st primary school. It's settled now, because they've all had it .

ToooOldForThis · 09/12/2021 21:19

I'm in Scotland, this was my school a couple of weeks ago. Most children back now, staff starting to go. A couple of smaller schools had to close.

SummerBluez · 09/12/2021 21:20

We had a rush in our secondary school, 60 out of 600 students were positive. However after two weeks of it being like this it has now settled down and we are getting 3/4 cases a day.

RozHuntleysStump · 09/12/2021 21:20

It’s torn through my son’s school. Hull.

SweetPen · 09/12/2021 21:21

Not here.

Spreading like wildfire- schools Sounds rather hyperbolic, as usual on this forum.

Anyways, Covid symptoms are very mild in most people around us, with no symptoms or just a mild headache and sore throat.

The colds and gastro bugs that everyone is suffering from ATM on the other hand are horrendous and are making people ever so sick.

GoodnightGrandma · 09/12/2021 21:22

No, there have been cases in school, but no classes or years all out.

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:22

Interesting that it might be we had lower rates previously and are getting hit bit harder now, possibly by more transmittable strain, hence the sudden uplift.

Seen it in secondary's last year, but not so bad in Primary's. We had odd cases and due to old rules they = isolation but it rarely translated into positive cases. Haven't recognised this many positive cases identified previously/

Hopefully daily LFs will prevent negative PCRs having to isolate for 10 days

Oh, this again. Everyone surprised that a virus is spreading. 🙄

Bobholll · 09/12/2021 21:24

We had a huge outbreak in October at ours. School did stay open but I think it was a bit chaotic behind the scenes bless them! But since then, it’s settled and not so many cases. Think we’ve got a bit of herd immunity 😂

Omicron does seem to be very contagious, so it’s no surprise. But it’ll be OK. The kids will be fine & Christmas coming up gives schools a break!

Iggly · 09/12/2021 21:25

@RoastPotatoQueen

Nope. Fine here. Are you sure your not noticing it more because of the fear being driven into people?
Hmm

OP we’ve had similar but it’s calmed down since Public Health have asked the school to introduce more stringent measures (PCR the whole class and children with positive cases in their household to get PCRs).

QueenJeanie · 09/12/2021 21:25

It ripped through my sons' school in September

Rates have been low since

I think it all depends where you live

We had hardly any cases before September this year

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:27

@SweetPen not really. Definition of to spread like wildfire: spread with great speed.

It is indeed spreading with great speed. 10 cases in one day, in one class.

It's certainly not meandering along in gently way!

OP posts:
bluetowers · 09/12/2021 21:27

Manchester is very bad. Constant stream of people getting it

thewhatsit · 09/12/2021 21:28

@Wowwellokthen

The 10 isolation for omicron has been changed to daily lateral flows.
They said that in the press conference but that doesn’t seem to be live on gov websites yet. Let’s hope it comes into force soon!
cherin · 09/12/2021 21:29

DS 6th form is not informing anyone so we don’t have any idea of cases, but the vast majority of his mates are double jabbed.
DS’s is in Y5 and we currently have 5 confirmed cases, perhaps 6 if he’s confirmed via pcr tomorrow, and it seems to be doing the round. Mostly in his class as far as I know, not in the other intake, for some reason (perhaps more had it with the july and September round). Undoubtedly in comparison to last year (until July) kids have 10x more opportunities to mix, not just in school….sport clubs, afternoon clubs, cinemas, bday parties, a lot of the activities that last year were not going on now are going on and contribute to the spread

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 21:30

@Iggly I do think daily LFs are helpful to try and catch early
