What are the chances of lockdown this Christmas?

I've been away this weekend (UK, but I've been distracted and not following the news).

I see there's been talk of Johnson announcing a "ban on Christmas" possibly, around the 17th - or not, depending on what happens with Omicron - is that about right?

I know we can't know yet what's going to happen, but what are people's feelings?

What do you think the restrictions, if any, are likely to be in England & Wales & in Scotland?
@rrhuth I'm no antivaccer but I'd absolutely want to protest loudly if future lockdowns were announced.

It's not simple though, as I appreciate gatherings of people are a major issue in a pandemic- so protests are not a straightforward option.
Would you riot though?

Actually smash windows and risk arrest?

Doubt it. The number of people willing to risk a criminal record for rioting is pretty low.

rrhuth · 07/12/2021 21:26

@VikingOnTheFridge

There might be some riots perhaps, but I think most people would just do as those of us who were non-compliant did last time. That is, quietly carry on regardless. I don't much fancy rioting, I'd rather just have family over for a meal when I fancy it and pop round to see a friend.
Yes this is much more likely.

I really can't see many doctors wasting their time smashing stuff up in the street and getting a criminal record.

MarshaBradyo · 07/12/2021 21:26

We don’t really riot as much here

Protests maybe

QueenofKattegat · 07/12/2021 21:26

Selfish entitled attitudes like this are the reason we were in such a mess and still are. "I'll do what I want regardless of anyone else or anything and no-one will stop me"

Aw, this almost makes me nostalgic for 2020. Selfish AND "it's people like you blah blah". Everytime someone says selfish, Santa shoots a baby reindeer.

Benjispruce5 · 07/12/2021 21:27

@Lockdownbear 3 weeks I think.

There's a lot more of it about these past couple of weeks. People who are still daft enough to think it would all go away if we just stuck to roolz.
rrhuth · 07/12/2021 21:30

According to this on poll tax riots: only 3,000 to 3,500 were actually rioting, there was a protest of 70,000 - so 5% were rioting. That is what I am thinking, you can get a protest going certainly but most people will not riot.

Otherwise this just won't go away.

It's so bizarre to me that people are still saying things like this.

It won't disappear if we're 'good' enough. It isnt going anywhere. Has this honestly not sunk in yet?

BoredZelda · 07/12/2021 21:54

It's not naive to acknowledge that society and education being shut down is akin to an abuser's charter.

It is naive to think it would factor in to any decision about closing schools, when the number of children being abused who are in school and it is missed, or who are frequently (or permanently) out of school and there are no checks or balances, has never been addressed despite the number of cases like this.

How naive to think otherwise

No, it is realistic. Must be lovely to think that prior to lockdown, children weren’t being abused.

BoredZelda · 07/12/2021 21:57

People who are still daft enough to think it would all go away if we just stuck to roolz.

But on balance, looking at the epidemiology of the virus, which is more likely to be correct? That if we put in place mitigations that everyone sticks to, the numbers will reduce and health services are less likely to be overwhelmed? Or if we completely ignore it and go on as if it doesn’t exist, we’ll just be living with it and everything will be fine?

HarrietteNightingale · 07/12/2021 22:00

How many? Realistically, given the UK's tendency towards rioting - how many do you think?

Do you remember what things were like in summer 2011?

This is a different point. You aren't arguing that the 'mess' ie covid was and is still here because of people not observing regulations. Even if the former option, which you evidently prefer, were actually possible, it's a different argument.
discoland · 07/12/2021 22:10

Last lockdown the primary schools didn’t ‘close’ they just excluded a minority of pupils who were then made to sit at home and see everyone else sat together in the classroom over zoom, at least that was the case in my town.

Spot on. I don't know how people still aren't understanding this Confused

Yes. I am asking how many you think will turn out? How many turned out in Bristol and London in 2011?

I also wonder if you want riots Confused

BoredZelda · 07/12/2021 22:13

@VikingOnTheFridge

I expressed no preference either way as for many reasons restrictions or not makes little difference to my life.

If you can’t see why the first part is exactly relevant, maybe the problem is with comprehension.

BoredZelda · 07/12/2021 22:15

19 pages and the OP still hasn’t returned to say where they heard this “talk”

Or anything else really,

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 07/12/2021 22:15

If you're daft enough to follow any type of lockdown rule after the government took the piss out of everyone by having their Christmas party while elderly people sat alone on Christmas Day and hundreds of thousands of food went to waste when hospitality was shut down again, more fool you.

They've made fools of everyone who followed the rules to a T.

How anyone can take them seriously anymore after that is beyond me.

And this is the most worrying aspect of this party story.

I didn't comply because I respected Johnson then - but it is going to undermine any calls for caution and that is only going to harm British people more potentially Angry

I agree @QueenofKattegat . I don't see my anti lockdown views as any more selfish than those who support lockdowns.

I'm thinking of the damage to lives and the extreme hardship that prolonged lockdowns caused. I live in Leicester and my community was locked down almost the entire time. I don't want to see this happen again. Why is that anymore selfish than a pro lockdown stance?

But where does it end? We've been saying 'just hang on a few more months' since March 2020. Vaccines were supposed to be our way out. Everyone who wanted a jab has had one. Many people have had boosters. Now it's 'wait a few months until the special Omicron booster is ready'. Then we'll get that one. Then there will be another variant.

Honestly, at what point are we going to realise we can't keep saying 'another few months'?

You didn't say it, but it's blatantly obvious. As for the rest, put your money where your mouth is and let's hear an explanation for why arguments about ongoing management in the future is relevant to a post about the issue of whether sticking to rules could've made covid not a problem by now.

No. I don't. But I think you're very naive if you think riots can't cause havoc.

godmum56 · 07/12/2021 22:22

@Skysblue

No, cos Boris wants his xmas party and he’s already had covid so isn’t bothered. Xmas will be normal.

It’ll probably be in late Jan or Feb for lockdown, once the hospitals are really struggling.

Such a shame Boris cancelled the order of the vaccine that works against the whole virus not just the spike, given we now have a virus with a very mutated spike. Slow handclap for Boris… 🤦‍♀️

have you got a link for that please? which vaccine got cancelled?
freckles20 · 07/12/2021 22:34

@megustalacerveza exactly, I totally agree.

I was entirely in support of the initial lockdowns. But now I have realised that this isn't going to go away on the way that we all hoped.

More lockdowns are not the answer.
