Taste and smell

How long did it take for your sense of taste and smell to come back after covid?

And also were they linked or entirely on their own schedule?! Grin I've got covid but the last 2 days I'm getting little tiny whiffs of food and coffee etc but just wondering if there's an average time of return and will I be able to taste my Xmas dinner properly?!

About a month for me and they're not as heightened as they used to be pre Covid (had it in August).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/12/2021 13:01

My smell returned first but most other people I've spoken to said taste returned first.

Bobholll · 05/12/2021 14:10

Smell is still 20% two months later. Taste is 80%.. could be worse I suppose!

KylieKoKo · 05/12/2021 14:14

Dp lost his on Thursday and he says it's already starting to come back. I think it varies a lot between people.

Sparkle275 · 05/12/2021 14:16

I was just going to post the same thing. I'm also interested to know this. I tested positive Wednesday on LF and positive PCR results Thursday. I can barely smell or taste anything, it's grim. I'm hoping and praying I can taste by Christmas lol. Hope your feeling ok x

Lost mine in August and I’m still waiting.

I sometimes smell really strong smells. We have these antibacterial wipes at work and if I open a new packet I get a waft of the smell.

And when I’m getting a dinner out of the oven which is particular ‘herby’ I’ll get a waft of that.

Is that taste as well? x

I’m on day 5 of covid and mine went yesterday so I’m also clinging onto hope that I can taste christmas food!! It’s miserable being stuck inside with very little do, the illness and anxiety of covid and not even being able to medicate with chocolate.

KylieKoKo · 06/12/2021 12:16

My sense of smell seems a bit dulled today but I still have some and I can taste strong flavours. Hopefully it will come back soon!

JovialNickname · 06/12/2021 12:23

I'd be interested to know too, my sense of smell has completely gone. I thought reading about it that anaemia was a kind of "bunged-up" ness like you have with a cold. Nope, just suddenly completely wiped out! Can't smell my super strong smelly candle, or even vicks vaporub (can feel the cold clearing sensation though). I'm lucky I can still taste things 80% but would be keen to know when it's coming back. Mostly because I worry I wouldn't know if I had bad breath or BO Grin

*anosmia, obvs

Sympathies to those of you who have lost taste as well. There's not much to cheer you up when you're sick if you can't taste or smell anything!
Hot chocolate - why bother
Scented candle - forget it
Chicken soup - basically just hot water with lumps in

Dilbertian · 06/12/2021 12:33

I'm trying to be optimistic about it. If I can't taste or smell all the delicious food, maybe I won't eat as much of it

orangepeelsz · 06/12/2021 21:03

Great to hear the variation of replies,

Today my smell is back a little bit more, I'd say yesterday it was about 5% and today 10%, still not great but going in the right direction. Taste is about 30/40% but that's better than nothing. I'm finding the taste is still active at the front of my tongue but further back there's nothing Confused so I'm trying to keep things near the front of my mouth to get some enjoyment of flavour GrinGrinGrin

My sense of taste and smell was diminished yesterday and the day before (though not completely gone) but has now come back completely (day 9).

You've given me hope Grin

Just in case anyone is wondering my smell is back on say 13 and taste is 80% back Grin

Thanks for updating. My dh lost his on Saturday (day 4 for him) and is quite down about potentially not enjoying his Christmas dinner. Hopeful it might be on the mend by then.
His brother had covid in late September and his taste and smell still patchy.

Arrowheart · 14/12/2021 06:39

I've been without mine for 10 days now and so miserable with it. I can't taste or smell anything and eating is joyless. Beginning to think it isn't coming back.
