Can you get a false positive LFT

Father in law tested positive and luckily everyone else in the house tested negitive.

He is off for a pcr today 😢

Could it be a false positive as we have all tested negitive.

Also of the PCR comes back negitive does that mean he dosent have it

Yes, unlikely but does happen.

A false negative is more likely.

Jeffjefftyjeff · 05/12/2021 08:16

False positives on lateral flow are comparatively rare (false negatives are more common)

Technically, yes, as a PCR cancels out the LFT result.

There has been several instances lately where LFT has been positive and PCR has been negative.

Official guidelines in all (most?) instances is that the PCR is correct.

However, very recently in the south east their were lab issues which meant thousands of people may have got the wrong PCR result.

I have no idea what the outcome of that is, whether everything is all fine now. No idea.

Some reports have suggested that LFTs are in fact accurate. However, officially PCRs are considered gold standard and trump LFTs.

Who knows Confused

How strong was the positive? Did he follow it up with a second test?
My partner had a faint second line appear quite a while after the test was done but follow up tests were negative.
My son had a positive yesterday and it was 2 blazing lines that appeared in seconds, I'm fully expecting his pcr to come back positive.

Rizzoli123 · 05/12/2021 08:38

Yes.

Line was strong. Not sure about a second test.

He has a pcr today which I think will be positive. Everyone else is hoping it will be negitive.

My step dad tested positive on 2 LFT with a cough last week, but neg on PCR. PCR trump's LF and he's carrying on as normal.

ConcernedAuntie · 05/12/2021 08:57

I have had three positive (albeit faint) LFTs. Three negative PCRs.

Have a friend who has been testing positive on LFTs and negative on PCRs for months.

Hope your FIL is ok.

My sister had 3 positive lfts and 2 negative pcrs. She was told to carry on as normal but she did stay away from family for 10 days just in case.

Vanillacupcake33 · 05/12/2021 09:13

My ds had 7 positive lft and 2 negative pcr. I kept him isolating anyway as my dd tested positive on pcr

TripleSeptic · 05/12/2021 10:03

My uncle had 2 positive lft, and 2 negative PCR in the same week. He was lf testing because we'd been in close contact and I had tested positive. He'd already decided what he was going to binge watch on Netflix and was very upset that the pcrs didn't qualify him for 10 days of telly.

Yes - there has been a few threads on here this week about how the FlowFlex lateral flow brand is causing a lot of false positives (later confirmed negative with PCR).
