Test to enter the UK

Hello, does anyone know if the new rules on having to take a pre departure test mean you have to take a PCR test or an antigen before you fly to the U.K.?

I’m due to fly to Spain in the next few days and need some clarity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

That’s my understanding from bbc news, yes.
I’m supposed to be going to Spain next month 🙄

TomAllenWife · 04/12/2021 18:33

It's only just been announced, no further details yet
We're flying into the uk tomorrow so watching with interest

Returnoftheowl · 04/12/2021 18:33

I'm watching with interest as I've just seen the braking news story on BBC news.

I'm supposed to be going to France next Monday. No idea how I'm supposed to organise a test in France?!

Sirzy · 04/12/2021 18:33

BBC news says lateral flow or pcr

Most pharmacies in France do them. Or when I travelled over a few months back I ordered one to take with me to do there which was easy
olivo · 04/12/2021 18:35

Yes, just watching now. Pcr or lateral flow, just like in the summer

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/12/2021 18:37

Is this instead of, or as well as the Day 2 test?

Sirzy · 04/12/2021 18:38

As well as

surabayajenny · 04/12/2021 18:38

Does anyone know what happens if you test positive prior to returning home? How long after a positive test do you have to wait before being allowed back into the UK?

@Returnoftheowl - try chronomics. They do a an antigen test that you can take with you and it only costs £18.99.

I’m going to order them right now because I fly in a few days.

We're going to France at xmas.

Currently have bought pre-departure 48 hour PCRs (assuming that by that point, LFTs won't be enough)
Post-travel 2 day PCRs.

So now we need to get an LFT to come back too?

Considering we're driving via the tunnel, staying in our own place and doing an outdoor activity while there, are double or triple vaxed and post infection, I'm not sure how our trip is any more risky than driving to stay anywhere in the UK.

PrpleRain · 04/12/2021 18:51

What exactly has changed? I’ve been abroad 4 times during the pandemic and each time I was required to show a negative test results before the flight..

They ditched that requirement earlier this year and have brought it back in.
WhatHaveIFound · 04/12/2021 18:53

Can't find out if this applies to returning from Ireland to the UK. Hopefully it'll be a bit clearer by the time DH travells at the end of the week.

Peaseblossum22 · 04/12/2021 19:04

There’s so much conflicting information out there , today it says on the ITV website that only U.K. residents can enter from a red list country but what about uK passport holders who are not residents. My brother may need to come and do the quarantine, he has a British passport but he’s not a resident . Does anyone know the definitive answer

Incognito22333 · 04/12/2021 19:11

Travel is all becoming a nightmare again - predeparture test, then some countries insisting on eg day x test there, then predeparture test to return, plus day x test on return. So 4 tests in a week and with going over Christmas and Christmas closures and testing delays, good luck.

For no reason. It's too late.

QuentininQuarantino · 04/12/2021 19:17

Anyone have any details on what ages this is required for?

Florelei · 04/12/2021 19:18

I agree it’s too late - the new variant is already here. Given that you have to be fully vaccinated to enter Spain and their cases are much lower than ours with masks worn indoors I cannot see how this will help.

I can literally go out clubbing, to pubs concerts and theatre but if I get on a plane I have to take two covid tests and quarantine? What is going on? I don’t understand it.

I had a breakdown earlier in the year and desperately need a quiet week in the sun. This has knocked me sideways.

Not yet. Un summer was for over 12s I think
EasterIssland · 04/12/2021 19:27

If in transit did people used to take it in summer ?

Presumably 10 days? You would have to test negative before traveling though, so it could be longer.

From UK Gov website

.“ If you have been in a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you will only be allowed to enter the UK if you either:
are a British or Irish National
have residence rights in the UK”
