What is a close contact for omicron?

I’m due to go for a meal with a team from work (will be quite a small team) but will be in the city centre so restaurant likely to be busy. If someone in the restaurant tests positive for omicron would I then have to isolate for 10 days? That’s what’s putting me off going so near to Christmas - not afraid of the virus itself really as double vaccinated and about to get booster.

If you just went in there they couldn't as they would have no idea who was in there as they would have no details but I don't know what happens if they know your details because of a table booking.

Yes, as a close contact you would have to isolate for 10 days. I think it’s going to put a lot of people off going out in the next couple of weeks, unfortunately.

How would they know you were there?

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair

How would they know you were there?
It depends where you live but in scotland everywhere is still taking your details on entry.

That’s what i suspected - it’s so hard to decide. As far as I know - I would be the only one bailing but have so much to do before Christmas I just can’t afford to have to isolate.

The case numbers are still very small, so the chance of this happening is low.
Because the case numbers are low they are still tracing everyone, so that means contacting whoever has made the restaurant booking or paid for the food by card and getting everyone's details.
In my local primary school they did a mass testing of children for this new variant.

Invisimamma · 04/12/2021 13:41

As far as I know I wouldn't be the whole restaurant, only anyone you've been closer than 2m, for more than 15 minutes, without a mask. With those caveats, it would likely only be anyone in your party.

Everywhere in Scotland is still collecting track and trace data but not sure about the rest of the UK.

julieca · 04/12/2021 13:44

I dont know if that is true?
In Norway in a restaurant amongst 120 people, nearly 90 now have the new variant.

ceeveebee · 04/12/2021 13:54

In England, restaurants are not taking everyone’s contact details, so you would only be identified as a close contact if the person who tested positive gives your name to test & trace, or if you have the nhs app with contact tracing switched on.

julieca · 04/12/2021 13:55

The new variant though is being aggressively traced. So they would ask the restaurant about bookings.
This will change as cases rise and track and trace cant do this any longer.
