Although nobody has actually told me personally - I only know because my contacts (including DH and DC) have been contacted by T&T and told.

Took test on Tuesday, positive result on Wednesday, T&T follow up today.

I have ruined a lot of people’s plans Sad

@Melliphant

The bmj review doesn't show a 53% reduction, and didn't the Guardian publish a correction?

fullfact.org/health/mask-wearing-study-edinburgh-guardian/

This isn’t what the study says. The study says that mask-wearing was "associated" with a reduction in risk, but that, due to the limitations of the research, “it was difficult for our review to draw a one directional or causal conclusion.”

ie people who wear masks behave differently from people who don't. The best evidence is from Scotland and Wales who had a mask mandate while England didn't (which seemed to have a worse outcome), and neighbouring states in the US, again with a worse outcome.

It's a bit of cloth over your face - generally dirty, badly worn and entirely ineffective. It's covid theatre.

Bleurgh, anti-maskers telling on themselves again - why are masks always dirty in your world? Don't you keep yourselves clean?
CherryBlossomAutumn · 05/12/2021 01:15

On FFP2 masks there is good data, hospital Covid wards where everyone wears an FFP2 almost no health workers get Covid, there are some good real life studies on this (Cambridge hospital being one of them).

With omicron, it is very transmissible so very well fitted masks, ideally FFP2 would make a massive difference if the majority wore them in any indoor spaces.

Grabbobabbo · 05/12/2021 01:23

FFP2 masks are pretty pricy so I should imagine that's probably a barrier.

CherryBlossomAutumn · 05/12/2021 02:05

Yes but not as pricey as getting Covid and passing it on.

Also, it’s OK to reuse them a few times too apparently. Just keep them carefully after using. For hospitals obviously you need to discard after one use. But not as critical for us in trains or wherever to be quite so strict. So I got some that work out as £3 each, and I wear them on 3 - 5 occasions. Might be stretching it a bit but that’s not bad wear for wear.

I don’t really ‘like’ them though to be honest, I look like a duck! But, I just have to get used to it and breathing is totally fine.

Grabbobabbo · 05/12/2021 02:09

Sure CherryBlossom but some people literally won't be able to afford them even if they want to buy them.

They make a huge difference. IMO the government should be giving them out to those on low incomes.

CherryBlossomAutumn · 05/12/2021 02:19

True the government could but it’s not that bad price wise when it’s our health. If you can afford the train you can afford a mask!

Dibbydoos · 05/12/2021 02:36

OP get well soon - sadly train travel, no social space let alone distancing and virtually no mask wearing was also my exp when I went to London for work... it actually ticked me off like intelligent people need to be told yo wear a mask in an enclosed space ffs! They presumably have forgotten that a person within 2m of them spits at them everything they breath, Confused.

We don't know enough about this variant but it's even more stealth than the other variants so vaccines may not give us as much protection. Really hoping it's a milder infection though.

Furries · 05/12/2021 02:45

@Badunkadunk

It’s a virus, did we ever wonder who gave us the cold or flu before? No we didn’t. If everyone would stop testing we’d be out of this mess in a few weeks.
WTAF?! Seriously, you need to get in touch with the powers that be/experts - by Jove, I think you’ve found the solution to the current global issue.
SawdustandHay · 05/12/2021 07:09

Just think at least 5,264,413 avoidable deaths all caused by swab tests! If only they’d known.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/12/2021 07:59

@CherryBlossomAutumn

Not necessarily, if they have to get the train to work that's not exactly a choice and it might eat up all their income.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/12/2021 08:01

I went on a train yesterday and it was rammed, as in all the seats taken, everyone standing shoulder to shoulder. Most were wearing masks but I don't think a cloth mask would stop a Covid spread in that scenario.

Userevermore · 05/12/2021 08:09

I don't use trains but DS was telling me about the train he often catches from Leeds to Manchester and it's absolutely rammed, it sounded like the London tube at rush hour, many can't avoid public transport, DS doesn't have a car as he lives in the city centre and it would be very difficult to park if he had one.

Goshitstricky · 05/12/2021 08:17

I imagine lots of cases are coming from trains.
Every single train from Southampton to London Victoria that I've taken in the last few weeks (for hospital appointments with CV DS) have had one cancelled and then 2 x the commuters piling into the next one, no seats, the standing people packed tightly together, 50/50 mask wearing.

It's not your fault, I hope you're ok.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 05/12/2021 08:17

@Watapalava

I'll be another new variant next week! We are on what about our 4th? 5th?

Its expected to be the new dominant one anyway in the next month - covids going nowhere.

Especially with people like you, you're always posting about ignoring it, doing as you please, people being pathetic who stay home etc.
Userevermore · 05/12/2021 08:20

I think those of us that probably use trains very occasionally and off peak don't realise how busy they can be.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 05/12/2021 08:29

@Watapalava

god some people are so ridiculously naive! 1/3 - 1/4 are ASYMPTOMATIC - you're flogging a dead horse!
It's not the dead horse that needs flogging...

... better sti your less like to catch the virus or any flu cvid virus if your immune system is strong. but if yiu do cintract it at least the vitamins can assist the body in swiftly eliminating it

Oh yes, it's the testing making people Ill/die. FFS
Cookerhood · 05/12/2021 09:03

That's interesting @xaint, do you have a reference for that?

Cookerhood · 05/12/2021 09:46

Because someone really needs to let the scientists & doctor's know.

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 05/12/2021 09:57

Maybe have some more jabs?

Olliesocks · 05/12/2021 11:21

@xaint

take vitamin c 5000mg per day, morning and evening zinc and vitamin D3. it will clear your body in 5 days
Most people are over the worst after 5 days regardless of their vitamin status.
catgirl1976 · 05/12/2021 12:56

@xaint. I had Covid quite badly recently. Afterwards I had some blood tests and my iron and vit d were on the floor which could either have been caused by the Covid or were like that to start with which made me have more severe symptoms. I’m on supplements now and they are making a huge difference so I would second this for people. Can’t do any harm and the GP said Covid really messes up your levels which leaves you very drained and less able to fight it off

catgirl1976 · 05/12/2021 12:58

Not saying it will magically cure you in five days but don’t think it can hurt to make sure your immune system is as good as it can be (am triple jabbed now but will carry on taking vitamins as they have helped my energy levels)
