Maybe Barry is your new year shag?

Op I feel for you

RubyTuesday70 · 02/12/2021 12:25

I'm still going ahead with my work do. Only half are "brave" enough to leave the house anyway, so those of us that are going will have a blast.

I feel so sorry for all the bars and restaurants that this pathetic excuse of a Government is trying to close.

julieca · 02/12/2021 12:25

Yes its sad. I too have had things cancelled. I was told insurance wouldn't cover a carol concert with the new variant and that is why they had to cancel.
I suspect more things will be cancelled over the next week.

AryaStarkWolf · 02/12/2021 12:27

Surely your employer can't tell you not to go out over your own holidays? (not talking about the meal here obviously which is work organised)

starfishmummy · 02/12/2021 12:29

I guess it depends on the employer, but a Christmas meal in what would be work time and/or paid for by the company them thats their choice.

Being told not to socialise with my colleagues in my own time...well even though I probably wouldn't, I would be incensed at my employer telling me I could t

theleafandnotthetree · 02/12/2021 12:29

I made a decision a few weeks ago that I would follow any legal directives but that I am no longer imposing limits on myself and am going to live life as fully as possible. Unfortunately, that relies on other people taking the same approach and they increasingly aren't here in Ireland. So I have had multiple things cancelled also which could in theory have gone ahead but X proportion of people pull out and then other people do too, in many cases because they don't want to be seen as 'reckless' or unsupportive and not necessarily because they don't want to go themselves. It's shit OP, I'm a single parent too and have spent far, far too many evenings on my own on my couch. All the joy seems to be sucked out of life and all plans are provisional so we can't even get excited about the few things which do go ahead..

CafeCremeMerci · 02/12/2021 12:31

@DartmoorChef

I feel your pain. After a crap year and looking forward to a busy December I'm now getting job after job cancelled and am worrying about how I'm going to pay my bills this month. Its shit.

This virus isn't going away and the vast majority of the country are vaccinated so I really do not understand why there is mass hysteria and panic yet again.

There isn't mass hysteria & panic!

People are just choosing to put the family Christmas/heath/job ahead of a party with colleagues.

I'm sorry it affects your income. Didn't you say you were doing delivery meals during lockdown? I'm sure plenty would appreciate good quality Christmas meals being delivered.

OnGoldenPond · 02/12/2021 12:31

We have had our usual big faculty party cancelled and replaced by yet another boring online quiz Sad. Disappointed as have heard it was usually a really swanky do and I have met hardly any colleagues so far.

We have organised our own department lunch and I will be very depressed if we get ordered to cancel that.

It's all going to be very damaging to general mental health if we self cancel Christmas again. Just virtue signalling by the large organisations and so unnecessary.

DraigFach · 02/12/2021 12:33

Our end of year meeting well meeting room with chatty colleagues and lots of lovely food has just been cancelled.

I'm relieved that the only 'company' affected is our internal catering team and not some poor sod trying to keep a restaurant/pub going with all this going on.

Whilst I'd like to meet some colleagues face to face for the first time and catch up with long standing ones, I'm a little relieved that I don't have to risk additional exposure in the run up to Christmas. I've got enough on my plate without adding covid to it.

dottiedodah · 02/12/2021 12:33

Surely they cant actually stop you from meeting up though? It really is shit at Christmas isnt it .Unless you dont go out at all there is still a transmission risk from meeting with friends and family /going shopping and so on .

TokyoSushi · 02/12/2021 12:34

I have a feeling ours will end up the same way although it's just a small lunch on 17th. I think the reasoning behind it is that companies don't want to be responsible for being the place that people caught it and therefore ruining people's Christmases. It sucks though. Any 'friends' events that I have are definitely going ahead!

Oblomov21 · 02/12/2021 12:36

Isn't it sad and a shame that we are in this situation yet again, for another year, that we even have to consider postponing our works Christmas parties. Covid. Sad

fournonblondes · 02/12/2021 12:37

But Boris Johnson and chums will have theirs.

Well they did not ask for people to cancel. Or brought the virus here 🙄

CaMePlaitPas · 02/12/2021 12:43

Sorry to hear about your cancelled Christmas smell Barry. Very sad.

Cariah · 02/12/2021 12:48

If you’re exposed to Covid now, you could test positive up to the 16th (14 days time), which means you’d be isolating over Xmas. Or a contact could test positive and if they have Omicron you’d still have to isolate over Xmas. It’s not surprising that people want to limit their exposure.

ZoBo123 · 02/12/2021 12:48

@Pyewackect

I work in an ICU Covid Red Zone and we're going ahead with ours - in fact we are intent in getting completly off our tits. We will raise a glass to the two dear friends and colleagues we lost to Covid ( both in their 30's with small children ) .
Hope you have a great time. Let's put things into perspective and support businesses that are in their knees and people who have given their all through this
HopeHappy · 02/12/2021 12:51

@SpookyScarySkeletons

I know it's so bloody frustrating isn't it! Ours is next Thursday and I'm praying they don't cancel as I've bought a lovely dress for it and it will be the first time I have met my colleagues in person!

I can't see why they can't just insist on LFTs on the day?? Although I have just had covid and have lots of lovely antibodies so I'm not too worried at the moment.

We've had a meeting where this was mentioned just this morning. LFTs on the day seems a reasonable compromise to us at the moment, along with the option of letting people back out if they're not comfortable coming.

I feel for the restaurants just getting back on their feet and now finding themselves not knowing how much food and drink they should order.

JustFrustrated · 02/12/2021 12:51

Full sympathy OP.

I'm really worried our place will ban our last team meeting before Christmas.

Normally, it moving to Teams wouldn't bother me too much. But this our final ever one as a team, after 5 years together we're being split up due to redundancy and I really want to say good bye to them all, and do the silly awards ceremony I've planned. It doesn't work the same over teams.

And it's not like we can "just get together" cause we're all over the country.

So, commiserations .

RhondaZ · 02/12/2021 12:51

@november90

oh my goodness my typos in that message 😂 thank you for making heads and tails fo it! i have cold hands and i'm annoyed 🙈
Thank you for making me laugh though.

It is rubbish and annoying.

reluctantbrit · 02/12/2021 12:52

Ours is next Thursday, we asked for LFT to be done on the day, 38 people in the office and we have a caterer bringing in the food. Around 2/3 of the people are in the office on a regular basis anyway so it doesn't make a huge difference if they stay for some drinks and food.

We decided against an external venue as people felt not comfortable back in October.

Hoppinggreen · 02/12/2021 12:55

@ravenmum

Commiserations! My bf is having his second birthday during a lockdown on Saturday. We're in a part of Germany where he's not even allowed to drink Glühwein outdoors in the rain to celebrate his birthday. The Christmas market was cancelled and no outdoor alcohol consumption is allowed. Everything else closed. I've got him a video to watch, yeay. But maybe you could do something outdoors with your workmates, in the UK?
Really unfair your 2 year old can’t drink Gluhwein Bloody puritanical Germans
Justcallmebebes · 02/12/2021 12:59

My work had already announced no Christmas do this year which I can live with. However, if they cancel panto I will be livid 😢

ravenmum · 02/12/2021 13:02

@Hoppinggreen Now also realise it sounds like I've got him a Peppa Pig video 😂

julieca · 02/12/2021 13:02

This is what happened before the first lockdown. In the few weeks before the 23rd of March, events were being cancelled and those that did happen had far less people going to them. The only place that was busy was supermarkets full of people buying toilet rolls.
