Would you go to a gig this Friday?

Me and DH have tickets to see a very popular and loud band tomorrow night.

The audience will be young people jumping around singing (they have anthemy songs that people will definitely shout), it’ll be boozy and it’s a sold out venue.

I don’t want to go but my DH says that Im being silly and he’s definitely going, he’ll just go with a friend if I want to stay in.
Normally I don’t mind him going to gigs without me but I can’t help but feel that his decision to go doesn’t just affect him.

I run a business so if he catches covid and I have to isolate it’ll be awful.
Also I just don’t want covid.

We’re both double jabbed.

I know if I put my foot down he wouldn’t go but it feels a bit controlling. He’s an adult.

AIBU?

I agree with you OP. DH is going to a gig on Saturday night. I'd rather he didn't (I was never going it's with 'the lads') but it's within the rules and we're both vaccinated (me thrice!).

We've also got two young children at school and nursery so to be fair it's as likely to come from one of them as a gig.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/12/2021 12:18

No I wouldn't. I know someone who has just recovered from getting covid at a funeral- wasn't a relation, there was no hugging or hand shaking. Gig? Not a bloody chance!

PrivateHall · 02/12/2021 12:20

When do you think you would be happy to go? We really do need to get on with our lives. I would definitely go. However, if you don't want to, that's ok too. It is extremely unlikely that you will end up having to isolate on the back of this given the current rules.

ParkheadParadise · 02/12/2021 12:21

Yes, I would go before you know it ALL gigs will be cancelled again🙁

I'm going to 3 Christmas nights out next week in the city centre I can't bloody wait 💃💃🥂🥂.

HailAdrian · 02/12/2021 12:22

Hell yea, I'm meant to be going to one in two weeks at Wembley and I'm terrified it'll be cancelled!

middleager · 02/12/2021 12:26

Yes.

MoonbeamSprinkles · 02/12/2021 12:26

We’ve been to about 6 gigs since the rules changed.
My husband goes to even more.

I wouldn’t have thought twice about it a fortnight ago.

It’s also a band weve seen before.

ThatsNotMyPinkUnicorn · 02/12/2021 12:27

Yes. I’m not sure what the point of the vaccination is.

BHX3000 · 02/12/2021 12:27

I’d go but everyone would have to be masked and vaccinated where I live, so it’s less of a risk.

How is your local incidence compared to the previous gigs you went to? That’s what I’d base my decision on.

middleager · 02/12/2021 12:28

We went to so many gigs when we could. Then I got Covid anyway from my child at school!
Enjoy, because I expect these will be outlawed soon.

madisonbridges · 02/12/2021 12:30

New strain isn't prevalent yet so it's better to go now than later. What's the point of everyone being vaccinated and boostered if we still can't do anything?

Sprostongreen21 · 02/12/2021 12:30

Yup.
I’m going to one next Saturday. The venue company was already asking for covid passes ( test or vax) I’ve been to my first post covid gig recently and loved it. Love live music. I’ve friends that have been to loads of gigs in Manchester recently and not had any covid scares.

Should note I work on a ward with some covid exposure throughout. Triple vaccinated. Lateral flow regularly, wear masks and take care where I can. I’ve accepted some things we do are a potential risk of catching it ( I’ve still not yet): meals out, meeting friends, gigs, cinema etc. But after nearly two years of this I need some fun as work is bloody full on all the time and there needs to be a balance.

Just hope it’s not cancelled!

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2021 12:34

This week? Probably yes.
In a month's time? Probably not.

I still think levels of Omicron are low in the UK. Its still going to take a while to spread widely.

Your chances of catching omicron at a gig this Friday are still low imho. But thats going to change in the next few weeks. I think overall, my mindset would be to go and enjoy if you have tickets. But be mindful of how this is changing rapidly and how the same choice in a few weeks is going to look more and more unwise.

Go. You may not get the opportunity again for a while.

redtshirt50 · 02/12/2021 12:34

I would go

SlipperyLizard · 02/12/2021 12:38

We’re off to see the Charlatans on Saturday. When I booked the tickets I thought there was only a small chance it would go ahead, now I think it is just in time before everything gets cancelled!

I have two DCs at two different schools, so I’m as likely to get it from them. I had covid this time last year, and am double vaxxed, so I’m happy to take the risk.

Rollergirl11 · 02/12/2021 12:39

Yes I’d go! I took DD (15) to see Sam Fender at Ally Pally the weekend before last. It was rammed full of youngsters jumping about. DD had the most amazing time and it was so totally worth it. Packed tubes coming home too. Neither of us came down with Covid.

Rollergirl11 · 02/12/2021 12:42

Just out of interest who are you going to see?

MoonbeamSprinkles · 02/12/2021 12:49

The libertines.

I’ve already been to 6 gigs since the rules relaxed and have been fine at them all.

I’ve definitely been in the ‘now I’m vaccinated I’m going to live my life’ camp up to now, but I’m just worried we don’t know enough about this variant.

I think I’d feel different if it was was a more subdued band, or if we were seated or outdoor, but I think there’ll be lots of shouting and jumping about. It’s Newcastle Carling Academy so zero ventilation.

I wouldn’t go this close to Christmas. If you catch Covid your family Christmas is fucked.

julieca · 02/12/2021 13:29

I would worry about getting infected just before Christmas

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/12/2021 13:33

Go

ILookAtTheFloor · 02/12/2021 13:39

I went to a gig on 30th Oct. Pressed in like sardines, singing at the top of my lungs- it was sweaty, it was AMAZING and I'd do again tomorrow if I could.

Didn't catch anything there.

It was Biffy Clyro.

MsRinky · 02/12/2021 13:43

It's such a tricky one. I've been going to festivals and gigs since they restarted, but am getting cold feet as we get nearer to Christmas. My DH is going to one tonight (not a band I particularly like) and I'm OK with him going, although I don't want to go myself (there are spare tickets going as others have dropped out).

Due to go to two tiny sweaty backroom of a pub gigs next weekend, but now it feels like it's just getting too close to Christmas and that it's too big a risk that I won't be able to go see my family (again).

Boris "let the bodies pile high" Johnson has made it abundantly clear that he won't do anything until it's way too late, so all the onus is on individuals.

PrincessNutNuts · 02/12/2021 13:53

Can your DP sleep in the spare room for a few days afterwards so if the risk he's taking bites him on the bum it doesn't disrupt your livelihood?

Personally, I wouldn't mess with my work responsibilities, our family's means of financial support, or our family's Christmas by going to a gig right now.

In normal times I work near a small venue and see loads of up and coming bands after work, but it's not normal times is it?

Spotify Wrapped is my favourite day of the year, and music is a big part of my life, but I can't imagine explaining to my boss that I'm unable to work, so important things I'm responsible for aren't going to get finished on time because I caught covid by putting myself in the kind of loud crowded situation where you would count yourself lucky if you didn't catch covid - just after they announced a new variant we don't understand yet.

Oblomov21 · 02/12/2021 14:12

I'd go. I don't quite understand your change of heart. Why have you changed your view on things?
