Negative Lateral Flow Positive PCR

reallysaying · 01/12/2021 11:39

Has anyone had a negative lateral flow but a positive PCR.

My OH tested positive, but had a positive lateral flow first.

My lateral flows have all been negative, but I have been told to get a PCR.

Just wondering what my chances are.

Yes, loads of posts here, that’s one of the reasons to get PCR tests done if you have been a close contact or have symptoms as these are more reliable.

Gregsprinkles · 01/12/2021 12:06

I think it's fairly common? We had the opposite, positive lat flows and negative PCR!

spiderlight · 01/12/2021 12:40

Yes - teen DS had negative LFTs but a positive PCR, and his cousin, plus her mum and a large group of her friends all had the same - it went round cousin's singing group, with mild symptoms, but only one of the eight had a positive LFT.

You follow the pcr not the lateral flow I was told so yep you have to isolate now.

What did you put that down to?
DistrictCommissioner · 01/12/2021 12:44

Yep I took my DC for a PCR as a close contact, which came back positive, but it took another 3 days until she registers a positive LFT (just testing out of interest).

CalmDownBoris72 · 01/12/2021 13:02

My husband had a negative LFT just before leaving he house for a PCR test...... it was a positive PCR.

He did become symptomatic a few days later and once that happened his LFT were positive.

Charliealphatangorara · 01/12/2021 13:05

Yes it happens all the time.

PurpleDaisies · 01/12/2021 13:05

Have you really not heard of this before?

CointreauVersial · 01/12/2021 13:14

LFTs just aren't as sensitive. Nice and cheap for broad screening, but won't always pick up low viral loads.

massistar · 01/12/2021 13:19

Yes, my daughter had negative LFTS all through her 10 day isolation after her positive PCR. She had no symptoms at all but did the PCR as she'd been in close contact with 3 friends who'd all tested positive. I'm guessing as her symptoms were non-existent that she had a very low viral load, hence the negative LFTs.

emmathedilemma · 01/12/2021 13:20

I know a couple of people who had negative LTF and positive PCRs. Neither had any symptoms and they only found out because one of them was planning to travel and needed the PCR before going.

Pinkflipflop85 · 01/12/2021 13:27

Yes. 10 members of staff at our school have recently had negative lft and positive PCR.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/12/2021 14:37

Yes, both myself and DS had negative LFTs followed by positive PCRs. It's common.

Coviddy · 01/12/2021 14:40

Yes. Did lat flows, all neg. PCR was positive. Out of interest I did a lat flow again, still neg. Day after that my lat flow showed positive

LegoLady95 · 01/12/2021 14:43

I've also had the opposite. Positive LFT's, five in total over a 10 day period but negative PCR.

CornishYarg · 01/12/2021 14:45

Yes, I had a negative LFT then tested positive on a PCR later that day

FreeBritnee · 01/12/2021 14:45

Has anyone got any idea what would cause a line outside the time frame on an LFT multiple times yet two PCRs say negative?

Vics313 · 30/12/2021 11:19

I’ve just tested positive on a PCR test and feel poorly but all my lateral flow tests including todays are negative !
