Spain effectively banning UK children from entering country

Anyone planning a Christmas holiday to Spain or the Canaries? You might have to rethink your plans. News broke overnight that Spain is only allowing fully vaccinated – ie, double jabbed – travellers from the UK and NI to enter the country, meaning anyone over 12 won't get in because they're only allowed one jab as things stand.

Something similar is probably going to happen with other countries soon so it wont just be Spain and will eventually affect the under 12s too.

IT IS ALREADY THE CASE IN OTHER COUNTRIES
Sorry fir shouting.. But you have to have a covid pass fir all people over 12yo in France. That’s to take the bus/train, go to the restaurant, use ski lifts etc etc
It has been the case since the end of the summer and basically stops anyone with a child between 12 and 16yo to go to France. Well unless you go and see family and aren’t planning g to do anything at all.

Tabbydancer · 28/11/2021 13:31

And Italy over the summer
And US now (specifically NY where we have family)
I couldn’t work out why people didn’t make an fuss over the summer. Maybe if Greece follows suit and Greece and Spain hit people will start being noisier and force the hand of our people pleasing government

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 28/11/2021 13:31

@applesarethebaneofmylife How did you organise a covid jab in Ireland? My DC have Irish passports.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 28/11/2021 13:33

Some here @TomAllenWife supposed to be leaving in 10 days for our holiday moved from last Xmas 😭😭

DontGiveAFlyingFig · 28/11/2021 13:38

We have a Canaries holiday booked, looks like that will be cancelled/postponed as youngest DC can't be vaccinated yet as they've just had Covid.

At this rate our next family holiday will be in 2030 and include grandchildren!

SageRosemary · 28/11/2021 13:46

@PAFMO

Maybe take it up with the only govt in Europe that didn't think vaccinating teenagers mattered.
This. Lobby your MP for change.
Butchyrestingface · 28/11/2021 13:52

@MrsLargeEmbodied

Nah, under 12s can still get in. I'm imagining screaming toddlers running all over the place now... 😱
toomuchlaundry · 28/11/2021 13:52

I wonder when they will change it for over 5s once countries start vaccinating them

bergam · 28/11/2021 13:53

Spain does not rely on British tourists at all, that is a myth propagated by the entitlement and exceptionalism of many British people. The days of the heavily tattood badly behaved drunken cohort in certain resorts is fast receding and totally welcomed now.

The British are being substituted by Scandinavians and other Europeans who are holidaying there and buying property in their droves. They are much more civilised visitors in many ways and can afford to spend a lot of money while in Spain.

If anything, Spain is trying to diversify its economy away from a reliance on cheap tourism and build up other aspects. Not relying on tourism is a policy decision.

I wonder how easy it is for non UK tourists to visit UK now? I think vaccination and/or a PCR test after two days is required. Meaning that if positive quarantine is required and the holiday is ruined. It is not an easy decision to make anymore to just travel on a whim. All over the world entry restrictions of one sort or another apply.

Phoned up and checked it was possible beforehand. Just took a cheap flight to Dublin, and went along to a drop in vaccination centre. You need an address but a hotel or AirBnB address is fine. You don’t need to be Irish or a resident.

Rocaille · 28/11/2021 13:56

Stop moaning. Spain is for Spanish people, not British holiday makers.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 28/11/2021 13:56

We had to take proof of his first vaccine but the little blue card was fine for that.

Yes, but technically you can have a "Pass sanitaire" without being vaccinated, by showing a recent negative test. Was 72 hours , but the government are changing this now to 24 hours (and they won't be free anymore)
Cakecrumbsinmybra · 28/11/2021 14:04

@ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife thank you. Did you just call one of the vaccination centres?

Awalkintime · 28/11/2021 14:11

All those without children are browsing sky scanner as we speak!

BungleandGeorge · 28/11/2021 14:14

Bad news, you’ll still have all the kids 0-12
Awalkintime · 28/11/2021 14:16

True but then those with both at least won't be there.

zafferana · 28/11/2021 14:19

I've just emailed Sajid Javid on this issue and I advise anyone and everyone with DC aged 12-15 to do the same. Alternatively, you could email your MP, if you think it will help. Mine is a leftie who constantly bangs on about restrictions and mask wearing and presumably doesn't give a crap about people's holidays, which is why I chose to email SJ instead. It's so unfair that DC aged 12-15 and their families are constantly disregarded Angry

Yes, just for peace of mind before booking the flights, but there was no need. They didn’t offer appointments just told us to turn up.

Some information here :

Thadhiya · 28/11/2021 14:29

@Flyonawalk

Presumably this will change when Spain analyse the devastating effect on their tourist industry.
I love how dim 'I'm not a racist but' sorts think the entire nation of Spain will collapse if some Brits can't take a cheapo trip to a British enclave.

I think our Health Minister will have more on his mind than holidays for people with children aged 12 -15.

Also he really isn’t responsible for legislation that the Spanish Government are implementing. Perhaps you should email the Spanish Health Minister instead?

LostThePot · 28/11/2021 14:38

@MsFogi

The UK government needs to get on and offer a second vaccine to over 12s and allow them access to the NHS app.
+1
EuromamaAussiekids · 28/11/2021 14:47

I think it's a very sensible precaution.

RonaldMcDonald · 28/11/2021 14:53

Perhaps we’ll stay here and prop up our dire economy instead.

Also all my children over 12 are double vaccinated- I am immunosuppressed
We have to accept that no one wants the possibility of very ill people visiting their country

The double vaccination improves chances immeasurably

itsallgoingpearshaped · 28/11/2021 14:55

Well, holidaying in Spain isn't a human right. Doesn't prevent most people from going, frankly.

To protect their citizens and their tourism industry, they're trying not to let the pandemic run riot there again. Can't say I blame them.
