Spain effectively banning UK children from entering country

Anyone planning a Christmas holiday to Spain or the Canaries? You might have to rethink your plans. News broke overnight that Spain is only allowing fully vaccinated – ie, double jabbed – travellers from the UK and NI to enter the country, meaning anyone over 12 won't get in because they're only allowed one jab as things stand.

@Fairylights25

Spanish gov did various u turns all summer to avoid missing out on the summer trade this year!
No they didn't. Its a sensible precaution and won't effect their tourism industry, they have been been working hard to attract tourists from other EU countries & beyond since 2016.

Or as my DD Spanish friends said to her "Brexit has made the UK feel far away"

I'm just surprised they didn't do it earlier.
@TedGlenn I don't think the staff at Gatwick will care - it will be the border control in Spain who check whether you're able to enter the country!
In fact not the case; on Sunday Easyjet staff prevented a number of passengers from boarding due to last minute changes in Swiss entry requirements.

*This. PPS number is required www2.hse.ie/screening-and-vaccinations/covid-19-vaccine/user-guide/

You could take your chance with a walk in centre and hope a PPS number is not asked however walk in centres are few and far between at the moment since the roll out of boosters most
centres are back to appointment only.*

PPS is not required. You need proof vaccination in another country (to get a second jab), and letter with address from hotel/AirBnb.

I’ve always been surprised that the newspapers haven’t flagged the lack of travel as another major Brexit bollox. This summer my German relatives and their kids went with ease to Spain, France and Italy.

Well we went to Greece and Italy from the UK, and that was really easy too. Tests on way in and out of Italy.

What is funny is the people who genuinely think that EU countries have all gone bankrupt because Brits can't/couldn't go. I was in Rome in the summer (from where I live) and it was just as full of tourists as ever, with the exception possibly of fewer Japanese and Chinese- though there were some. Americans, all the other EU citizens. People really were not wringing their hands that Bob and Margaret hadn't come. I'm on a FB travel group and it imploded yesterday with the news about Spain. Everyone getting very humphy that "if they don't want our unvaccinated children then they won't get my money" As (coming from Italy, despite being triple vaccinated and with a double vaccinated teen) I cba to isolate upon entry to the UK, I'll probably change my travel plans to either Spain or Switzerland.

@SummerBluez

Why are people snapping at the OP? She literally posted saying people may have to rethink their plans, nothing else. Anything covid related makes people so angry it's a joke.
I posted a similar thread since I joined MN tonight to ask a question and didn't realise a similar thread was up. Yes, I know I should have searched first (was a member years ago).

@Loudestcat14 I feel for you and we are in the same position having to cancel holiday to visit family members. Ignore the sour ones. No idea why some people are so angry at a simple question.

samyeagar · 30/11/2021 21:08

And from a strict public health and transmission standpoint, unvaccinated under 12's are just as much of a transmission risk as any other unvaccinated person, likely even more so if they have been in school...

Loudestcat14 · 30/11/2021 23:07

AliceA2021 Thank you. I have ignored them. I posted with good intentions, simply to impart the info, but there will always be people who want to twist things and start an argument. Best not to rise to it!

I did ask MNHQ to change the title and remove the 'ban' bit but they refused, saying it might be confusing if people read the thread. So it's on them that I'm getting hammered!

Yes it’s not border control. Which is what most people would expect. The country requires the airline to check passengers are allowed to enter and can fine the airline if they let on someone who doesn’t meet the requirements.

For those who have been wondering about vaccination for the 5-11 group in Spain and how it can impact future travelling plans, Spain is due to receive the first doses of the child vaccine in the last couple of weeks of December.

Spain’s minister for health has confirmed she expects the proposal to extend vaccination to children with the Pfizer injection will be very soon.

Spain has one of the world highest fully vaccinated rates for the over 12s and considering that the rate of cases in children under 11 is the highest of all age groups, I’ll assume they’ll move on fast with children inoculations like they did with the over 12 group last summer.

Do a google translate to English of the article, the translation is very good.
