Why are things ' kicking off ' in Europe ?

Please excuse my ignorance. But why is Germany for example stressing so much about covid right now ?

I think we have more cases per 100 k than them and have been having high cases for months and we are still open and not ' that much ' talk about lockdown etc. It seems we are kind of just about ' OK '. Well at least we aren't going to plan B yet.

However in Germany there have been few cases and cases are now exploding and there's talk of lock downs etc.

Hospitals also seem to be full again. Whereas in the UK, they don't seem to be on the brink.

Why these differences ? Germany and UK have a very similar proportion of the population vaccinated. Is it because cases are seeming to go up very rapidly, whereas ours have been high but flat for ages ?

Why are their hospitals full again and ours are not ?

Please correct any factual information which is incorrect.

@Babdoc

Some PPs have said Scotland has vaccine passports for theatres etc. This is not true. I attended a capacity crowd indoor concert last night, and nobody checked vaccine status at any point. The e ticket asked patrons to download the Covid tracer app, but again, nobody checked. As many of the attendees were in their 80s, I suspect quite a few may have lacked the tech or knowledge to do so anyway. I think Sturgeon has backtracked on passports, possibly due to IT failings. We do still have masks for indoor events, but again nobody checks if non wearers are genuinely exempt.
Can't speak for the event you attended, but I don't think Sturgeon has backtracked on vaccine passports? Rather they are looking at extending it to cinemas, theatres and more hospitality venues from 6 December, with the decision on that to be made next week.

Their hospitals are not more fuller than the UK and as you pointed out full vaccination rates are similar - 69% UK v 68% the UK.

There is no that much difference with new Covid cases - almost 60,000 pd in Germany with almost 50,000 pd in the UK.

What's the difference? Germany is looking at these numbers, getting seriously concerned and placing restrictions on the unvaccinated while the UK don't give a fuck about numbers anymore.

I think your UK press (with your government help) is too focused on what's happening in Europe instead of concentrating what's happening at home.

We are stable not rising quickly

It’s a different approach which hopefully will work out for us

Incorrect - the exponential growth is Germany is a huge and extremely concerning difference. The UK should be very focused on what is happening in Europe for this reason alone.

Or our UK Government( with the help of a compliant press ) is too focused on what's happening in Europe instead of concentrating what's happening at home.

Yes this is why it’s in our media

@seb342

Things are conveniently "kicking off" in Germany because they need reason to justify the measures they are bringing in and to try and win back public support.

I've got family living there and they have posted videos of protests that we don't see because the mainstream media don't want us getting ideas.

They've also just stopped unvaccinated people from using public transport and need very good reason for this, hence the alarming data they are suddenly releasing.

The booster jab isn't going down well over there either, seems they question things more than us and won't blindly follow the government.

Conspiracy bollocks without merit or even any thought behind it. And I'm bored of protest footage of people who couldn't possibly wear a mask but will happily wear a balaclava to intimidate medics. Get over yourself. Read some actual science.
AuldAlliance · 19/11/2021 10:46

The UK government is currently too focused on how MPs can keep second jobs and carry on giving bungs to pals to bother with Covid.

alborana · 19/11/2021 10:47

I'm in London. Mask wearing is not required except on public transport, and it isn't enforced. Life appears back to normal.
Since the summer I've known a lot of people get Covid. All either vaccinated or children. I haven't known a single person get seriously ill, most have had mild cold symptoms and some have only known they were positive through testing. Rates in my area have dropped in the last few weeks.

I know things may change but it feels like we're starting to live with the virus. So many people seem determined to make everything into a negative story but at the moment to me it feels like a positive one. I hope it stays that way.

DameFanny · 19/11/2021 10:48

And hospitals are on their knees but when asked about it Idiot Johnson just waffles about extra spending that they'll end up passing to private healthcare run by Tory donors

The reason it hasn't kicked off over here? The Tories don't care and most of the media are run by Tories.

Sorry, I don't believe in differences when vaccination rates and cases per day are similar.

The only difference is how your press report them. Your NHS is in serious problems with doctors saying time and again this winter could be disastrous and government preferring to do what they did last year - wait until you have deaths in the thousands.

There are no shortcuts for Covid or nationalist crap "we are better than the rest". There is medical advice and when it's winter, people are interacting with each other indoors, the is no clear policy on masks and more than 30% of the population is unvaccinated, there is trouble looming.

MarshaBradyo · 19/11/2021 10:51

Alondra what is the rate of increase for U.K. v Austria or Germany?

MarshaBradyo · 19/11/2021 10:53

As an aside it’s weird how insulting people get about it just because it’s the U.K.

Just look at the figures including all variables and make a point

If you have the data to back up a claim use that instead.

Why don't you tell me yourself? World stats are clear to all.
CuteOrangeElephant · 19/11/2021 10:56

In the Netherlands it was in the news recently that ambulances had to wait up to an hour to unload their patients into A+E. In the UK this is not a cause for concern because it's more usual.

BunsyGirl · 19/11/2021 10:57

@Alondra
The current case rate in Austria is more than double the U.K. Ireland, Netherlands and Belgium all have much higher rates than the U.K.

MarshaBradyo · 19/11/2021 10:58

World stats are clear to all.

Yes they are.
If you look you might see an important difference instead of ignoring it.

Delatron · 19/11/2021 10:58

It’s just strange. When cases were high in France earlier this year I didn’t think ‘what a laughing stock why aren’t you locking down?’ I don’t look at Austria or Germany now and think they’ve messed up. I think it’s a virus doing what viruses do.

But when our cases are high it’s a different matter. ‘Europe is looking at us in horror’. What a laughing stock we are, how irresponsible. Completely ignoring the fact that we have some very good scientists and epidemiologists advising Boris. He’s not just making this up as he goes along.

We’re all on the same path with this virus just at different stages...

Delatron · 19/11/2021 11:01

Interesting that Sweden is right at the bottom of that table. It’s as though coming in and out of lockdown created these massive peaks and troughs.
