Covid positive

A very close family member has tested positive for covid 4 days ago , my child was with them on the day they firstly took an lft which was positive, I then went to pick them up, family member had a positive pcr since and they are asymptomatic. I’ve pcr tested my child Saturday because they had a temperature for a few days and it was negative does this mean we are in the clear ? I’ve woke up with a sore throat and feeling crap so did an lft test today and negative. Does this mean they can go to nursery today can we carry on as normal? I find the guidelines so confusing. I’m double vaxed too. Also track and trace didn’t contact me ?

You carry on as normal. If I were you I'd keep doing daily LFTs if you can though. I had a positive LFT before I had symptoms, and would have gone in to school that day.

Nothingoriginalhere · 08/11/2021 10:15

Actually you should get a pcr - if you have symptoms LFT’s are not meant to be used.

Brewandhoney · 08/11/2021 10:16

If you have symptoms go for a PCR

happytoday73 · 08/11/2021 10:17

You need a pcr. I would also redo your child as symptoms and could have been too early to catch.
Hopefully both just getting a cold

MilkCereal · 08/11/2021 10:24

Pcr test if not well for you and child

PurpleDaisies · 08/11/2021 10:25

The government haven’t updated which symptoms qualify for a pcr. I would just book one anyway and say you’re a contact.

What symptoms do you have? If you have any of the big three, you need to stay home and isolate until you get a negative pcr. If you don’t, you technically can carry on as normal but I’d take as much extra care as you can. I’ve got Covid and only had cold symptoms.

Lfts are fine to use with symptoms. A negative result doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have Covid but you could get a positive which will show you that you pretty much certainly do. That’s how dh and I found out we had Covid.

This is helpful to bear in mind. The top symptoms for Covid when you’re double vaccinated are no longer the classic ones. It’s headache, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and then persistent cough.

ChristmasGrogu · 08/11/2021 10:29

Any symptoms then get a PCR op, which you have. You won’t know you’re in the clear until you’ve hit 10 days past.

Put1304 · 08/11/2021 12:40

@PurpleDaisies You can use lft with symptoms ? That’s good because some people have told me you can’t. I have sinus pain sore throat and achey /sneezing so I do have them on the list you posted. But my lft was negative today so hopefully just a cold. Thanks everyone will do lft everyday or a pcr & retest my child in a few days.

@Put1304 you absolutely can. I took a LFT shortly after losing my sense of taste and smell and it came back with a strong positive in seconds. I then took a second one to be sure and had the same result!

Lots of people really don’t understand what lfts can and can’t do.

The general thinking is they’re not accurate enough to rule out Covid so they shouldn’t be used instead of a pcr to say you’re negative if you’ve got one of the three key symptoms.

Lfts are normally there for a symptomatic testing to warn you that you’ve got Covid when you don’t have any symptoms.

Lfts don’t suddenly stop working if you get a headache or a sore throat. They work best when you’ve got a high viral load which is often when you’re developing symptoms. You can use a lft to show your cold is in fact Covid and then confirm it with a pcr. You shouldn’t use them to prove you’re Covid free.

Dh and I both realised we had Covid on lfts. Neither of us had classic symptoms.

exexpat · 08/11/2021 12:54

You and your DC have got symptoms and have been in contact with someone who has tested positive, so you should get a PCR as soon as possible. You really can't trust LFTs.

I had three negative LFTs in the days before my PCR came back positive, including one an hour or two before going for the PCR.

Justwingingit2005 · 08/11/2021 12:57

They say lfts shouldn't used as need a higher viral load.
4 of us had pcr confirmed covid. 3 had positive lfts. 1 didn't have a positive lft until a few days after the pcr ( he is 11 and wanted to see if he was a medical marvel and never have a postive lft that's why we carried on testing).
