What concerns you more about getting Covid: the illness itself or the need to quarantine for 10 days?

Interested to know whether I'm an outlier... Having had Covid in the house previously and not being infected myself, thinking about it, I'm more concerned about the prospect of 10 days self-isolation than the illness.

Long term damage (blood clots etc) or dying. I know someone who has blood clots from covid and will be on medication for a longtime possibly life.

I don’t care about quarantining particularly. After all the lockdowns what’s another ten days?

ArcheryAnnie · 06/11/2021 22:11

BackofBeyond50 thank you.

Looking after a toddler whilst feeling crap whilst said toddler becomes feral from being cooped up

ArcheryAnnie · 06/11/2021 22:13

Oh, and a friend I've had since the late 1980s - his ashes were interred this morning. Leaves behind a wife and two very small daughters.

Cherrydown · 06/11/2021 22:15

Before having it I would have said quarantine, I thought I'd have it mildly as I've been double vaxxed.

Now I've had it, I'd say illness, I've never felt so ill and 4 weeks on I'm still not right.

ArcheryAnnie · 06/11/2021 22:21

Cherrydown I hope you feel properly better soon.

delilahbucket · 06/11/2021 22:21

The isolation period. I'm self employed and don't get paid to have ten days off. I also cannot just drop my business overnight to isolate. I would have to cancel all existing orders or risk losing my business being penalised for dispatching late. It could cost me a months worth of work if not my entire livelihood.

Timeisavirtue · 06/11/2021 22:51

Quarantine... the only thing that concerns me about the illness is if I inadvertently passed it on to someone else. The thought of quarantining When you can’t even go for a walk make me anxious..

ArcheryAnnie · 07/11/2021 00:56

deliabucket would your business survive if you had to spend four months in bed?

MountainDweller · 07/11/2021 01:13

Illness. CEV and overdue my booster Hmm Haven't had Covid yet but was pretty ill after both jabs so don't think the real thing would be a walk in the park. Quarantine would only be a pain because I'd have to cancel all my regular treatments (and pay for any I couldn't cancel 24/48 hours in advance), so my other conditions would worsen during the quarantine period as well.

Athinginitself · 07/11/2021 05:02

Having covid. Had it once 18 months ago and still having problems now. Was an absolutely dreadful experience. Obviously hopefully I'd fair better this time round as double vaxxed plus booster but I am definitely trying to avoid it.

RichTeaRichTea · 07/11/2021 05:18

Of course people’s responses are based on experience. I have ongoing problems from PND that was left untreated due to lockdowns and isolations in my circumstances. It would be absolutely awful to be laid up for months with covid unable to work or care for my very small children, it would cause us terrible hardship. It’s pretty awful just trying to look after the children while trying to recover from the endless colds they bring home as it is, so I’m not looking for ways to get more illnesses. But the PND and its awful and long-lasting effects have happened to me and my family, so inevitably the thought of the quarantine and my fragile mental health is at the forefront of my mind in terms of most likely impact on us.

Noonoo8589 · 07/11/2021 05:28

Quarantine.

Backofbeyond50 · 07/11/2021 05:31

@MountainDweller you can now book boater online.

Backofbeyond50 · 07/11/2021 05:32

Booster. Damn autocorrect.

Blueberry40 · 07/11/2021 05:33

Definitely the illness and passing it on to family members. Would be quite happy isolating for 10 days!

Backofbeyond50 · 07/11/2021 05:39

It is actually quite worrying the number of people adamant that the illness will be so mild because.. .
The simple fact us no one knows. I have a double jabbed friend the same age as me who has been ill for a whole month. and still not right. He lost tons of weight and felt extremely ill. I too am self employed but would rather the possibility of 10 days quarantine than being possibly being really ill and off for much longer.
Hope things improve for everyone suffering.

Backofbeyond50 · 07/11/2021 05:40

That is everyone suffering for whatever reason in these challenging times.

sunshinedaysp · 07/11/2021 05:53

@HappyPumpkin81

Having to quarantine with a 4 year old by myself in a tiny house. I have already had to do it twice due to her being a close contact, but uninfected. I cannot do it again.
Me too but with a 3 year old!

I did have Covid and it was mild so I based my answer on that. The isolating at home for 10 days with a bored 8 year old was worse than Covid.

My concern is that even if covid is mild, ten days’ quarantine could mean possibly being ill on and off for a long time with poor mental health. It has happened before over the last 18 months, so this isn’t me minimising covid - it’s a very real outcome that is known for me, while the risks of covid are still unknown, even if I am aware of them
RichTeaRichTea · 07/11/2021 06:11

I also have lost two people to covid, and know a number with long term complications, so it’s not that I haven’t seen the impact. But inevitably when I have already experienced the deterioration of my mental health due to isolation periods I’m going to have that experience at the forefront of my mind as a highly likely outcome rather than the risks of covid which exist but less likely overall

PrincessNutNuts · 07/11/2021 06:54

The illness side of things.

Passing it on to someone more vulnerable than us.

Letting people down regarding my caring responsibilities and volunteering because I'm ill.

The as yet largely unknown long term consequences of having had covid.

The worst part when we all had it was leaving ill and frightened teenagers at home with their godmother to drive DH to A&E. None of us had ever seen him ill before.

Trying to look after an ill family when ill myself was also not fun.

The isolation didn't really impinge.

But honestly, having seen my parents told not to leave their house for months when advised to shield I don't think I'd dare whinge about a few days.

No one who said the vulnerable should be made to isolate for the duration while the rest of us us got on with life as normal should either.

PrincessNutNuts · 07/11/2021 07:06

And missing work. I was off for three weeks. DH has a subordinate who was off for a year and then back on light duties. We know people off work for even longer than that.

Spikeyball · 07/11/2021 07:09

"It is actually quite worrying the number of people adamant that the illness will be so mild because.."

Statistically the chances of anyone in my household being very unwell are small. The chance of my household becoming unsafe because of ds being cooped up for several weeks is close to 100%.
