My Ds tested postitive on wed doing a random check as his friend had tested positive. The lateral flow tested positive almost immediately. He had a pcr wed night came back Thursday positive.

He said his taste was dulled but its now improved and today he decided to do another lateral flow it was negative.

The rest of our housrhold had pcr tests friday & came back today negative.

I dont kbow whether he's had it linger than we thought or if its all false positive.

I woke up last night soaking wet but no temperature. Is this a symptom?

It’s not a false positive, just a positive, there is no point doing lateral flows once you have confirmation. He just needs to isolate for the full ten days & if any of you develop symptoms then you do another PCR. A false positive lateral or PCR (& especially both) are incredibly unlikely. Just because he has little or no symptoms doesn’t mean he isn’t contagious, neither does a negative lateral flow after infection is confirmed.

Of course we are following the guidlines and issolating for the full time. I just find it odd as he had a large mouth ulcer & was using lidocaine i wondered if this had affected the tests.

I think he may have had it longer. May have had it before his friend! It’s possible. I had night sweats without a fever AFTER I had covid. Like a week or 2 after covid.

Also forgot to mention, my sister tested negative on lateral flows 4 days after her initial positive.

Ah Thank you such a very strange virus my DS has escaped from it so many times looks like this time it got him. He had a sleepovee with a friend 2 weeks ago & avoided it but at school every day one if his friebds went diwn with it it. I guess we may well catch it too.

I can understand why you might think this would affect a lateral flow, but PCR tests are done in a completely different way. The false positive rate is very low.

This is one of the reasons why school children were asked to do regular LFT each week, just to try and pick up cases, although we now know there are not 100% reliable, it’s good to know that the system in place worked and that he got his positive case confirmed through a PCR test. As regards to other family members, it might be a good idea to get further PCR tests done, especially if you now have symptoms.

I’m not sure of the confusion. LFTs don’t always pick up positive results so his negative result doesn’t mean much in the context of his other positives
