I came across an interesting thread on Sweden's approach to the pandemic and how it has influenced other countries. twitter.com/virpiflyg/status/1452765297581113346?s=21

Wow. That was an interesting read. (Can't wait for the But Sweden! nongs to jump all over this thread, hahaha.)

I haven't read this through fully, but the conclusions are interesting.

What is a nong? It sounds like it could be something incredibly offensive?

nong [nÉ’Å‹] NOUN AUSTRALIAN NEW ZEALAND informal a foolish or stupid person (often as a general term of abuse).

It's a casual term for an idiot. See also "Ningnong"

[ˈnɪŋnɒŋ]

NEW ZEALAND
informal
a fool.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 29/10/2021 01:11

Ningnong? Nong? Really hoping neither of these are adopted here as acceptable informal abuse of others.

milkyaqua · 29/10/2021 01:18

Gosh, would you prefer ninny? That's about equivalent. Silly people.

All the But Sweden! ninnies... is that better for you?

PS: Don't come to Australia if you don't like slang, we have a lot of it.

Ozzy Man testing celebrities is always worth a look.

I think people are reacting to "nong" because it sounds similar to the UK "m*ng." But it's an unrelated word.

People trying to police other countries' language is not a good look.

It would be interesting to know if he would have been right without the varients. But I am surprised he thought vaccines were so far off. I would have agreed with him last year and I'm amazed that the vaccines were produced and rolled out so quickly. But as an expert I would have hoped he would have better information than me. Especially as AZ is a Swedish company.
