Pinged by Test & Trace

Can anyone help me, as I can't find the information online.

Recently returned from a trip abroad, did a 2nd day PCR test and await the results today. Partner had his result: negative. Awaiting mine some hours later (despite our tests being provided at the same time!). In the meantime, we have both been contacted by NHS T&T to say we have been in close contact with someone with COVID. Only, neither of us had checked in on the app anywhere in the last 10 days. How could NHS T&T have known we have come into contact with someone with COVID? I had understood the app did not run in the background on your phone, and relied on people checking into locations and recording results. Any ideas? A little confused why we have both received the ping.

Were you on a flight to your destination?

thewhatsit · 27/10/2021 16:53

You were contacted via a ping on the app or actually contacted by T&T because they are different things?

JuneOsborne · 27/10/2021 16:54

It might be someone you know. When they rang because my teen D's tested positive, they asked who we'd been in contact with and their telephone numbers, email addresses, postcodes, the lot. My husband got his notification before I'd come off the phone! So no chance to tell him before he thought oh god, what chance do I stand now! Teen son and a close contact of another person!

Rosehip10 · 27/10/2021 16:56

If you have been contacted by telephone by t&t it is nothing to with the App

Wellbythebloodyhell · 27/10/2021 16:58

Probably someone on your flight has tested positive

boxinell · 27/10/2021 17:02

Thanks all. As you can tell, neither of us have been contacted before. We have been contacted by text and email, not the app, which makes sense now as we had not checked in. We did fly there and back, so maybe it was the airline, airport or hotel. Either would have our details on record anyway, so no doubt could get in contact with us.

yes the app runs in the background and works on bluetooth.

But you haven't been pinged by the app, you have been named to track and trace as a contact. You should be able to work out the date of contact so you have an idea where it was.

itsgettingwierd · 27/10/2021 17:26

It'll likely be someone who was on the plane because you all would have given details via the locator form.

You're wrong about the app as the whole premise of it is that it runs in the background and uses Bluetooth to be in contact with other phones using the app. If an owner of another phone tests positive they put a code in the app and the app pings other phones its been in contact with to alert them.
Cookerhood · 27/10/2021 17:36

It will be the plane. We got contacted like that too. If the app is switched off it won't be running in the background. I'd love to know how many planes have resulted on people being contacted (we knew because all 4 who had traveled together were contacted.

Polkadotties · 27/10/2021 17:37

If you’re double vaccinated you can ignore it

Cookerhood · 27/10/2021 17:39

They will want you to get a PCR. They nagged us to get one. By the time we got the results it was 10 days from the flight landing Confused

antsinyourpanta · 27/10/2021 17:40

A colleague of mine (and his travelling companions) were all contacted after they came back from holiday and assume it was someone on the plane.

I have been pinged twice from the app, within 2 weeks, both I think from my train journey to or from work, as I had been nowhere apart from work both days (and not scanned any qr codes)

72WayTooCool · 27/10/2021 18:21

It will defo be the flight. Same thing happened to us last week. Someone must have tested positive after their 2 day test. I have the app but contact tracing is turned off and I haven't checked in anywhere for months.

SirensofTitan · 27/10/2021 18:26

Isn't this what the passenger forms are for? It sounds like the system is working properly

I was initially going to express surprise that being pinged was still a thing, I see that's not what happened but is anyone actually being pinged nowadays?

Cookerhood · 27/10/2021 18:39

Exactly. It takes awhile though - person dies 2 day test, takes 2 days to get test back, test & trace contact you, send off for test, test arrives, send off test, get results. Just about at day 10!

Cookerhood · 27/10/2021 18:44

does!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 27/10/2021 18:48

Our day 2 PCR results were back 8 hours after we did it (in a drive in centre)

We were just debating how long it would be before we would be contacted if someone on our recent flight had tested positive. Both double vaccinated so legally don't have to isolate but we would lie low for the week that would take us up to 10 days post flight.

boxinell · 27/10/2021 19:10

Well this is it. It doesn't say when I am supposed to have come into contact with said patient X and when the timer starts. Only that I should isolate for 10 days (which I don't need to as double jabbed).

I suspect it was the flight as most have said. Still waiting on day 2 pcr result, and have ordered a govt pcr test to be on the safe side.

OP posts:
Cookerhood · 27/10/2021 19:29

When you get through the system registering yourself it will tell you what date you have to isolate until (except you don't!). If you work backwards it will tell you what date you were exposed. I bet it's the plane.

boxinell · 28/10/2021 12:01

@Cookerhood thanks. It only says I don't need to self isolate, but should do a PCR. Phew. Just had one negative one this week already so fingers crossed it's another!
