Does anyone else keep getting false positives on LFD tests?

Hi. I have been doing regular LFD tests because of my job since March/April. Since then I have had at least four or five false positive tests. The most recent one was yesterday morning. Immediately booked a PCR test and a negative result came back last night.
I was under the impression that false positives are rare, but if that's the case, why have I had so many?
I follow the instructions carefully (been doing them for so long, I could probably do them with my eyes closed). I do them first thing in the morning before I've eaten or drunk anything, but if I do them later in the day, I make sure I do them after a long period of not eating/drinking.

Has anyone else had experience of this? Have you been able to work out why this happens?

@Boofay sorry, I wasn't implying you were being sloppy just putting it forward for consideration if you're getting confusing results. Smile

@Iggly

Where are you getting the new style from Online ordering
I am ordering on line though & still keep getting the old style.

@Littlemiss74 I ordered through the Gov. website too.

They must just have a stash of old ones especially for me, I can’t get any new ones anywhere!

Iggly · 27/10/2021 12:03

Oh no! All of mine ordered online have been the new style - I’m in the SE

Boofay · 27/10/2021 12:22

They keep sending me the old style. Maybe those in Wales only get the old style.

I’ve had 2 positive LFD with 2 negative PCR tests. These were the nose only LFD tests and the second PCR was taken 1.5hrs roughly after the LFD (first was postal so was about 30hrs apart).

At the time toddler DD was positive on a PCR so I’m inclined to believe the LFD. I was stuck home with her anyway so it was immaterial really. But frustrating!
I had no symptoms and have had both vaccines.

I've tested my DS again. 7 days since the first very faint line on a nose only LTF. Had two negative PCRs in between and no symptoms. The test this morning still shows an extremely faint grey line. You can only see it by looking really carefully but there is something there that I don't see on other tests.

I'm wondering, does the line maybe have to be pink to be positive? Rather than grey? We are isolating anyway but I'm finding it so confusing and want to know for number of days to isolate etc.

I have probably had at least 50 positive lateral flow tests. I think I've had one negative in all the tests I've taken since may. Never had a positive PCR. No idea why.

Boofay · 30/10/2021 10:02

Well, Thursday's pcr home test came through at 2am - negative. Again!
So, definitely haven't had covid, definitely have had positive looking lfd's and have definitely been taking the tests correctly, as per instructions in the boxes. I'm still as clueless as when I started this thread.
It would seem from this thread and other similar threads that some of us just get positives for some strange reason. I hope that this issue gets researched and we get some answers. It's very frustrating and messes up plans, works etc.

I'm another like you @Boofay! I have had many positive LFT and three neg PCR over a three week period. I've stopped testing now because they are all positive!! I've done both old and new LFT ones too. Some are faint, some are not. No idea what is causing this. I've tested at different times of the day too.

@zaffa you had covid. Those aren't evaporation lines, they are clear positive.
It is highly likely that something went wrong with the PCRs. The lab scandal has shown that LFT positives ARE real and should be believed, even when they get a negative PCR.

That last one is three weeks after the first positive though .... I also agree I had covid, but I don't think I would have such a strong positive three weeks after the first LFt and still be negative?

zaffa · 30/10/2021 20:45

@Tinysnickers although for safety I did isolate for ten days regardless of PCRs, but as I have continued to test positive I'm concerned about when that will end!

Tinysnickers · 30/10/2021 20:49

Some people do carry on testing positive for quite a while. That's why they generally say to avoid testing for 90 days after a positive.

mamatro · 30/10/2021 21:39

I'm exactly the same tested positive on about 20 LFTs and 3 negative PCRs
Haven't tested in about a week, then tested today and I still have a faint positive.. very bizarre. I hope we find out one day why!
