sanitising trolleys etc - just in Scotland?

Thanks to Nicola, Queen of Covid, we're still living with lots more restrictions here in Scotland to those of you in England. We have masks in indoor spaces, masks in schools, vaccine passports, lots of other things are still online and yet to open up - DS in his first year at Uni and has three in person classes from September - January.

Was in the supermarket earlier and people are still queuing up to pull off the wee squares on blue paper and squirt some stuff on the handles of their trolleys. I have always thought this was completely pointless and have never bothered, but it seems the shops here are unwilling to abandon it.

Are other places in the UK still doing this? What about places held up as paragons of Covid virtue like Spain/France/Germany - are all the shoppers there dutifully wiping their trolley handles?

I agree @Iloveallofthem

Well it must depend very much on local covid-culture I think. As its not mandated to do so here (North London, fairly central zone 2/3) as far as I can see, hardly anyone does, at least at my local Sainsbos. There are still supplies out to do so and the odd person does, but absolutely no one gets judged either way. It doesn't necessarily correlate with mask wearing either I think, as plenty of people wear masks in the shop but don't necessarily sanitise the trolly.

Pootle40 · 25/10/2021 07:18

Never did this ever.

TheVampiresWife · 25/10/2021 07:28

I've noticed people very occasionally doing it here (England). Usually people who are masked/wearing gloves. I assume they're at higher risk or are a bit anxious. The only time it's any concern of mine is when they block the entrance to Aldi and a massive queue builds up behind them but that's more the fault of Aldi for putting the 'cleaning stations' where they do.

I was in Scotland last week and was surprised by how shit hot everywhere was with checking in/masks. I'm exempt and was stopped every single time I went into a shop/venue, even though I wear a very visible lanyard. In one pub the barmaid told me I had to use the disabled toilet 'to keep everyone safe', and to come and find her for the key when I needed to use it. Naturally she was nowhere to be found when I did so I used the main toilets. She also pointed at her own mask and said she had asthma but still managed to wear one. I've had bother from people in England when masks were mandatory but never from staff so it was quite a surprise!

Claudethecat · 25/10/2021 07:59

Not many people do here in Wales now, although almost every one wears masks. I do sanitize the trolly handle, maybe it is pointless but it harms no-one. At the very least it might stop me getting the horrific cold that is going around.

Claudethecat · 25/10/2021 07:59

Trolley!

Kevinishot · 25/10/2021 08:05

I’ve never done this & never will. I touch lift doors, taps, handles, handrails etc as do most people… when does it end? Covid theatre totally.

PlausibleSuit · 25/10/2021 09:34

I do think it varies.

I'm in Edinburgh and I don't generally see people wiping trolley handles when I go into the supermarket.

There's a brunch place near us that is super-pushy on things like sanitising hands on the way in and checking into Test & Protect. They literally stand over you while you do it. But I think the owner is very anxious about covid (you can tell by the way he is with people) so it's him enforcing the rules to the letter rather than Sturgeon.

In my experience most other places have slackened off quite a bit. Besides this brunch place, I can't remember the last time I actually signed into Test & Protect.

I do it because I want my DS to be able to go places other than Tesco's. Even double vaccinated, if he catches Covid he will die.
Siriisatwat · 25/10/2021 10:03

I seem to be the only one using the cleaning stations at the supermarkets I go to.

But I used to take antibacterial wipes to clean trolley handless long before covid, because people are picks who pick their noses and don’t wash their hands after wiping their arses. I’ve never wanted to touch a trolley after someone else without cleaning it.

Siriisatwat · 25/10/2021 10:03

*pigs, rather

Timescale · 25/10/2021 10:09

Yep I used to clean handles long before covid. I don’t want other people’s snot etc on my hands.

Do it if you want. Don’t do it if you don’t. I’m sure nobody is going to judge you one way or another.

2boysand1princess · 25/10/2021 10:13

@Rosehip10

All this "sanitising" of surfaces is pure covid theatre - covid is transmitted by airborne particles.
It’s lives on surfaces too! Just like May other viruses. Being airborne doesn’t mean it only exists in the air and does once it hits a surface.

That's rank

@FreshFreesias

Wee Jimmy needs help with her health anxiety.
Hmm 🙄

Pathetic.

You realise that NS isn't solely responsible for implementing restrictions and rules? Can you still not comprehend that after 18 months?

Benjispruce4 · 25/10/2021 10:20

Lucky you having a PM that wants to protect the people! Ours doesn’t give a shit!
I still sanitise the trolley and wear a mask. I hope the trolley station stays regardless of Covid, people are filthy, pick their noses, don’t wash their hands after the loo! Yuk.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/10/2021 10:23

Still available in supermarkets here (NW England). Quite like having clean trolleys anyway, hope it stays.

Theregoesmyhomebirth · 25/10/2021 10:26

Never mind the handles, when will people stop putting children in the main trolley - dirty shoes all over where we put our shopping

Yep

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 10:28

It's not a bad idea generally.
I believe they have done it pre pandemic at Costco.

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 10:33

TheVampiresWife I'm sorry the barstaff gave you attitude like that. It's all a bit silly in pubs at this point when you can sit unmasked and talk and often they won't open a window.

TheVampiresWife · 25/10/2021 10:41

We were astonished that there were signs everywhere saying 'keep one metre apart'/'masks must be worn when not seated' but the tables were about 1ft apart, and we were less than 2ft from the people sitting next to us, talking loudly over the music and general chatter as you'd expect in a bar. Staff told us where to sit, too, so we couldn't even choose to sit at a table away from others if we wanted to.

I don't mind sitting close to others or whatever, it just seemed really odd and contradictory.

TheVampiresWife · 25/10/2021 10:44

@2boysand1princess fomite transmission has been pretty much debunked

StupidPhones · 25/10/2021 10:48

@TheVampiresWife, exactly, non of it makes tremendous sense scientifically at this point but it helps people feel a little more in control. Or intensely frustrates them..
I have walked, masked, into cafes to discover they have no tables and walked back out again. At that point I did admit maybe I'd cut my risk of breathing in a dose of covid or flu!
Otherwise only open windows and doors can help. It's mainly airborne.

madisonbridges · 25/10/2021 10:58

I always quite happily used a trolley and never thought about touching the handle but since covid I clean my trolley, then sanitise my hands every time. I love it. Regardless of covid I want to be able to carry on doing this, so I hope they keep the stations. I've noticed my Lidl hasn't got a stocked station, though.
We were in Scotland in the summer and occasionally I forgot to put a mask on. No one said anything to me, but I put one on as soon as I remembered. I still usually wear a mask here. I think it makes other people feel safer so I do it out of courtesy.
