sanitising trolleys etc - just in Scotland?

Thanks to Nicola, Queen of Covid, we're still living with lots more restrictions here in Scotland to those of you in England. We have masks in indoor spaces, masks in schools, vaccine passports, lots of other things are still online and yet to open up - DS in his first year at Uni and has three in person classes from September - January.

Was in the supermarket earlier and people are still queuing up to pull off the wee squares on blue paper and squirt some stuff on the handles of their trolleys. I have always thought this was completely pointless and have never bothered, but it seems the shops here are unwilling to abandon it.

Are other places in the UK still doing this? What about places held up as paragons of Covid virtue like Spain/France/Germany - are all the shoppers there dutifully wiping their trolley handles?

Not compulsory, but lots of people are still being considerate enough to wear masks inside shops where I live in England.
I do wipe the trolley handle too - not for COVID prevention so much as it just seems quite a sensible thing to to - there are a lot of unhygienic people touching the trolley before me, so, for the couple of seconds it takes me, I think I might as well.

BananaPB · 24/10/2021 20:03

There are people in my local Morrison's in England doing the trolley thing even though it's highly unlikely to catch COVID from a surface. However I think it might be a good thing if you don't want to end up with D&V or norovirus because people don't wash their hands and nightlife like foxes and rats have pissed on the trolleys.

Artie30 · 24/10/2021 20:04

I still do this in U.K. not many are doing the same though!

KingsleyShacklebolt · 24/10/2021 20:10

@PurplePosies

Why wouldn't you? I'm no germaphobe but people are seriously disgusting.
Because I'm not a germaphobe!

Who ever got ill from touching a supermarket trolley handle? If you're that paranoid about germs/dirt, just wash your hands when you get home. And don't lick the trolley.

I did this for the first few months but not since then
Covid theatre at it's most ridiculous !

SirChenjins · 24/10/2021 20:12

do you spray and wipe everything you pick up in store too?

No, smart arse. I’m sure if you think about it you’ll work out why all by yourself.

BananaPB · 24/10/2021 20:13

Considering that they are stored outside overnight and how few people wash their hands (especially men apparently), I suspect that they harbour a lot of germs. Not unusual for a child with a runny nose or cough to be sat in the child bit while holding onto the bar.

Oblomov21 · 24/10/2021 20:13

Have never done it. Think it's pointless.

SirChenjins · 24/10/2021 20:14

OP - why does it bother you what others to do the extent you’ve started a thread on MN about it? Don’t give any headspace to what others do when it doesn’t affect you, you’ll feel much better for it.

liveforsummer · 24/10/2021 20:15

Everyone I know is pleased that we still have a level of basic and easy restrictions. I don't clean my trolley handles but fine to wear a mask

KingsleyShacklebolt · 24/10/2021 20:16

It bothers me because when I breezed into the supermarket this morning, passing the queue of people queuing up in the rain for their wee shot with the blue roll and squirty bottle, I got daggers and mutters from at least two of the people in the queue.

OP posts:
Wafflehouse · 24/10/2021 20:18

Masks indoors are still in place in NI, the sanitising stations are all still there and most people where I am seem to still be using them.

Wafflehouse · 24/10/2021 20:19

Although it’s personal choice and no one seems bothered if others don’t use them

SirChenjins · 24/10/2021 20:20

Yeah sure - an entire queue of what, 2 or 3 people? If you walked past the queue then unless you were looking at straight at them you wouldn’t have seen the daggers or heard the mutters - but so what if they do? Just move on.

Mrsjayy · 24/10/2021 20:20

That isnt Nicola sturgeons fault folk tutted at you I bet it was your superior strut Grin

Yummymummy2020 · 24/10/2021 20:24

I don’t bother but I would be very enthusiastic with the hand sanitiser and I wash my hands when I get home properly. I still wear a mask in public indoor places as I just feel it’s sensible and I keep my distance where I can. I don’t give other people angry looks though😂

KingsleyShacklebolt · 24/10/2021 20:24

Were you following me into the supermarket, @SirChenjins?

It's common knowledge that Scotland has been much slower to relax restrictions than England. Hence my wondering whether it's just people in Scotland who are bothering with this, or whether people in England are still doing it too.

At least a whole 2 people tutting - it must have been quite overwhelming.

Who ever got ill from touching a supermarket trolley handle?

While cleaning trolley handles is not something I do, most people will have no idea if they've ever got ill from something you picked up there or in any number of places where you've touched something. You can't trace where a lot of illnesses come from, so who knows? I have a cold just now that DD and DH don't have, even though I have barely been anywhere lately. Who knows where I picked it up?

It's unlikely, of course, but different germs do get transmitted in different ways so I don't think it's entirely unfeasible that someone could pick up some germs from a trolley handle if someone had spent 30 mins coughing or sneezing into their hands and putting them back on the handle every time. The risk of it isn't enough for me to worry about personally, but I don't think it's 0 (I'm thinking not just about Covid, though, but about illnesses in general).

Schulte · 24/10/2021 20:27

Don’t know if anyone has answered this yet but yes, in Germany people do sanitise trolley handles.

SeasonalNamechange · 24/10/2021 20:32

what about the sides of the trolley? do those get a good clean too? where you pull them in when you are looking at produce etc

as well as the end of it? kids hang off every edge. i hope they are all cleaned too...or is it just a selective part?

PiousPenelope · 24/10/2021 20:36

I’ve cleaned my trolley handles for years. People are disgusting
Me too
berlinbabylon · 24/10/2021 20:38

I've not sanitised my basket or trolley at any point during the pandemic. I wash my hands before I go out and I wash my hands when I get back.

When I go to the hairdressers I have to sanitise my hands despite not touching anything (other than the PIN pad when I pay, but I could sanitise my hands at that point, rather than when I arrive).

Covid theatre.

However, I do wish masks were still mandatory in England.
