Tips on testing an 8 year old DD

8 year old DD had a high temperature, headache & vomited twice on Friday night. Fever remained most of yesterday and she was very tired too. She is much better today but has a sore throat but no temperature.

Obviously due to the fever we need to do a PCR. However we are getting tears & screaming about it as the last one she had she hated! She won’t even let me do an LFT.

I’m doing daily LFT’s and show her how quick & simple it is. Have ordered a home PCR as I think that’s less traumatic than doing it at a test centre.

Any tips to get her to do it?!

Or the other option is to assume Covid & isolate over half term for 10 days which also seems unfair 😢

My 8yo fainted at a lft in the early days, so we've been there with the whole not wanting to test.

We actually found the staff at the walk through site super helpful. So if she won't tolerate the home PCR,worth booking into the test site.

Fwiw, when it's lft time in this house, I get the test all ready and then just swab his nose, quick as can be. He prefers it if I do it.

Hi op my little girl hated them but I just did her nose as she tolerated that much better . The current pcr swabs are thicker so they are less stingy in the nose .

Under 12s only have to do the nose swabs now. You don’t have to stick it up very far to be effective.

Get her to do it as you do a lateral flow on yourself. Say things like "we can do it!" "Well done, you stuck it in a cm that time!" "Shall we get a hot chocolate after we've done these?" And other positive reinforcement.
