How many of you will comply?

LifesTooShortYOLO · 21/10/2021 10:34

I am interested to know if people will comply or not if they bring in Restrictions again about not mixing households, not seeing family or lockdowns etc again.
So many people I've spoken to are pretty much all of the same mindset of 'Fu#k that I'm not not seeing my family again, enough is enough and we have to get on with our lives now'
I also read this a lot on comments of articles where people are saying no they won't do it again and not see their loved ones or be told what to do over Christmas etc.

What are everyone's overall feelings as things stand right now?

The statement about Covid not impacting on the majority is naive and reductive.
Schools are already struggling to find cover for teachers who have Covid
Kids who are off with Covid are falling behind
Universities are still about 50-50 online/f2f
The high street is in its death throes
Shops, cafés and hospitality in general are on their knees because they've got 18 months of money to make up
Furlough abuse by both employers and employees means there's no money on the money tree
WFH abuse means employers want people back in the office. People not abusing the system who work more productively at home feel, quite rightly, this is unfair.
Non urgent treatments put on hold. Some turn out to have been a bit urgent after all.
Some businesses are bleeding people dry (see crony tenders etc)

Everyone is impacted by Covid. Everyone.

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/10/2021 10:42

That's why scientists recommend certain types of mask

But then using flimsy hand made useless masks -that are design(ish) and unique would not be a thing. Here, more than in Europe I see that if one wears a mask it almost has to be some "special" one. Most in europe are okay with the bog standard white/black ffp2 masks.
And then the opportunity to flaunt british exceptionalism would be massively hindered. fuck public health, at least be stylish ....

KrispyKale · 23/10/2021 11:00

Where can a decent surgical mask be accessed on the high street. I've looked in my supermarket and they are expensive tat ( that I'm wearing but feeling they are useless. ) Do Boots do medical masks right now? I've not been in-store for ages.

Barney60 · 23/10/2021 11:13

I can’t get worked up about the measures such as mask wearing, social distancing and working from home. I still wear a mask when I’m in a crowded place, for others’ benefit more than my own as I know a few elderly people that are still very cautious. The people that flat out refuse to wear a mask because they ‘won’t be told what to do’ are just selfish IMO.
Exactly this! People that say to me daily "Oh im ok ive been double jabbed and had my booster" really pees me off! its not about just you!

Everyone is affected by Covid restrictions/ the policy choices we have made in response to the virus.
SapereAude · 23/10/2021 11:17

Obviously
But the people on here who can't get that if numbers get so high, lockdowns and restrictions become necessary leading to further disruption leading to....is worrying.

NautaOcts · 23/10/2021 11:17

No
All my close relatives have had it
I’m about to have booster
My family were exposed but didn’t get it but if we did then so be it.
I think of how careful my dad was the whole time (immune compromised), how many gatherings and family occasions he missed, and he got it anyway! (And is fine)

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/10/2021 11:23

Everyone is affected by Covid restrictions/ the policy choices we have made in response to the virus.

But if everyone makes small changes the impact could be big enough to not make massive changes necessary.

If you see that the cars in front of you are slowing down you start using the motor's "inbuilt" breaking capacity. Unless you're a twit and slam on the breaks 2 centimeters from the one in front of you. Which is more risky behaviour?

on a tangent....
Another thing I find really baffling in the UK.. In Europe there are a few common courtesy things drivers do.

 1. on the highway if the line stops you automatically put on emergency blinkers to show the one behind you that you are stopping, not slowing down. Did this here and the fuckwit behind me got out of his car and started yelling that I gave him a heart attack as the emergency lights should only be used in an emergency, eg. if I crash....
 2. if you see a police car with a speed radar, further down the road you signal to the ones coming. Save them penalty and points. Here, this is not a "thing". At least not in London where I do 99% of my driving.
Do hope that I've just crossed paths with stupid ones and the majority uses these small things...

And the amount of people who cannot grasp the concept of their actions having an affect on others..... As if every person was their own island or something.... "I had my jabs", "I've had covid", etc....
BluebellsGreenbells · 23/10/2021 11:29

And the amount of people who cannot grasp the concept of their actions having an affect on others

I work in a school, there are no mandatory mask wearing, no social distancing and full assemblies.

We have no choice, but the window is open!

My children attend 3 different schools, each has 1000+ students - no masks no social distancing - they have to attend.

Please explain how MY actions affect others?

Rosehip10 · 23/10/2021 11:32

@TheSunIsStillShining I find people who condone unsafe road behaviour (speeding) if they think they can get away with it are selfish.
@TheSunIsStillShining I find people who condone unsafe road behaviour (speeding) if they think they can get away with it are selfish.
sorry, but how does this relate to what I said?
I live in an area where literally the birds are the biggest roadside population, yet we have a new 20mph limit on deserted roads. Going 24 will get you a fine and points. Please tell me how 24mph is reckless and selfish.
Road regulations have to be logical and take into consideration the environment they are in. Having 20mph limit in a Soho street, crowded with ppl is logical. Having 20 as a limit, just based on it is zone 1-2-3-x is stupid. Traffic engineering is a massive job. Not a blanket, one size fits all exercise that we are seeing happening now.

don't want to derail, so let's drop it. It was just an example.

theDudesmummy · 23/10/2021 11:39

I did answer the question about social distancing. 2m apart wherever possible, otherwise FFP2 or 3.

I don't buy masks in the supermarket etc, I order the proper ones online. Including child ones for my DS, so they fit properly.

I won’t however comply with any measures introduced not to see family. I think you should be able to make your own assessment on risk when choosing people to spend prolonged amounts of time with. I had a cold a few weeks back and stayed away from people. One of my relatives is recovering from a big operation and has a compromised immune system ATM so she’s not had visitors indoors. Others should be able to use the same kind of common sense.

My sentiments exactly... wearing a mask is no real hardship. I can get on with my day albeit with steamy glasses. Not see my elderly mum again for months on end no way but will ensure to limit interactions before visiting her and taking LFTs...

It seems to be moving back to an all or nothing option again, really don't understand why sensible precautions aren't put in place.

theDudesmummy · 23/10/2021 11:41

Here everyone still stands on the yellow spot in the supermarket queue, goes through the shop one-way system etc. It really doesn't take much to just be careful.

Yes true.
Completely irrelevant however.

Would you be penalized if you wore a mask? Or if you asked your pupils to do the same? I'm guessing no. Yet, it's not happening mostly. The idea of people self regulating is a foreign concept in the 21st century on so many levels.

In school setting I don't put any blame on specific teachers or kids. But I am outraged that even though most secondaries have biology and physics teachers heads still don't dare think with their own heads and just tow the company line of idiocracy.

The only point where I "blame"* general school population is not standing up collectively to heads and demand the basic measures.

*blame is a strong word, and don't misunderstand me: I think most teachers in general are fantastic, wish I could become a teacher as I think it is one of the best professions. So no teacher bashing from me.

superblondie28 · 23/10/2021 11:43

Masks I will comply with. Still wear a mask on the bus to work, with added bonus of keeping face warm. My sinuses play up terrible every winter but less so last winter 🤗

I never worked from home as I cannot. Nobody in the workplace can do.

DH and I are both double vaccinated. He tested positive on the 2nd day of our camping holiday via LFT. Suffered with aches, tiredness, slightly warmer body temp and that's it. We never went home early as he's the only driver and it was just 2 of us. I never caught it off him. He was fine 2 days later... I suffered more with my recent cold 🤧

superblondie28 · 23/10/2021 11:47

Seeing family - surely depends if they want to see us. My parents live 100 miles away.
Friends - the same really. I don't tend to chat to people I don't know even before Covid.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2021 11:49

PinkSparklyPussyCat

I understand what you're saying but who is going to pay for the masks? I looked on the Boots website and they have 5 single use FFP2 masks (great for the environment!) for £9.99. I'm certainly not paying that and there's a lot of people that won't be able to afford them“

I was told by a pharmacist that all masks are re-usable. She said isolate them for 3 days and re-use in rotation. No idea if that’s accurate.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/10/2021 11:53

That would make sense @MrsSkylerWhite. Boots said single use but of course it's not in their interests for us to reuse them!

Biker47 · 23/10/2021 11:59

No, they can fuck off, don't wear masks anymore, and I will not be altering my plans for December.

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/10/2021 12:11

I buy ffp2 of 3 masks (whichever is available) on amazon. 20 in a pack for £15. Enough for a month's school.

Plus have another box for weekends, family. It comes out around 20-25 quid a month extra.
I do agree that this should be subsidized though.
We're lucky we can easily afford it, but sure that for many even this is a high cost. Or if you have more children, or everyone has to go to work daily....

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 23/10/2021 12:22

@TheSunIsStillShining

I do wonder if there is an alternative reality where the stats and rules of physics don't count? UK has seemed to slip into it. The vast majority of the world are doing certain things to make sure that the least amount of ppl get infected and/or die. BAsed on a very wide consensus of 1000s of scientists and public health experts. And yet some ppl here are actually happy that UK does the exact opposite. Because we must be right and everyone else is a moron.

Mask debate is the stupidest one ever. I really wish people would start protesting so vehemently against footwear. I hate shoes. I hate seeing shoes on other people. It makes social interactions so much worse when someone has an ugly as fuck loafer on. It has even slowed down the mental development of my child when around age 1 had to make him wear one. I felt like a total fascist, but society made me do it.

We could do the same for scarves. OR hats. Or underwear. Or clothes in general. seatbelts, hazmat suits in hazardous conditions, plasters on wounds, glasses,.....

Makes little sense And that’s being generous
Reallyimeanreally2022 · 23/10/2021 12:26

@theDudesmummy

Yes, I know (sigh). But not many in my area. I suspect things are different in the cities, less compliance etc.
You originally said that you couldn’t understand how this country was not doing social masks etc in the way your country was

But now it would seem just your area
