Has anyone else had a young child be quite poorly with covid?

DD age 7 tested positive last Friday. She’s been really quite poorly ever since - awful headache, ongoing fever, feeling incredibly weak, like a very bad cold I’d say. I’ve never seen her like this before (the worst viruses she’s had in the past would’ve only wiped her out for 2 days max. I don’t think she’s ever missed a day of school ill).
All the other kids I know who’ve had it have breezed through and just wondered if anyone else has had quite a poorly little one?
Also feeling very nervous about it hitting me and DH and not being able to look after the kids properly.

My 6 year old was like this for 3 days and then it just was like a very bad cold with a horrible cough. She kicked it in two weeks but is still getting a bit tired and is having difficulty with her breathing when swimming/getting tired after long walks that previously wouldn’t have phased her.

Surprisingly me and DH didn’t get it despite being in close contact with her, and I’m 37 weeks pregnant (we are both double vaccinated).

I started a thread a few days back regarding my 11yr old daughter. We are almost four weeks in and she is on prescription sip drinks. Been to hospital for bloods and fluids several times and can't walk. She is awake for 10-15 mins at a time then sleeps. She hasn't eaten in over three weeks and she can't stand let alone walk. My younger son has sore eyes and was fine within two days. I don't want to scare you but post viral fatigue is what my daughter has and there is nothing we can do.

I’m so worried about post viral fatigue and long covid. DD’s life normally is sport, it’s a huge part of who she is.

DS (6m) tested positive and was quite poorly, especially as I didn't know anyone with a baby who had tested positive and DD(3yr) also quite poorly. They had both well and truly bounced back after a week but I was on the phone to 111 a few times. They were lovely. But very scary when it'd all happening so sending my sympathy

DD2 has been vomiting with it. Feeling pretty lousy.

Thanks Starlive23, that’s the kind of good news story I need right now. It must’ve been really scary having a poorly baby.

DD and DS were 13 and 9 respectively. DD was very under the weather with a severe and debilitating headache and also ended up being sick with a nasty upset stomach. She slept and slept and slept. She has long Covid still, a year later.

DS was very ill. He couldn't stay awake for more than 15 minutes, had a raging fever which we struggled to control, a terrible headache and then started vomiting. He couldn't breathe well and then developed tonsillitis. He was pretty ill for 10 days and then suddenly bounced back.

Yes, sadly. My DD had it last year, she was poorly with symptoms for 5 weeks and then exhausted for another 6 or 7. Around 4 months before she got back to what I'd say was normalish. 111 were really helpful and explained to me that it's not unusual, it's just not the norm. I was really surprised as DD is healthy as an ox, normally bounces back from stuff really quickly. She's got no health conditions or anything that would have led me to believe she's get so poorly.

So much for kids rarely get symptoms / have a mild illness.. with Covid ripping through schools I'm afraid more and more children may have a pretty rough ride.

DD’s friend, aged 8, had the Alpha variant and a temperature of 40. My job involves some Covid management and there’s very little data on how children experience Delta - this thread should be interesting…

Your post caught my eye & I might have an answer that could help, as I recognise symptoms you describe as how my daughter was pre starting treatment for PA... I feel for you, it's awful

Myself & DD have pernicious anaemia, we can't process vitamin B12 & need injections. When I had Covid, I felt PA symptoms flood back, many other PA suffers have seen the same & long Covid people have benefited from B12 injections. I also felt zinc deficiency symptoms with no taste & smell & the supplement helped.

This explains it, but in short ask your doctor for a "therapeutic trial of vitamin B12 injections" it doesn't always show in blood tests, so NICE advocates a trial of injections to see if it helps, if symptomatic

Should have added, my friend had long Covid & B12 injections & high dose quality vitamins to go with it, turned it around really quickly

Ds 9 said he had never felt so poorly and was barely eating or out of bed for four days. By day five was just floppy but pretty much ok
Never lost taste or smell and no cough or temp strangely

I’m so sorry to hear about all these unwell children. Especially those still suffering months on. It’s incredibly unfair.
The advice for siblings of positive cases to be in school just seems insane.

Surely your daughter should be in the hospital with that level of illness? are you doing fluid charts to monitor her intake? by 3 weeks an individual who has a survivable illness is normally on NG feeds if they aren't eating.

So sorry too to hear about all the kids who have been so poorly with this. It’s such a weird virus, making some kids ill while others don’t even notice it!

Ds was 10, caught covid in the first wave in March 2020 and it was the worst I’ve ever seen him. (He was one of those kids that never notices when they’re ill and leaps around with a fever!) His started with a sore throat, then nearly nonstop cough, a bit of vomiting, high temp of 40. He unfortunately then developed mis-c and still has problems with his heart (and tonsils, weirdly!) caused by the original infection. I think his is a pretty extreme case though!

Having said that I really do worry that the “herd immunity” style of letting it rip through schools is going to be really damaging. So far, hospitalisations, illness and long covid have been relatively rare, but as infections increase those numbers will bump up too. Kids deserve better than this.

We have been to the hospital several times. She has had bloods and urine tests. They have all said this is post viral fatigue. She is on prescription sip drinks which I'm getting down her. It's just a matter of letting her rest. Honestly the amount of times she has now been seen or I have spoken to someone. They have all said she needs to rest. It's a week tomorrow she has been on the drinks and I'm due to speak with the gp about getting more.

I do hope your little one is better soon.
Seems to affect everyone differently.
Also I wonder if they lost some immunity other things when we went into lockdown.
I do find the doctors will see young kids face to face they also run hit clinics.
