How long to get smell back?

Merryway85 · 18/10/2021 11:09

For anyone who lost their smell as a result of covid, could you let me know how long it took for it to return please? Smell is very important to me, as it is everyone of course, but I am really really missing my aromatherapy. Thank you

I'd like to know, too.

Mine took about 3 weeks.

I was overjoyed when it did!

Persephonespip · 24/10/2021 15:44

It has been about 10 weeks for me and it’s still not back. I hadn’t realised how important it was to my feeling of well-being Sad

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/10/2021 15:52

If I'm really close, I can very faintly smell things now. Hoping it's the start of it coming back.

Sorry to hear that, it really is upsetting. Have you tried smell training where you smell a few familiar scents a couple of times a day and try to remember the smell? When I do this I sometimes think it’s coming back then smell something unfamiliar and not a whiff. Hopefully you see some improvement soon!

It's bizarre isn't it, I can cope with no taste but not being able to smell anything is bothering me!

Letsplough · 24/10/2021 15:57

I hate it, my smell & taste have gone over the last 3 days, it's the worst symptom I have. Most people I have asked say it took about a month to return Sad

imasurvivor2 · 24/10/2021 16:14

Still haven't got it back after 10 months Sadhopefully I'm in the minority though!

Merryway85 · 24/10/2021 16:23

You don’t really realise how much you rely on your smell until you lose it. Simply things like smelling food that’s maybe been in the fridge a bit too long to smelling smoke if there was a fire it’s really horrible.

I'm definitely wearing too much perfume these days.

Tinysnickers · 24/10/2021 17:05

I lost mine on day 8. Its now been 10 days since it went. It didn't go completely, I could still smell something strong right underneath my nose but the smoke alarm has gone off a lot this week because I couldn't smell the toast burning.
It is coming back though, I can smell my cup of tea right now. My taste is mostly back but still different. Bland things eg oven chips, breakfast cereal, white bread taste of not much. Strong flavours are better but much to my annoyance coffee tastes fairly unpleasant Sad

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/10/2021 19:33

Took about a month for it to return properly, it was gradual.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 25/10/2021 00:40

Not Covid, but I lost my sense of smell after a heavy cold years ago, and it came back after about a month.

I imagine the mechanics of it/how long it typically takes to recover may be similar, regardless of which specific virus does it to you.

I remember feeling so blue about it, it’s really hard! I missed being able to smell intimate things like the children’s hair when they were all clean after a bath, or my own bed/my pillow when I was going to sleep. (Not that my bed smells strongly of anything! But just the familiar smell of your own space)

kittenkipping · 25/10/2021 00:42

I can smell and taste📀l. But not like before . It's been 16 months. As a chef, my taste is altered beyond recognition. I'm sad

YungDumbThrills · 25/10/2021 00:50

I was 4 months no smell/taste which then turned into Parosmia. I'm now 6 months with parosmia and 10 months post covid.

Merryway85 · 03/12/2021 10:53

Update on this to say that 2 months post covid I still don’t really have any sense of smell. If I sniff right at things I can sometimes get faint whiffs but it seems to vary day by day. Really getting me down now, I know in the scale of things it’s minor, but it’s definitely affecting my sense of well-being.

I had covid at the beginning of July, and still don't have taste and smell back. I know what I should be able to taste and smell but it's just not there. I really miss it!

QueefofSheena · 03/12/2021 10:57

I’m about 5 weeks post-Covid. Taste and smell are gradually returning but not back to normal. I had phantom smells too, bonfires mainly when the smell is actually coffee.

uglyflowers · 03/12/2021 12:14

About 8-9 weeks for me.

LadyCluck · 03/12/2021 12:19

5 months.
