I’m two months in and smell and taste aren’t back. I really miss them. Feels like they will never return

Smell came back fairly soon although I was ultra sensitive to smells for a while. Taste took around 6 months to get back to normal.
Had Covid in Jan, six weeks off work but am fine now.
All the best with your recovery 🌺

My smell came back slightly after 3 weeks and now 3 months on it isn’t any better! To smell something I have to put my nose right up to it. I have a 2 year old and a 6 month old and I’ve often had someone say ‘eww one of thems done a poo’ and I wouldn’t smell a thing until I open up the nappy.

Pippioddstocking · 17/10/2021 08:23

I’m watching this with interest. Only day 23 today and only the odd millisecond of taste or smell returned so far. I’m gutted that yesterday’s millisecond was as I walked past the dog poo bin in the park 😒

My taste/smell came back within a couple of weeks but 4 months later my taste and smell have completely changed. Apparently it’s a common side effect which is affecting lots of people after losing their sense of smell and taste. The links between the nose and brain were damaged by Covid and grow back to the “wrong” place. So chocolate, coffee, meat all taste and smell like a horrible chemical. It’s awful and for someone who loves chocolate it’s so disappointing as I can’t enjoy a bar of chocolate anymore. The smell is there constantly and turns my stomach. The condition is called parosoma. There is very little known about it and if/when it will go back to normal but seems it is very common months after Covid and losing your smell and taste.

NimbusLight · 17/10/2021 08:28

About two/three months, came back gradually

DustyOwl · 17/10/2021 08:32

No! Not for Christmas! My sense of taste only disappeared yesterday. I love to cook, how am I going to tell what things taste like, I'm going to be serving up some very strange dishes.

Ilikeviognier · 17/10/2021 09:19

Oh dear. I’m only on day 10 and I hate that everything tastes like cardboard and my sense of smell is muffled. I could really do with it back for Christmas! You forget how much you miss it!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/10/2021 09:22

Mine returned after a month but I'd say it's a bit more dulled than it used to be.

Nathalie1975 · 17/10/2021 09:25

Within a couple of weeks and back to how they were before.

whatnumber · 17/10/2021 10:31

@User9911 nooooo not chocolate.
I've just lost my smell. Im too tired to even know if my taste has gone too.

Oohhaveabanana · 17/10/2021 10:45

Lost my taste and smell 18 months ago and still not back to normal. I either can't smell at all or I can smell some things, but the smell is wrong - so I can smell coffee but it smells of smoke, onions smell rancid etc. Taste is much better, but again there are certain things that taste wrong/horrible. Not sure if it'll get better after all this time now. It's not nice ☹️

Pippioddstocking · 17/10/2021 22:10

These tales are so depressing 😢

userxx · 17/10/2021 22:14

It's such a strange sensation, knowing food should taste a certain way yet it tastes of nothing at all. How can a virus do that?!

AlexaShutUp · 17/10/2021 22:15

I am on day 12 and can't smell anything. Taste seems more erratic - it comes and goes, sometimes it seems normal, sometimes I can't taste much at all and sometimes things just taste weird.Confused

Oneforthemoneytwo · 17/10/2021 22:17

I had absolutely no smell at all for about 2 weeks but it seems to have come back quite quickly. Was very weird

RoseAddict · 17/10/2021 22:27

2 months the first time and then it came back very very slowly and with a lot of things not smelling like they used to. They second time I had covid it was much quicker- within a week and with less weirdness

RolloTomassi · 17/10/2021 22:36

I'm about 3 weeks post-covid. Taste came back after a week or so. Was extremely relieved!!! It's about the same as it was before.

Smell is still MIA. I can faintly identify a strong scent up close (like actively sniffing a reed diffuser) but no general wafts in the air whatsoever. Really miss it and hope it returns soon. DH the same as me on both counts.
