New LFT v old LFT accuracy

My childs school has just got a new batch of LFT tests. They have a rounded edge and are oy up those nose. Some children are testing positive on these but negative on the old lft kits.
Do they go out of date?

This has happened to me today, it’s frustrating

Vinorosso74 · 16/10/2021 15:56

We also had this. DD had a faint positive on one of the new ones this week followed by a negative. PCR was negative. I got some of the older versions from a pharmacy where she tested negative too (this was whilst awaiting PCR result).

Littlemiss74 · 16/10/2021 15:59

@Vinorosso74 ah so there is hope that mine may be wrong then!

holidaynearlyover · 16/10/2021 16:16

I think the new LFT are meant to be better. The old only have a 40% accuracy

Whinge · 16/10/2021 16:22

We've had a few staff test positive on the new LFT, but negative on the nose and throat ones. It's ancedotal, but in every case the staff member has then gone on to test positve via a PCR test.

Elephantsparade · 16/10/2021 16:42

Thats interesting so maybe the new ones are picking up more then.

The positive is real. The new ones have a different tip, I reckon it collects more viral material. Makes it easier to get enough od the virus for a positive.
A false positive on a LFD is very very unlikely.

acoldwintersday · 16/10/2021 18:48

could anyone post a picture of the new tests please??

My daughter did a LFT today it was negative but she's now got a high temperature and tired etc.

I got them from the pharmacy. PCR on the way.

13lucky · 16/10/2021 22:37

My ds had a very strong positive line on the old style LFD. He then took a new style 'up the nose only' one...no line whatsoever. He took a further old style one which showed positive straight away again. PCR confirmed positive for Covid. So in our case, the old style ones picked up Covid, new style different until the following day

NeedSleepNow · 16/10/2021 22:48

I had a faint positive on the old style nose and throat ones but nothing on the newer ones, pcr confirmed I was positive

Miracle29 · 16/10/2021 22:52

My ds still gets the old ones for school but when I order them I get the new style nose only ones. My ds had 5 positives with the new ones negative with the old and negative pcr. Judging by the symtoms he had I was so sure it was covid but school insisted he was to go in based on the pcr result but every one I have taken has always been a pure negative

Whatafrickennightmare · 17/10/2021 09:10

Had 4 positive lFT with the new tests no symptoms, negative PCR and negative old style LFT. Track and trace have told me I don't have to isolate so not sure what's going on 🤨

Longdistance · 17/10/2021 09:19

This is the new type.

If you have 4 positive LFT you almost certainly have Covid. If it's possible i'd isolate and treat it as Covid despite what test and trace say.
gogginsmrs · 17/10/2021 15:09

We all had covid in Sep and the new ones showed positive much earlier than the old style ones (which I only did out of interest to see if the new ones were more sensitive) - I’m talking two days earlier

JanglyBeads · 17/10/2021 15:12

The Flowflex ones have been proved as slightly more sentsitive in trials, but not a huge difference iirc.

Littlemiss74 · 17/10/2021 15:27

I had a positive yesterday & negative today both the new type of test. Don’t know what to think!
Has anyone else had this?

Waiting for pcr now

JanglyBeads · 17/10/2021 19:21

It’s quite normal for infected people who do a series of lateral flow tests, even all of the same type, to get some positive and some negative.

Littlemiss74 · 17/10/2021 19:35

My pcr has just come back negative so the first test must have been a false positive😬

Whinge · 17/10/2021 19:43

I'd actually think it's more likely it was too early for the PCR test, and I would test again in a few days. Flase positives on the LFT are much rarer than False negatives on the PCRs.
Hotpinkangel19 · 18/10/2021 11:02

I tested positive on a old style LFT on Tuesday, then negative PCR on Tuesday night. PCR yesterday for symptoms and positive result. It can be too early for PCR

Littlemiss74 · 18/10/2021 11:23

@Hotpinkangel19 ok thanks that’s interesting. I actually don’t think I have any symptoms, a tiny bit of a cough but definitely not persistent. The reason I was testing was because I wanted to visit my Dad in his care home and we have to test. When it showed as positive I couldn’t go so its a bit frustrating when the pcr came back negative as maybe I could have gone after all🙁 All the confusion over the testing is making me lose confidence in it all really.

Hotpinkangel19 · 18/10/2021 11:39

@Littlemiss74 My son and daughter have tested positive the same day with absolutely no symptoms at all.

Bobholll · 18/10/2021 11:40

I tested positive on both. I did a new one & it was faint but obviously a line. Re-tested on an older style one (all I had left) & exact same result 🤷🏼‍♀️

CyclesPerfecta · 18/10/2021 12:29

Tested positive on the new one, strong positive line appeared almost immediately. Subsequent faint positive on the old one. PCR positive.
