Anyone had - LFT with + PCR?

I started to get cold symptoms at the weekend and on Monday lost my sense of smell. I had a negative lateral flow result on Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning but took the PCR Monday due to having the main symptoms. This came back positive on Tuesday so began isolation. I have taken a LFT everyday and they're still showing negative. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't find any research on it.

Yes DP, all negative right the way through isolation but positive PCR

One if my dcs. Positive lfrs started about 2 days after posrive pcr.
I think it was day 2. Since covid moved in here all the days are a blur.

Same for me and DH

onthinice · 14/10/2021 14:55

Yes. I took a LFT yesterday morning as my daughters was positive. Mine was neg but when I took DD for PCR an hour later I also took one just to be on the safe side.

Both of us came back positive last night. I did another LFT yesterday around 3pm as I felt so ill and it was still neg.

Pleased to hear I'm not the only one. DP and DD have both tested negative so wasn't sure if it was an incorrect positive. My symptoms say otherwise though. I'm on day 6 with negative LFT.

Same in our house only the pcr picking it up.

Yes, happened with both me and DS, we both tested positive on PCRs and I took 2 PCRs so they couldn't have been wrong.

Some research suggests the lateral flow picks up when you are activities shedding the virus. So you could stay negative on them but still have Covid, you just don’t have a high viral load.

Isn't it quite common and why your not supposed rely on a lft with symptoms

RonaCoaster · 14/10/2021 15:24

I’m a week in and still all negative lateral flows. Im hoping this means I am less infectious and won’t pass it on to my partner.

Twilightstarbright · 14/10/2021 15:25

DH had this. Quite common apparently.

PeeAche · 14/10/2021 16:05

My LFT were neggy even when my PCR was positive.

My friend that worked with the tests explained that LFT are more likely to be negative if you aren't shedding much virus. PCRs work differently. She was much better at explaining it than me!

My sister-in-law, my niece and eight of niece's friends from a singing group all had covid last month. One of the friends had a positive LFT; all the rest had negative LFTs but positive PCRs (fortunately mild symptoms).
