Vaccine after close contact

Covid is rife in DC schools.

They’re doing daily LFTs, all negative.

Vaccinators are in today; guidance is not to have vaccine within 28 days of illness (or symptoms) but does anyone know if this is because it’s dangerous, or (sensibly) to avoid spreading Covid at vaccination centres?

Thanks!

(Negative PCRs last week after 1st close contact, but we’d literally be taking them every day if in response to each close contact, so nothing since)

I wonder this too.

If this were a problem, it would have been brought up before. The people being vaccinated now are younger and fitter so the risk to them even if they did catch it a vaccination centre is small.

There’s no need to worry about this.

I believe it is to do with effectiveness rather than safety. You need the body's own immune response to dampen down first. It's also why the vaccine is most effective with a decent gap in between doses. That's my understanding.

Ok, thanks - that makes sense re effectiveness rather than safety.

If feels like a “newer” issue (although I suppose it’s not really) in that when we were being vaccinated, the isolation rules for close contact were still in force.

Definitely not looking for reasons not to have them done, just wondering what the science was behind the guidance.

Sorry I think I’ve answered my own question about whether you can be vaccinated after a close contact.

The green book which is the key document about all things vaccines covers this:

That’s brilliant, thank you PurpleDaisies!

(Slightly Blush I didn’t find that myself when I looked)

No worries-apologies for the false start!
