Is it just me or is this board getting a bit quieter?

That’s a good sign, right? :)

@ilovesooty

Perhaps people are tired of having the same circular arguments.
This. UsforThem type posters vs those wanting some mitigations. Often just boils down to level of avoidable death and illness people are comfortable with and also whether people want vaccinations or believe in natural immunity instead. As we have taken such an extreme stance in this country, given where our case rates are, a centrist approach is now seen as extreme, which is ironic. I think where both 'sides' do agree is that JCVI should be more transparent, so there is some common ground somewhere!

I've seen the mention on the reddit covid sub that MN is rife with anti- vaxxers. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Those with a different opinion are driven out in a barrage of abuse and insults.

Covid board insults: thick, uneducated, anti-vax, covid denier, conspiracy theorist, can’t possibly be permitted to participate in society.

Driven out? The board has become quiet because the covid minimisers are now the majority. If anyone else dares ask a question - the sneers and mocking is shocking. That's why the traffic is low. Not because "a certain poster" left @TheKeatingFive - although that may mean a lot less less mocking to do, I suppose. [/quote]
I find the Covid minimising a bit alarming. I've been what I think would be best described as cautious but I'm also back commuting to and working in London (though only half the week), going to live events and seeing friends and family indoors etc. Still wearing a mask where recommended/required. I'm really, really glad things are calmer and we can have some normality, but our figures are so poor that I worry we're running unnecessary risks that are going to cause difficulties over the winter. God knows none of us want another lockdown but I also don't want elderly relatives waiting for ambulances for hours and hours, losing more hours of work/school because of illness that would have been preventable etc etc. So if we had to reintroduce masks or social distancing or other measures, I think it will be much more difficult now because the minimising message is pervasive and aggressive.

Or maybe we'll be fine, even though we're an outlier in Western Europe. It just seems like there's a lot of EVERYTHING'S FINE LA LA LA when it's not quite fine, it's much better than it was but we're not doing a brilliant job and the standard of discussion about it is really toxic.

userperuser · 12/10/2021 11:17

The Redit sub also claims that every MN poster is a racist homophobic and most threads are bull started by trolls.

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2021 11:19

UsForThem type posters vs those wanting some mitigations

I don’t agree with that phrase because you could easily say get back to life v lockdown types

Megistotherium · 12/10/2021 11:24

userperuser, I don't mean the particular place that talk about MN. It was mentioned on regular covid sub, not related to MN at all.

userperuser · 12/10/2021 11:30

Megistotherium

Reddit also have many subs including one for discussion of topics considered by many as conspiracy theory and way crazier than anything seen on these boards.

Some Reddit posters are also MN posters.

Agreed

userperuser · 12/10/2021 11:35

MN need to conclude these boards as it’s pick a side.

There’s no rational discussion to be had.

Haven't seen anyone advocating for lockdown for ages. Both sides seem to want to get back to life.
TheGrumpyGoat · 12/10/2021 11:47

Haven't seen anyone advocating for lockdown for ages

Fairly sure I saw a poster mentioned upthread recently saying we should lockdown now before winter comes.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 12/10/2021 11:51

I haven't seen that. So, with the odd exception, both sides seem to want to get back to life.

TheGrumpyGoat · 12/10/2021 11:53

But why are there ‘sides’? It implies that there are only 2 possible positions to take. That’s why I stopped bothering to engage much on the Covid board, because of the assumption that you’re on one ‘side’ or another. It’s boring.

QueenofKattegat · 12/10/2021 11:59

Total and utter rubbish. What is a covid minimiser by the way?

Delatron · 12/10/2021 12:11

What’s a Covid minimiser?

Or is it someone who has accepted Covid is here to stay and after two years wants to get on with their lives. Following a successful vaccination program....

beentoldcomputersaysno · 12/10/2021 12:21

@TheGrumpyGoat - these boards have become 'sides'. Between doing nothing and advocating for a couple of measures, there's not much else going on, unless someone has a specific question or piece of advice or article. I think it's hard for some to understand someone's belief that schools should be safer. It's hard for some to understand another's belief against that that mass natural infection is good (just examples). Most people know whether their teens will get vaccinated or not - some are in a desperate race against the clock, a few are undecided, some don't want to vaccinate.

Quartz2208 · 12/10/2021 12:29

Not sure how much there is too say that hasnt been said.

We could go round and round on a mask discussion and get no further until/unless the Government bring them back there isnt much else to say

The data thread is amazing for discussing the data and is well used so that area is covered.

Most who have been vaccinated have been - the 12-15 rollout is a mess but again what else is there to say

Other issues are far more than Coronavirus based as well.

It is what it is and is here to stay

MrsLCSofLichfield · 12/10/2021 12:36

Back in March 2020 the coronavirus support threads on here were very useful to me and others. Lots of posters were sick and didn't know anyone else who was ill outside of their own households. We weren't all panicking we were going to die, but it's an unpleasant illness, it's not a fucking cold Hmm Being able to compare trajectories and share things that helped us get better was really useful.

This board is now basically useless and has been since summer 2020. If I want sensible discussion and information from posters who don't think you can make a pandemic go away by just ignoring it, plus moderators who don't tolerate any anti-vax shit, I go to Reddit.

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2021 12:46

No one says it’s gone away. But the situation is changing, most people can see that.

But yes people are not talking about it as much in here nor is it commanding as much media attention.

Some people will feel relieved others want to keep going - on Reddit or wherever

Dishhh · 12/10/2021 12:48

@Delatron

People that say to someone who has Covid: "And?" or "So what?" Both examples i saw from regular posters here. Posters who jump on another who is uncertain about returning to the workplace/riding on public transport/having a meal out - "People die all the time."

There is so little point posting anything here - it gets picked at like crows.

I could go on ... but it is my bedtime.

changingstages · 12/10/2021 13:12

oh SORRY @TheGrumpyGoat I thought you meant on this thread... I thought I was going mad trying to figure out who had said that!

Someone who says it's been going on for 2 years for a start
vera99 · 12/10/2021 13:23

This was a good thread to finally say goodbye. Same with Dr John as well all has been said that needs to be said at a macro level.

TheKeatingFive · 12/10/2021 13:30

Not sure how much there is too say that hasnt been said.

I agree with this actually.

The situation isn't changing rapidly any more. It is what it is. We could have it out about masks or whatever for the umpteenth time, but we've said it all before.

There was more interesting discussion on the thread about Aus/NZ on here, which is reflective of a different stage in the trajectory.
